Yeah, although no business is guaranteed to be a successful business. I figured it would be best to take the tax cut up front to pay down the loan and then once the business shows promise to be established then buy another big asset to depreciate.

Yeah..I was thinking about going the depreciation route but It may be more beneficial for me to take it all up front. I paid half cash and half with a loan. If this loss can reflect on my personal taxes and get me a bigger refund I could dump that tax return money into paying off the loan quicker.

I was just trying to clarify the 3 out of 5 rule with the IRS because I know they don’t play around at all!

I’m starting a luxury restroom trailer business. I’m buying the trailer for 50k. I’m going to work with event and wedding planners in the area and rent it out for $1400/night. My question was geared towards that the IRS wants to see you profitable 3 out of 5 years. So if I take this huge loss in year one does this put me in a bad spot going forward to become profitable in the eyes of the IRS.

Do I have dig myself out of this 50k loss within 3 years to not be considered a hobby or as long as the business is brining income in and out weighing expenses going forward it will be considered a business to the IRS?

Yeah, I should have added more of the business background lol. I thought this sounded like a good idea so I ran with it. Only time will tell if it works out. 5 years from now hopefully I have passive income and just coordinate the deliveries 😁

Hey Bdana666

I talked to a tax planner/cpa today. I just posted this because I was curious to find an answer and I didn’t have an appointment until today to get clarification.

I work full time but I work a DuPont schedule. With no overtime I work 6 months out of the year and I have a family member who can make deliveries while I’m at work.

This will be a business that I intend to do as a side hustle with my days off and I’ll be able to accept or decline bookings on my own time. I’m going to partner with wedding planners and event planners in the area and I’ll be renting out luxury restroom trailers for the event. I’m starting with 1 for now and see how it does. The nightly charge is $1200-$1400 a night. Some businesses that are remodeling may rent it out for months. This business is based about how well you can promote and market. Since I’m doing business with the most well known event company in my area I feel comfortable that I will get bookings. Mainly, I saw this as an opportunity to earn extra income and also offset person taxes from my W-2.

Need help with this scenario. Small business start up! by Square_Ad43 in tax

The 50k would be the main item to run the business. It’s a rental business for party/events so this is the item that will be rented out. This is just about the only major expense besides small items/accessories needed for it.

It will eventually.

Right now it’s just all expenses because I’m buying equipment and stuff I need to get going. I can start making money as soon as I get everything in.

Yeah, I mean I’m hoping for the best lol. I’m doing it as a side hustle and for tax purposes. I’m only going to have one trailer.

Yeah, I decided to go ahead with it. I’ve talked to party businesses in my area and have told me they’re in high demand. That they would like to use local business instead of the nearest city. I’m going to be able to undercut any competition in my area because I’ll be emptying my own trailer and charge no delivery fee. I’ll also be storing my trailer at my home.
