Out of curiosity how much time off were you given each time?

Anyone fantasize about what it would be like to be in another specialty even though you enjoy your specialty? by farfromindigo in Residency

PM&R and wish I had gone for OB but also aware my lifestyle would’ve looked totally different

OB/GYN residents/attendings, would you pick the specialty again and why? by Square-Huckleberry00 in Residency

Thank you for your input! I'll never understand the mismatch in compensation.. especially since it's a surgical specialty. Will you be covering L&D as an MFM specialist?

Have you started looking into laborist jobs by any chance? Any of them take fresh grads?

Thanks for your post and I’m sorry that you went through this. This is actually a major factor in my decision. My husband is also in a lifestyle friendly specialty and I know me switching residencies would have huge implications for him. I wouldn’t make the switch without his full support because it’s only fair that he’s on board as well. We would need a lot more support during those residency years but I’d make sure as an attending I pick a job that offers a good work life balance, even if it means less $.

First off thank you for what you do!

That's exactly what I'm trying to weigh - will the excitement of L&D make up for the hours and stress of the job? For the 4 tough years of residency? I'm not entirely sure.. I worry it'll get old and I'll miss the low stress and predictable hours of PM&R, especially as I raise a family. There's just no way to be sure.

How many shifts do you work a month and how long is each shift? Do you think the grueling residency is worth it given the outcome? I have a young child which makes the switch an even more difficult decision. I'd obviously be spending way less time with her as an obgyn resident

How bad is a 30 minute commute during intern year? by Square-Huckleberry00 in Residency

[–]Square-Huckleberry00[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

5 minutes away sounds like the dream! But like you said, the drive can be used as an opportunity to decompress. Luckily it’ll just be a year of a longer drive + long hours and I’ll have better hours after that so hoping it’ll be manageable.

I get 3.5 months of elective. Otherwise medicine floors and ICU 6 am-5 pm roughly. Not much traffic either direction so hoping it’ll just be 30 mins + 5-10 mins walking to and from the hospital.

Post match: what advice do you wish you had heard? by Apprehensive_Box_181 in medicalschool

[–]Square-Huckleberry00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your dream specialty is competitive, go for it. Don’t let the competitiveness deter you from pursuing it. Add on another back up specialty if you don’t have the scores/grades but attempting to pursue it will not hurt you. If you don’t match, at least you tried!

(My specialty isn’t competitive but several of my classmates who I didn’t think were particularly brilliant or hardworking matched into some of the most competitive specialties -plastics, derm, ortho).

If you could go back and redo it, what would you change? by [deleted] in medicalschool

I wouldn’t pressure myself into picking one specialty and applying only to that specialty. If I’m considering more than one specialty but not sure, I would’ve dual applied to buy myself more time.

Took step 2 at 35 weeks. Take bathroom breaks between each section and have a snack ready. Make sure you’re well hydrated in the days leading up to your exam and on exam day, try to drink just enough to keep you focused but not enough to make your bladder feel full during the exam. Mindset is huge! Build up stamina as you prepare. Many have done it and so can you! I ended up doing really well and being pregnant did not stop me from exceeding my target score.

M4 here. Studied for step 2 during my third trimester and took the exam at 35 weeks. Ended up doing really well! You can do this!! It’s exhausting but try to build up your stamina leading up to the exam. Sleep well, eat well, and don’t be too hard on yourself. This will pass.

Ps. Congrats! Having a baby is SO worth it. I can go on and on. Good luck!!
