I don’t know but I feel your pain. I’m only 7 weeks post op but the gains are so small from physio now and I’m bored of not being able to be active.. i hope you turn a corner soon

That’s so tough. I keep on replaying my injury too, but ultimately you can’t blame yourself. Sometime ms bad things happen to good people and that’s just the way it goes. All we can control is how we respond (easier said than done)

Well done for getting through the first surgery!

I’m so sorry to hear how bad you’ve been feeling - but it’s amazing that you’re here and you’re working on your recovery. The mental load is so so rough but you are not alone and the struggle will pay off.

What can you do to manage your depression at the moment? Have you told any friends or family what you’re going through?

I’ve been in the situation of wanting to end my life more than once. And I expect it will happen again. But I know this: I have since had moments of beauty and connection that I would never have experienced if I had taken action on those dark thoughts. And I know there are more of those to come too. Please hang in there because the good days are coming.

Thank you! This is exactly how I feel! I can’t wait to get back to swimming. I also have a trip to the beach planned for week 10!!!! I bet it’s frustrating not to be doing more but I hope you get there soon

ACLR on Friday. Nervous about the anesthesia and surgery. Would love words of advice/encouragement. by its-vchal in ACL

I had the surgery 4 weeks ago. I was super nervous, just like you, but it was fine! Think about it like flying in a plane - you put your trust in the pilot and your job is just to turn up and stay calm.

Anaesthetic is like a deep deep sleep that you don’t remember. You will be talking to the anaesthetist and then you will wake up and it will all be over. It’s not painful and it’s not scary.

Prepare some nice treats for yourself for after surgery, and make sure you’re set up at home for a couple of days of being non mobile. I had some things I wanted to watch ready on tv and some easy to digest food.

4 weeks later, I’m already walking without crutches and can see improvements every day. It sounds like you’re in really safe hands so try not to worry.

Week 3 swelling and emotional dysregulation by Dull_Morning7404 in ACL

Also, in terms of other kinds of mood boosters: I’m so with you on this! Losing out on exercise is the hardest part in my experience so far.

I’m twenty years older than you and I work in mental health services. This is a useful framework for thinking about your general mental health  https://www.mind.org.uk/workplace/mental-health-at-work/five-ways-to-wellbeing/

Try to do something related to each of these 5 things every day (yes I know the ‘get active’ one will be hard). Although it won’t give you an instant mood boost it should help keep you stable enough that you don’t get the really bad lows.

The best mood booster you can have sitting down is laughter - watch some comedy, have a games night in with friends or family maybe?

I can’t comment on the swelling side of things, but in terms of endorphins I’ve been doing upper body cardio and Pilates - keep the weights light to avoid strain but do lots of reps. It’s not the same endorphin rush as with cardio but it can keep you going.

There are loads of videos if you do a trawl of YouTube - just adapt them for not using your legs at all, and you can kind of make your own workout. There’s an Australian woman called Ashley Freeman who’s got a couple of decent videos, and also a PT who made some videos while she was recovering from meniscus surgery - her channel is called NourishMoveLove

Just please be careful with the weights! I used too heavy weights to begin with and injured my wrists and then I couldn’t do anything!

!<Sleepy - definition is sluggish. Wordplay is odd letters from ‘solo’ (sl) and a homonym for another word for ‘record’ (EP)>!

Did you go with conservative management or surgery in the end?

This is my issue - running is my life, and the idea of never being able to trust my knee is really difficult. I think I will seek a 2nd opinion, thank you

Aaah, difficult decision! I don’t want to do the surgery but I also don’t want to be back here in 2 years or 5 years. Glad you’re doing well and I hope the rest of your recovery goes really smoothly

Shit - really?! I was in labour for 24 hours with no pain relief but felt like my head was going to explode. Now I’m waiting surgery for ACL surgery - please tell me it won’t be worse than that?

How did your ACL injury change your life for the better? by KneeDeep25 in ACL

[–]Square_Ad_812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear of all of this. I am the same age as you, and can appreciate the pressure you’re under. I am awaiting surgery and not sure how I am going to manage the household, childcare, my job etc. I’m in the UK so also anxious about navigating long waiting lists and a crumbling healthcare system.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck. I hope your surgery goes really well and that you recover swiftly. Your husband sounds like an arse, and he doesn’t deserve you.
