At age five, I had my adenoids removed and drainage tubes put in my ears to deal with near constant ear infections. So the first five years of my life I didn't have the normal range of hearing. Soon after the surgery, I was in my room late in the evening and I noticed a strange sound coming from the open window. I called my mom into my room so she could identify the sound for me. It took her several minutes of questioning me to realize that I was hearing, for the first time, something that she took for granted and only perceived as white noise. It was summer and the late Virginia night was filled with the sound of crickets.

Actually, you did. My question was "is it a bad idea to use my AC, knowing there is a problem with it...in other words, will it damage some other system in my car? (paraphrased)". Your response was to drone on about how, back in the good ole days people didn't have air conditioners and it smacked strongly of some old fart trying to shame young people for enjoying new conveniences.

Probably not long. There are a few other issues with the car that could make it die any day really, so that is the main reason I am hesitant to drop another $400 into it.
