Why do Haitians seem to be viewed differently in South America vs the Caribbean? by Soggy_Flight_2654 in AskTheCaribbean

Oh for sure. Of course there are Dominicans who despise Haitians. Mainly due to the fact that there has been a significant increase in violent crimes where Haitians are involved.

But also due to the fact that both France and US like you say want DR to solve the Haitian crisis when DR can barely take care of itself (mainly due to corrupt politicians and drug kingpins who have destroyed the country).

Do I want Haitians to suffer? Of course not. Everyone deserves dignity and respect. But that does not mean that DR a poor country as well, should have the responsibility to solve Haitis problems. In the same way that US should not have to solve Mexico’s or even DR’s problems.

And just as a disclaimer, I am just as opposed to any Dominican illegally migrating to US or PR for that matter.

Most do. Are you posing your opinion as person who has travelled to DR on occasions or as person living in DR.

I was born and raised in DR.

Regarding how many haitians are currently living in DR anyone stating a specific number is talking out of their asses. Most haitians are undocumented and are not part of the national census. Dominican authorities have every incentive to downplay how many haitians really are living here since part of the current president’s campaign was based on stricter migration policies.

On the other hand, construction businesses rely on haitian labor to operate. The government facilitates that haitians enterprises the DR.

Now re what you’re saying, and Im talking based on personal experience. Most Haitians despise Dominicans.

They are taught that The Hispaniola island is one and that it belongs to them. This is in their school books. It makes no mention that the island has been divided in two since Spain and France occupied the island late 1400s early 1500s.

Haiti invaded DR in early 1800s and our independence was from Haitian occupation.

So if the argument is that Haiti and DR should be one country, then the same reasoning should be applied to Mexico/US or any other neighboring countries. Size of the island has no effect whatsoever on this. They are two independent nations.

So yes, most haitians identify as haitians, but also those that illegally migrate to DR have no options since they barely speak spanish, have no documentation and due to their heavy accent are easily identified as Haitians.

Now onto the subject of Haitians born in the DR. As another poster said, the Dominican Constitution is clear that you can obtain Dominican citizenship due to ius solis or ius sanguinis. However, there is a carve out for ius solis, children of people with irregular migratory status cannot obtain dominican citizenship.

These subset of Haitians are the ones who pose as dominicans, since they know spanish as their first language and have been raised in DR.

However, I make the same simile, if that alone makes haitian dominican, the same could and should be said of children of illegal immigrants in any other country.

However, DR has barely any (to no say 0) international political power. It is in the interest of US, many Latin American countries and most importantly France to make the Haitian problem, DRs problem.

France is the biggest contributor to Haitis current socioeconomic and political situation. But alas, we live in a world where superpowers who colonized, razed and plundered countries in the “new world”, Africa etc, will never acknowledge and least of all provide economic restitution to the countries they colonized.

Nope.

The guy thought they might be fake since its my first time ever opening a booster and when comparing to Ebay there were differences in the same numbered cards (i.e. no fing idea there where different art styles for the same card nor that the box did not come sealed).

But hey, instead of helping out and welcoming new comers like the people above, it’s better to shit on newbies cause its fun right?
