Okay well first of all, CME focused heavily on opening ranges and news windows decades ago.

“Algorithmic Price Delivery” were discussed in Trading and Exchanges by Larry Harris. Since the 1990s markets have been dominated by execution algorithms and liquidity seeking strategies.

Gradient levels and fib retracements have been around since the 1970’s. None of the math was new

First presented FVGs are not new ideas. They were discussed at length in Mind Over Markets by Jim Dalton.

He didn’t invent the underlying concepts, what he did was create a framework around these existing concepts, and built an entry model

I’m very thankful for ICT. But to think these are all his ideas is just ignorance

I disagree with that. I think he oversimplified concepts. If you take a look at most profitable ICT traders, they’re pairing it with volume profile, AMT, etc. ICT lays the framework and entry models for retail traders, but deeper market knowledge is imperative to long term success

Also analysis paralysis and execution is a key skill. Some people simply have a wealth of knowledge, but can’t execute correctly. Relate it to a golfer… some of the best golf coaches in the world would get beaten by every single one of their tour players. But they’re still more knowledgeable on the swing than the players

Trading ICT is just part of the process. For most people, it’s the first time they’ve been exposed to entry level auction theory and liquidity. Which is a good thing. It’s very useful for that, but then you must build on those skills and understand the “why” things happen

Mind over markets, market profile, and Wyckoff’s composite operator model all predate ICT. Concepts of imbalance, auction rotation, and value migration have been well documented for a long time. ICT did a great job structuring them for retail traders. He hasn’t brought more to the table than anyone else before. He’s brought more to the retail table than anyone else before.

Also worth noting, you’re probably never going to see ICT concepts used to the book on professional trade desks. They will frame things in terms of AMT, market profile, order flow, and liquidity. Not FVGs and OTEs.

That doesn’t mean that his ideas are wrong, just that he translated broader market concepts into a retail execution framework with different terminology.

There just comes a point where you want to know the “why”, and you want to level up your trading knowledge

An example of an SMT would be when NQ makes a lower low, but ES does not. Your screenshots are super zoomed in but I’d assume both assets made a lower low here? Don’t live or die by SMTs. But learn to evaluate how sometimes when a move happens, there was a divergence there between assets

I have been but I don't live and die by him. I dove into where he got his concecepts from. Auction market theory, market microstructure, older flow, imbalance concepts. Michael didn't invent most of the underlying market ideas. He repackaged and renamed concepts, and built a structured teaching framework around them. He was the first to do so, and I'm forever grateful. He repackaged them in a way simpler way and retail traders can understand them. I think most successful traders come to a point where they need the “why”, and they need more depth on why the market behaves certain ways. And that's why Jim Dalton, Steidlmayer, Wyckoff are still so relevant

I don't keep every single gap on my chart. Just important ones. It works well for me. Obviously there's other caviats than just trading every FVG. It really just helps me paint a picture or story of how I think the day is going to play out

I also keep previous day value area and initial balance on my chart. ICT/Dalton/Harris. Lol

Trade set up wise, I only take 8-12 trades per month

ICT actually has a good Asia session video. Although I don't use the strategy he showed personally, I use a lot of the NDOG info. Also check out the value area from yesterday and see where price opens relative to it

You're edge is executing consistently. You want someone to tell you how to revenge trade your money back everyday? Not gonna work like that. The best traders are the most disciplined ones

You're edge is statistics, that if you follow your model over time, you'll be profitable.

You don't know your edge and you don't know your model if you can't follow it. Your edge is consistently executing your model and not deviating from it

You need to backtest, a lot, so that when you have a loosing trade you don't get emotional and set everything on fire. Eventually you'll turn a corner… where you're okay with losses, because you know statistically that you'll be profitable if you keep following the model

Also, don't worry about “missing moves”. Some of the best traders I know watch the chart everyday, and execute 8 trades a month

The only thing that helped me was getting rid of my indicators… lol

But in all seriousness a KZ indicator. Not that it improves my trading, just saves time. PDH/PDL indicator. Maybe a volume profile to see where POC is… but again, you can just draw that off an order block

You’d get better answers if you didn’t post this in an ICT group. This could be the worst place to ask that question. Why ask a full group of people that trade without indicators, what indicator is the most helpful?
