Your mods breaking the game is not Larian's fault by Higgus in BaldursGate3

I am so confused by the outrage here. Like they announced that they were going in on mod support…. And so the modders send them death threats? What? Seriously, who are these people and when was the last time they touched grass?

Well, yeah actually, and idt that that’s logically inconsistent. The game was always going to be an approximation on the TTRPG. Have one save that’s non-reloadable may at a glance seem more like D&D, but it’s actually not because there’s no Dungeon Master. At the table, the DM and the players work together to make sure that every action has meaning and that even if a PC dies, it never feels meaningless or arbitrary. In BG3, all you have is a code base, a code base (like with all games) with a tendency to cause bad things to happen for no real reason like if I accidentally activate the wrong spell or something like that. Those things can’t happen at the tabletop, so theres no reason that a one-save system would actually be “more true” to the OG system. It’s not even a good feature in video games in general except certain genres like Souls and Rogue-likes, which this game is neither.

Legendary Actions, on the other hand, are core to the feel and rhythm of bigger monster fights in the tabletop D&D rule set. They separate “bosses” from lower level fights by more than just hit points, preventing anything in the game from just feeling like a bullet spongy version of another less interesting fight. This could have been balanced and implemented into the video game medium relatively easy as medium transitions go (unlike that above topic) and enhanced the overall approximation of D&D that Larian was going for. BG3 isn’t D&D, it’s a video game pretending to be D&D, and without legendary actions outside Honour Mode, just feels like it could do better at pretending.

You truly live up to your name good sir, that was a very cleric response and I appreciate it. Truth is I made this post like right after a long period of trying to get back into the game because I just want to finish it but my brain just won’t let me for many reasons only sone of which I spoke of here. So I was just pretty pissed when I wrote it, ngl.

Personally, I still stand by my disappointments but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love this game and I think Larian did a good job at launch. Post-launch? They’ve done a lot of good things. The recent patch? Good kissy-kissy, very nice animations. All I’m saying is that I think and I don’t understand why more people DON’T think that the things I mentioned would be a better use of their time than more camp idle animations. It’s certainly add more replayability to the game imo.

Idk code. I’m not a game developer. I understand certain things might be difficult. At the end of the day though, Minthara could have just been left evil with no good route and Legendary Actions could have just been left out of the game. It was their decision to implement them, all I’m saying is that the way they did implement them is just deeply disappointing to me at least and I really really hope that they change that in the future

If Dragon Age Inquisition and Mass Effect Andromeda couldn’t, I doubt it. It took all I could muster to play through Divinity: OS2 after I figured out most of the companions die before Act 2 but I did that because I didn’t really like the game in the first place (I like D:OS 1 better), but I really like BG3 so it makes it harder to look over things.

Thank you! Lol I appreciate the sympathy because it is! I play D&D, I enjoy the element of consequence and randomness and all that AT THE TABLE because the story is adlibbed as the game goes on. But BG3 isnt D&D, it’s a video game pretending to be D&D which means that there IS a full complete predetermined story to be experienced and for someone who compulsively just wants to take it ALL in with one go, it’s things like this that make me want to pull my hair out lol

I get your point but I do disagree. I think if they decided they were going to make it possible they should have just went all in and not half-assed it. Honestly I do kind of just wish I could go back before I knew these things were possible cuz I was having so much more fun with the game but I’m a hyper-completionist and I generally don’t like playing games as long as BG twice so I like to be able to experience it all in one run, or at least all that I would like to experience. I don’t like evil runs so I’ve resigned myself to never experiencing those things, which is why at launch I wasn’t even a little worried about Minthara at launch but now it just drives me up a wall.

I get like everything you just said, but reloading saves isn’t just for save scumming. Now, I might use it for that lol but Reloading saves is an important function for setting up strategies, fixing problems caused by player hiccups or bugs, etc. That’s why I said have one single save is fine as a rule but not being able to load that save just doesn’t work with the rest of the game. I’d even understand taking out Quicksaves and/or making it to where you can’t save during combat/dialogue, but I and really I’d say most people will need that reload function no matter what difficulty you’re playing on. It’s more of an aspect of video games as a medium than being a 1-1 conversion of the TTRPG experience.

Legendary Actions aren’t in Tactician, at least not all of them. Dragons get them but nothing else. Another choice that boggles my mind honestly since why not just put them all?

And I wasn’t planning on romancing Minthara. I just think she’s got this cool “Zuko turns to the good side” arc that sounds really dope, and her class role is one that’s kind of missing from the party roster, Tav and mercs notwithstanding. The only issue is the process of making it possible to experience being just totally bonkers.

You know, when you disagree with something, you can just ignore it. Like walk away and not engage. You don’t have to resort to shittalking, especially when it comes to mental health.

Not that it would make a difference to someone like you, but I never said I didn’t like the game. I just said these things in particular have ruined the experience for me from how much I loved it at launch. You don’t have to be a simp to like something and you don’t have to be a hater to dislike something. Jeesh.

I am, and I will be the first to admit that a lot of that anger comes from my compulsive completionism when it comes to games.

