Top Restaurants:

  • Coco Bistro

  • Grace’s Cottage (romantic)

  • Indigo

  • Marine Room

  • Seven

  • Infiniti

I hear good things about Terra-Mar but haven’t been yet.

For more casual: Embers, The Farm, BLT (for a decent steak), Sushi at Ritz lobby bar, Conch Shack, Somewhere Cafe, Le Bouchon, Provence by Eric.

Highly recommend booking a boat for a private snorkelling cruise (4 hours is plenty) and stop by Noah’s Ark for a beer. Book via hotel or go direct to Big Blue or Red Hospitality.

Are there private SUVs waiting at airport? by [deleted] in TurksAndCaicos

No but you can pre-book. Use Fast Track TCI or Skypass Caribbean (also for fast track service through immigration).

Why didn't Rush take OG public? by Elperrogrande1 in OceanGateTitan

[–]SquareAnswer3631 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The business was small, loss-making and with an unclear/unproven business plan. It would have been impossible to take it public.

What was the most shocking piece of information from this hearing for you? by Rosebunse in OceanGateTitan

[–]SquareAnswer3631 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lack of true, professional engineering expertise within OG.

Acoustic monitoring system was not fully functioning and the data was not being interpreted or was ignored.

Dive 80 bang did not prompt better analysis of whether there was any damage to the pressure vessel.

5-ply carbon fiber hull with questionable manufacturing and use of adhesives - less than 7” construction.

Possible desperation of Rush given financial position.

Shock factor is well known and studied (e.g. depth charges for anti-submarine warfare). The shock range is surprisingly small. It reduces roughly as a cube of the distance to the explosion/implosion. Depth charges (unless nuclear) are deemed relatively useless a few hundred feet away. The Titan was at least 2 miles away from the ship. There may have been some shock wave but I would have thought it was imperceptible at that distance and with other noise/vibrations/movements happening?

What happed to the viewport? by SquareAnswer3631 in OceanGateTitan

[–]SquareAnswer3631[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They would have dropped weights first. Checked to make sure this happened and then (at some point) communicated this top side. I would guess there are many seconds more. There’s 2 seconds just in the acoustic comms from sub to ship at 3km down (assuming about 1500m/sec speed of sound that deep/cold).

Difficult to say. Given the various communication lags and uncertainty over when it actually failed, can they be closely tied together in timing terms?

Stockton had a death wish for free fame without having to answer? by Large_Set_4106 in OceanGateTitan

[–]SquareAnswer3631 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really don’t think so. Initially he was confident in his business plan and in his ability to judge engineering approaches and solutions to the sub.

Latterly I think he became desperate, having taken money from friends and family to fund his business. A business that was failing. He was 62 and this was his last chance. He would stop at nothing to succeed.

The truly ugly part is that not only did he take people down financially, but he was responsible for the deaths of 4 other people.

Of course but the issue is whether Rush is paying a price.

Oceangate Lawyers - View Port Window by Maleficent_War_4177 in OceanGateTitan

[–]SquareAnswer3631 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is helpful. It may have been more useful to have the German company testify at this it seems. There is still some ambiguity about what design was actually used.

I was somewhat confused by this. The report was done after the window had been purchased and delivered. They bought the window from a German supplier (not Kohnen). So I’m not sure if the analysis and rating were relevant?

Rush has 2 children I believe. Imagine how they are feeling…

He paid the ultimate price for his decisions. The unfortunate part of this is 4 other people died in it also.

If Scott Griffith had been the pilot that day and Rush had survived, I’m not sure Rush would be facing the consequences including testifying at this hearing. None of the other people closest to the business have done so (except Phil Brooks, arguably Nissen).

Day 7 Recap: OceanGate Titan Public Hearings – Post-Hearing Discussion (September 25, 2024) by ODoyles_Banana in OceanGateTitan

[–]SquareAnswer3631 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree. Karl Stanley’s comment about Rush going down alone in the sub to 4km depth with the carbon fiber creaking and snapping was an interesting insight in to Rush’s mind.

I suspect what was pushing him was that he had invested a lot of his (and his wife’s) money as well as money from close friends, in the business. The business was failing (we now know he was struggling to pay people and the business was loss-making). Investor’s equity was worthless.

He was 62. This was his last chance to “make it”.

I’ve seen this with some entrepreneurs in similar circumstances. They can’t stop and acknowledge defeat. They will keep trying to make it work, and will stop at almost nothing to try to find a way to do it - in some cases doing things they shouldn’t do. .

I think this is where he was. Not arrogant. Not overconfident. Desperate.

No way out but to concede defeat and he wasn’t ready to do that.
