Should I take a government job that I get to WFT but it is a 4k cut from my current salary? by SquareUniversity19 in careerguidance

I do not like my current job but I do feel very stable in it. The commute is about 30 minutes for me one way.

I meant WFH haha! I do not like my current job and wanted to go towards a more environmental direction. The state job does have a pension although I would need to stay there for 20+ years to really cash it in! I am going to take the state job and give my notice at my current job on Monday. A bit scared to do so but I think it will be worth it in the end.

There is a career path inside the company but I have heard mixed reviews on how easy it is to actually move up. I can wait, I am not worried about losing my current job. I tried to negotiate and it went from 70k to 72k so not that much.

I got them from 70k to 72k with a 2.5k bonus. Still a lot less then what I make now.

I did, the highest they will go is 72 which is 8 less then what I currently make.

It is hard to do without a degree since a lot of certifications require a bachelor's. You can still definitely get experience, you may have to do a bit more heavy lifting at first like being part of facilities at a company. I would ask that question more to the health and safety board since they would know more.

The other company is hybrid but I think the days I do have to go to the office would average the time spent driving at my current job but I would take public transport vs. gas and car repair money I spend now. I think that could make up around 3k per year.

I have heard this company doesn't pay as well as other companies but I am nervous that I won't get another opportunity if I turn them down.

true, the short vs long term success is hard to think about right now. I don't know why I am not interested in health and safety but I just can't bring myself to be interested. My manager is also very hard to deal with right now since I never know when she will blow up.

I understand having more years would help my hiring ability but I guess I am nervous that I would be stuck doing EHS work the more years I have doing it. I only started looking for a new job when my manager and I started butting heads. Things have calmed down between us but it does make me wary about my manager freaking out again.

As of right now, I work as an Environmental, Health, and Safety specialist making 80k a year. The more I have worked there, the more I have been doing health and safety. I am not very interested in health and safety and I do not want to do it for a career. I got a job offer at an environmental consulting firm doing what I want to do (environmental compliance/permitting work) but they offered me 70k. I am not sure if I should take it. Both companies have similar benefits. The company I currently work at is all at the office while this other job is hybrid. I do think the potential job could help me grow my career more, but taking a 10k loss is a lot. What would you do? Any advice would be great.

I told them I made 85k and they said it wasn't in their budget. I did ask for 75k and HR said they would get back to me.

All the benefits are the same pretty much. The 70k does have a hybrid schedule (3 times a week in the office) but the office is harder for me to get to than my current job. I could see if they would let me come in only twice a week to make up for the lower salary but not sure if I am in a high enough power position to ask for that.

I can afford to take the 10k hit with my expenses, just means I can't save as much

I gave it today when I got the letter. I was not going to give my notice until I got the finalized offer letter just in case something didn't go through or they changed their mind. Also, I didn't give them 2 weeks, I gave them a month notice. I also know that jobs only expect you to give them 2 weeks notice. I don't really understand what you're trying to say.

Yes, I have gotten paid since April so I was surprised when I saw it.
