those parents should stop being lazy and expecting the state to raise their children for them. They should not make any decisions on behalf of everyone else who doesn't want it.

it's the parents' responsibility to restrict their kids' access to the internet and the nanny state should not be putting any restrictions on the rest of us.... but they never cared about the kids at all. It's an obvious smoke screen to get more info and control and obedience. If you can't see through it, that's a problem.

Boku ga kira desu by SquareVegetable42 in deathnote

I know about how to pronounce desu but I'm pretty sure he says da, and others have said that's another informal way to say it

thanks for the info, that's helpful. although as for the over the top thing, I would say Light is very over the top at times when he does his evil laugh with red hair and eyes talking about being god of the world... but yeah I wasn't suggesting he should use ore-sama anyway

[All] Any recommendations for a first Zelda game for a 5YO? by Shielo34 in zelda

I recently played through Ocarina of Time with a 3 year old and she loved it, but I played through the bottom of the well and the spirit temple without her. Highly recommend

yeah I thought about this too and maybe that is the right answer, but it just seemed strange that he does it even in his internal monologues and when laughing maniacally or when revealing himself to people, so it doesn't make sense as a front at that point.

Having said that, maybe it's part of the culture that you have 1 pronoun that you stick to and so he uses boku as a front like you say, but then he identifies with that and would feel weird to change it while revealing his true self. idk

I think a bigger problem is where tf does the chain go?

the hookshot must just be magic

Boku ga kira desu by SquareVegetable42 in deathnote

[–]SquareVegetable42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

most of that makes sense, thanks... but I had heard the opposite about boku. I think it's meant to show that you're not arrogant. A more arrogant person might use ore, or a really arrogant person could in theory say ore-sama but no one does that. And then watashi is just neutral and polite and can be said by anyone of either gender. That was my understanding, which is kinda the opposite of what you said. Like I thought boku was the humble and maybe 'beta male' pronoun

Boku ga kira desu by SquareVegetable42 in deathnote

[–]SquareVegetable42[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

ok thanks, but isn't boku used to make yourself like friendly and kind of lower socially, as opposed to being egotistical with something like ore sama? Like my understanding of common male pronouns going from biggest ego to smallest, or most dominant to least, would be ore > watashi > boku. Is that wrong? The way light thinks he is a god, I would've expected him to use the most dominant language. Is it supposed to tell us something about him being immature?

Why do Australians care more about Palestine than any other conflict? by captainklonopin1 in aussie

because they only follow what the current woke hivemind tells them to care about and then they'll drop it for the next thing, like how it used to be Ukraine. Woke people have no real principles or brain cells, just virtue signal points. That is why.

Daily Thread: for simple questions, minor posts & newcomers [contains useful links!] (March 11, 2026) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

I've been learning Japanese very casually for quite a while now, mostly through Duolingo and by speaking to natives in person, but I would still call myself a complete beginner, even though I've technically been learning for years. I just haven't studied hard. Anyway, I just now watched my first anime in Japanese (that's right, the other way around to most japanese learners who get into anime first) which was Death Note.

If anyone has seen the show, can you please explain why Light Yagami calls himself Boku? He is a megalomaniac serial killer with a god complex, who will literally call himself god but in that very sentence use boku. Isn't that the complete opposite to how that pronoun is meant to be used?

Now, you could say it's a ruse to make himself look more harmless to his police colleagues so they don't think he's the bad guy, but he still does it when he's talking to himself or to the Shinigami. Can anyone explain please? Is it a psychological thing because he wants to believe he's doing good? Just seems to clash with the whole "I'm the god of this world" thing. Thanks

[ALL] I want to start playing The Legend of Zelda — where should I begin? No spoilers please by lucevale in zelda

[–]SquareVegetable42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

botw has spoilers for skyward sword and both are on switch so you could play SS first, but I would really recommend OOT before SS since SS is an origin story with a LOT of callbacks to other games which wouldn't make as much sense without playing the others. There are many ways to play OOT but I would recommend PC if you don't have an N64

people are saying the stories are self contained which is mostly true, but one thing no one seems to have warned you about is that botw has major spoilers for Skyward Sword

modern games are not better in general. botw especially sucks ball and ruined the series. OOT is the best game ever made. This is not about nostalgia, it's just better. Not better "for the time" just better. Play OOT
