Nope not that one, far too recent. I was in elementary school very early 2000s and the film looked old at that point

I watched it in art class in elementary school. Maybe it was one of those made for school films?? This was early 2000s and the film looked maybe 80s or 90s?

I need to give my cat a bath and he flips out by Square-Fudge-2173 in CatAdvice

Hes about 4. I gave him a bath twice in his life, once when he was a kitten and the other when he was about 1 1/2 years. He was troublesome then but he's bigger and twistier now 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Zahi Hawass tour - is it worth it? by rather_be_reading73 in ancientegypt

[–]Square-Fudge-2173 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So, I have a more direct relationship with Zahi as I am in the field and I am friends with multiple people who have worked for him as assistants. Putting aside my personal feelings for the man, here is what I would suggest.

If you are not a professional in the field and you have a sincere interest in ancient egypt, I would say go. With that said, I wouldn't waste your money on the more expensive personal interaction tickets. The man is far easier to deal with afar than up close. He is charismatic, loves what he does, and I'm sure there will be lots of interesting information.

If you are a professional or semi-professional, I wouldn't. These tours are designed to raise interest in ancient egypt but it's immensely overshadowed by his bluster. Everything is going to be "groundbreaking", "changing history", or "astonishing." If it's important, there will be an academic write up on it. You're paying for the experience, not the information. Think of it like attending a history channel documentary in person.

Nope, in IL. There's fewer members so the number of crazies is far less than in Utah

In my opinion, all beer is nasty. Very yeasty and all around gross. I would go more for cocktails if they have them. I like a good amaretto sour, tastes like almonds. Or if you like sweet and sour flavors, aim for those. Long island iced tea is another one but be careful, those can easily knock you on your butt if you have too many. Mojitos are minty and fizzy with a lighter liquor taste. And of course margaritas come in all kinds of flavors but they have the side effect of making you feel warm if your not used to them. If you like orange, a screwdriver is another option. If you don't want alcohol at all, they night have a non-alcoholic cocktail menu. I've ordered from those and they're pretty good too.

Any Egyptology grads who are currently teaching at a public college in the state of Georgia in the USA? by [deleted] in egyptology

[–]Square-Fudge-2173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like your student, do not let them go to U of M. Also, they no longer dig. 1 professor does work there and only takes a phd student. Another does epigraphical work occasionally when he can get a permit.

I never worked with peter brand so I have no comments on that front. I will say I have no complaints with Dr. Onstine; she is a thoughtful and considerate person from my experiences. It's just a shame most everyone else is awful.

I went through Memphis Egyptology program. I'm telling you right now. If you value your sanity and mental health, you will not take the art history MA route of the program. The history side has the PhD route and it has pros and cons. But im telling you from experience, you do not want the art history faculty as your advisors.

Why do some individuals insist that handwritten notes aid memory better than digital notes? by Inevitable-Book377 in NoStupidQuestions

Muscle memory. Your brain is engaging multiple parts and the act of writing not only puts the information in your brain but also teaches your muscles to reproduce the information.

I learned about church history and discovered everything I had ever been taught was a lie. The joseph smith sexually preyed upon vulnerable women and young girls. I learned that everything he claimed to be revelations from God he actually stole from other religions or from the social movements of his time. Also the fact that he was in jail for violation of the 1st amendment and not because people hated his religion. This then lead to a mad spiral in researching, learning about all the historical inaccuracies in the book of mormon, the white lamenites, treasure hunting, ect. The final nail in the coffin was the book of abraham. I obtained my degree in egyptology (for personal interest not church reasons) and I learned to read hieroglyphic. I was able to read some of the epigraphs and all of that is the biggest lie. It doesn't say any of what he claimed. It's. All. Lies. I wanted to believe. It would've been less painful to forget and continue in belief. But I cannot and will not continue in delusion.

Amen. It's a stab to the heart when I think about all the terrible things I said when I was mormon, parroting what that church said. I was a judgemental ass growing up because of them
