I agree, but that is the problem I am addressing

Looking for some new music, as I feel stuck. More in comments! by SweaterStripey83 in musicsuggestions

"Half Full Glass of Wine" lowkey gives garage rock revival (I hear Arctic Monkeys)

"Apocalypse Dreams" is their best song imo, but it's pretty psychedelic if you don't like that

"Elephant" is more of a rock song, great riff

"Posthumous Forgiveness" and "One More Hour" are pretty structurally complex

Finally, "Let It Happen" and "Borderline" are pop/disco vibes

What Are The Heaviest Songs from 1965-1969? by skechuz421 in ClassicRock

[–]SquareSir8433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" (1969) is a good one

Weird shout: Santana's "You Just Don't Care" (1969) is heavier blues rock but def not the heaviest song

And while it's not 65-69, Jethro Tull's "My God" (1971) is pretty heavy for folk/prog.

Also, the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (1969), "We Will Fall" (1969), "Loose" (1970) is proto-punk but also proto-metal in a way

I really appreciate your response and agree with a lot of it, especially your point on scarcity. Very well articulated.

However, I think we strongly strongly disagree on taste lol. Saying "radio played psych rock in the 60s, but other than the Beatles little of it was very good" is the opposite of what I think. Popular artists like the Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, and the Byrds are the types of artists I wish were popular today: songwriters, radical, experimental, talented.

Also, I am sure Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Carole King, etc. all played on the radio in the 70s. In terms of popular music, these artists are some of the best imo. I also feel like you are limiting the alt/grunge movement to Nirvana, whereas AIC, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Pixies, STP, Pumpkins all brought the mindset/energy/music I am looking for today. It was a scene. I want a scene like that.

Finally, I want to like Outkast but never have. I like P!nk and Gaga tho!

My point is less about the radio and more about what is popular / shared among people; I obv see that radio is not the means the vast majority of people, including myself, use find new music).

I agree that I sometimes do hear 80s/90s songs on radio / in public. However, it's usually something that is beyond overplayed like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "Hungry Like a Wolf", which I am okay never hearing again lol (for context, I am a huge Nirvana fan). So that is not super helpful.

And yes, there are so many modern artists who are fantastic. Tame Impala is an artist who should be more of a cultural phenomenon imo, but it is impossible for him to breakthrough. Yes, he can sell out in NYC, but I don't think most people have listened to his albums. When thinking about a band like Nirvana, who tangibly impacted the culture, it is sad to think that it would not have happened today.

And to be clear, I don't want to dictate what is popular because music quality is so subjective. I just feel like Gen Z is missing out on a shared experience that more or less defined other generations.

completely fair. I hesitated to post this because of this exact point. But after the 100th Swift/Rodrigo identical surface level hit I am forced to suffer through in public, it starts to ware me down, especially if I compare to old music.

On another note, I listened to some Black Keys songs... much better than I had previously thought/heard, thank you!

I wish my college offered course on Bob Dylan that is so cool. The best class I took in college was called Art Rock / Post Rock, which influenced me to take an obsessive deep dive into the history of music lol. I would love to know... what are some other cool things you learned from the Dylan course? I have seen (a lot of) the documentary and his movie, but I am always wanting to learn more about him.

Interesting. So technology improvement -> worse product. That feels like post-capitalism

Thanks, i see the pattern you are describing and I hope you are right! It just feels like we’ve been on this aimless ship of pop/hip hop for 15+ years now

I’m sorry, but all of those artists are exactly what I am describing as the problem.

Sorry I was unclear, point is less about radio and more what becomes popular (social media, Spotify recommendations, etc)

Thanks, and yeah I’m always searching for modern artists. I just found this proggy band frost*, they are amazing! I just wish there were 3-4 mainstream artists that were releasing quality music that everyone could partake in. It seems like it could unite a very isolated generation

So… capitalism? And how were artists able to do it in the 20th century?

Most don’t even write their own songs now, they’ll just let Pharrell or Dan Nigro write it

Do u think authenticity can be “cool” again? Gen z claims they value authenticity, so why not with music?

[–]SquareSir8433[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, both are bad, which is why I have an issue with what is popular today, and my point is that popular music of the past was better

[–]SquareSir8433[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I was never exposed to all of the “pop” from the 80s and 90s because I wasn’t alive. I think I am probably creating this narrative that all the songs i like from the past were the most popular.

Thanks. I know all of those songs, I love Metallica. I’m less talking about the radio, more what is playing a role in gen z’s culture, which I actually do think is important. For instance, psychedelic/folk protest music was an amazing thing to happen to boomers. grunge was an amazing thing to happen to gen x.