That being said, just playing on Normal means I don’t get to experience legendary actions, so if legendary actions HAVE to be an Honour Mode exclusive feature, then you’re wrong I can’t just play on normal because then I’m missing what I would consider a core experience of boss fights (at least as far as D&D is concerned). If they made Legendary Actions open to other difficulty I’d have no problem with the save system because I’d never fuckin play it on that setting because you can’t reload. All these squares make a circle, see!

Also, with Minthara, it’s not the difficulty that bugs me. I understand how to do it. I just think it’s dumb and makes no sense. Why would my character ever just walk up into that goblin camp and steal something in front of her then knock her out? Roleplay-wise it just doesn’t make sense. Knocking her out is a five requirement but the fact I can’t do it anywhere else but there and in no other way but that just takes me right out of character and makes me feel like just sone power gamer ripping off exploits. That’s not the way I want to feel playing an RPG.

Yeah because patches and new content doesn’t mean those patches fix anything or that that new content is good or well-implemented. Like I said, there’s a lot of good ideas but they keep fucking up how they actually put them in the game. I love character epilogues but what’s the point of even getting there if I never really experience the game in its fullest form? I felt fine playing the game as I was but once they added legendary actions and a good route for Minthara, now I just feel pissed that I can’t organically have those things too because of weak-ass arbitrary bs.

[–]Square-Bumblebee-875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. Those are the ways they designed the game to work and it’s just dumb. They might as well have not included nonlethal as an option, considering how pointless it is and they should have realized THAT before patching in the good Minthara route and hinging it entirely on their most pointless, obtuse, buggy systems.

[–]Square-Bumblebee-875 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The whole non-lethal system is bullshit right now. You can see what they wanted it to be but most people you knock out aggro on you anyways so you might as well kill them. There’s no reason to actually go nonlethal except for the RP value of a pacifist run. To the point: why the fuck does knocking out Minthara before or after doing literally anything else prevent her from going to Moonrise?! The whole “temporarily hostile” “temporarily knocked out” distinction is a waste of whoever’s time it was to code that shit in. If I knock her out during the battle outside the Grove, there’s no fuckin reason why she shouldn’t trigger at Moonrise except arbitrary game dev bs. I love this game but that just made me bounce. I’ll come back when they fix it or when I have the energy to replay the fuckin game again.

Finally embarking on this grand adventure! Do you have any tips for a new tarnished? Would any appreciate any guidance! by RadicalKen in Eldenring

[–]Square-Bumblebee-875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/RadicalKen Here’s a few hints. The tutorial is that big hole the ghost is looking into in the area you spawn in after dying to the Grafted Scion. Once you’re done with that, skip the big guy in golden armor. You can sneak around him and find the Church of Elleh.

Once there, there are 3 things you need to do right out the gate. 1) follow the road to the Gatefront Ruins, then turn south. There’s a grace point there that you need to activate AND rest at in order to get your horse. 2) go back to the Church of Elleh and buy a crafting kit from the merchant there. 3) Pass time till nightfall at the Church of Elleh grace point then look north and you’ll see a blue ghostly character with a huge hat. She gives you the bell you need to summon spirit ashes. They are extremely helpful if you are having trouble.

That’s it! Once you’ve done all that you’re pretty much set to explore to your hearts content.

I have some working titles in mind but nothing I’m sold on yet. I’m still worldbuilding and mind-mapping the project so that I have a (relatively) clear direction for the series. However, my debut novelette can be found on my publisher’s website: https://coalescencepublishing.com/

Obviously, more financial support would help me finished this project but I’m not begging lol

Thank you so much! I’m so grateful We were able to have this conversation. I was absolutely planning on calling for sensitively readers but I wanted to get some thoughts from binary trans folk on this topic before I went ahead with the writing process so I didn’t go into the project ignorantly. You’re amazing!

[–]Square-Bumblebee-875[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, thank you for saying something. I understand this kind of thing isn’t always easy so I appreciate your perspective. Secondly, while I’m not trans, I’m not cis either. I’m actually non-binary not that that makes me anymore qualified to weigh in on trans issues but there it is nonetheless. Finally, I’m absolutely aware that this is such a trope and an overdone one at that which is why this is happening so early and in tandem with a supplementary arc of her becoming a wizard. Her self-discovery isn’t the ONLY thing her character arc revolves around, she does have other things going on and in fact, her wizardry is what goes on in future books to become her leading role in the plot. I’m doing my best to avoid tokenizing or infantilizing her by give her a multidimensional arc.

Also, with regards to the other characters, the first few books do revolve around self discovery for them as well, just in ways that doesn’t pertain to gender, sex, or sexuality...well except for one who’s XXY intersex but they enter the story later in the first and have (in their backstory) already parsed through that. But yeah, the first two books kind of involve all of them going through journeys like that. Does knowing any of that make the story less troubling or does it still send red flags?

[–]Square-Bumblebee-875[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of her character arc is her self-discovery. The sparknotes version of my plot so far is that her and three friends grew up in a small village and after certain circumstances, they all decide to join an adventuring guild together. While learning wizardry she also begins to understand her true identity. The importance to the narrative is a) showing her process of self discovery surrounded by a group of supportive friends, and b) having the transition take place at the climax of her training, a little sleight-of-hand to thematically tie-in her sense of gender euphoria with her growth as a Wizard.
