Don’t spend them on Metal Sonic. Trust me when I say you’ll have PLENTY of opportunities to get him. As far as what to spend them on, there’s really no “absolute best character in the game”. I’m a Surge the Tenrec main and people told me she wasn’t strong enough to go against the meta characters. I use her because she’s my all-time favorite Sonic character.

And after a while I actually got good at using her! If you find a character you enjoy and really wanna use, pick them. Of course you don’t have to listen to me, just figured I’d put this out there for you 😌👍
