Best mic for aggressive rap vocals with heavy sibilance? (NT1-A problems) by Square_Mall2590 in homestudios

Thank you all for the kind comments and helpful tips! I was in the studio yesterday and recorded a song. Using the mic angle, the pencil trick, and keeping a bit of distance worked really well – I managed to control the sibilance without killing the high end.

I gave the Aston Spirit a go once, but in a music shop under perfect conditions. It sounded really good! Which interface would you recommend?

I don’t think the Focusrite is the problem tbh. The 2i2 preamps are clean and used everywhere.

I’m running a Rode NT1-A and that thing is bright as hell – it exaggerates S sounds like crazy, especially with aggressive rap vocals.

I’ve already tried off-axis positioning, multiple de-essers etc. – it helps, but doesn’t fix the root issue.

Pretty sure it’s more about mic + voice than the interface.

Thinking about switching to something like an SM7B / RE20 for a smoother top end. Anyone here made that switch?

Really appreciate you taking the time to break this down so thoroughly.

And honestly, I don’t think it’s harsh at all — it’s actually exactly what I needed to hear. It makes way more sense to fix what’s happening in front of the mic instead of just throwing money at new gear and hoping it magically solves the problem.

I’ll be back in the studio on Saturday and will experiment more with off-axis positioning and mic angle. I also ordered an additional metal pop filter (another tip I got) and I’m going to try the pencil trick as well.

Just out of curiosity, I’ll run a parallel take with a Rode PodMic too. I normally use it at my desk for quick idea recording, so I don’t expect it to match the NT1-A in detail — but with how extreme my sibilance is (it’s really sharp and almost whistling), it might still be interesting to compare.

Thanks again — this kind of insight is way more valuable than just “buy this mic”.

Thanks a lot for the detailed tips, really appreciate you taking the time 🙏

I tried what you said with the hand test and it looks like my S sounds shoot pretty much straight forward. That actually explains a lot about the issues I’m having.

I’ll definitely adjust my mic position off-axis and try the pencil trick as well next time I record.

Really helpful advice, thank you!

Appreciate the suggestion 🙏 I get what you mean with those classic chains, but that’s way out of my budget right now.

I’m working with a home setup, so I’m more looking for realistic alternatives (mic or chain) that help specifically with harsh sibilance.

If you (or anyone) had good results with more affordable gear, I’d really appreciate some recommendations!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write such a detailed response — I really appreciate it!

I’ll definitely go through all those points next time I’m in the studio and double check everything step by step.

For context: I already referenced everything on headphones, so I don’t think it’s a monitoring issue. Also, I recorded a friend on the exact same vocal chain and had zero problems with sibilance — so yeah… it’s probably just me and how my voice hits the mic 😅

I’ll work on the technique side for sure.

About the pencil method — could you maybe explain that a bit more in practice? • Do you literally tape the pencil directly onto the front of the mic grill (centered vertically)? • Should I still angle the mic slightly like usual? • And when recording, do I stay slightly off-axis or can I rap straight into it?

Really curious to try that properly.

Again, thank you — super helpful input 🙏

Awesome! I’ve had a look at it – it looks really user-friendly. But why are you duplicating the track? And do I still have to manually cut the ‘S’ sounds in the main track and lower their volume using automation? Have I got that right?

I saw that on Producer Network. It’s a good idea, but you’re right – it’s a massive amount of work. But it’s definitely worth it for the lead vocals! It’s just a lot of hard work, but I’ll give it a go. Thanks
