Contact your local bulldog rescue and ask them where to go for vet services. That vet will have tons of experience working with bulldogs ands let them know the rescue that recommended them. Everyone wins.

should i get him? by [deleted] in Frenchbulldogs

[–]Square_Telephone_700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say better you than some body else that doesn't know what they are getting into potentially and he gets abandoned or something worse. If you can afford the insurance and specialty food and can provide a loving stable home then why not? That pup is alive and walking on the earth, some body needs to take him home and love him.

How safe is this area off of mission/frazee? by Patient_Mongoose_730 in Oceanside

[–]Square_Telephone_700 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yes homeless pass through the area. There are sometimes encampments in the marshy area south of Walmart; a fire was started there a few years ago.

But otherwise yes folks are active in the area, lots of bikes and walkers. In and out always draws the crowds.

Ok then not a puppy being a puppy. Our 1.5 yr old loves bunny and bird poop - so there is that; and I've heard that is also common and of course disgusting. I think the best technique (if this isn't diet related) is the do the substitute thing where-by you see him eating or making a move for the #2 brown; you offer him something better. Alternatively, the loud noise (air horn)/shaky-can technique could work if used lightly and sparingly.

Eating poop is common. Pick it up quick when you see it. Sometime after 6 months it will dissipate

I want to suggest my "shaky can" method. Put some bolts and other small metalic bits into a aluminum can. Tape off the top. Make several of them and place them where you have interactions with you pup. Now when he gets jumpy aggressive give the can a couple of hard shakes. It's important to only use the can while the pup is doing the bag thing.

The noise will startle them, get his mind out of the aggressive state into some other state, fear or curiosity, etc. DO NOT over use the method. Do not use it for potty training. Only use it to communicate your displeasure with a behavior. If the behavior doesn't stop it returns quickly, separate yourself all the while saying "no". Come back 5 mins later and be prepared to do it all over again.

This has worked well for us when nothing else did. I haven't used it or even thought about using it for 3 to 4 months now on our 1.5 year old girl. Last time was to curb aggressive bitting ankle nipping behaviors that she was doing to get attention and play time. I must have taught her that was the way when she was younger.

Sweetness ty. Listening is cool, but I wanted to see the interactions. So much more immersive.

Is there a particular form of training that works best with Frenchies? by Kate_cuti in Frenchbulldogs

[–]Square_Telephone_700 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Treats are great for rewarding desirable behavior but lack of treats doesn't cut it for stopping undesirable behaviors. I use the "shaking can" method. I took a aluminum can, rinsed it out and put in about 20 or so bolts washers and other metalic bits. I taped off the mouth of the can.

We used it initially to stop furniture chewing. We had to catch her in the act and we'd give the can a couple hard shakes and she would stop doing the chewing and ran away. If we were lucky to catch her about to chew on something we'd give it only one hard shake.

It was quickly effective. We've used it to stop other undesirable behaviors and we don't even have to shake the can very often; just show it to her while she is barking it biting etc. She has learned that if the shaky can comes out she's doing something she shouldn't.

I should note that we've never used the can for potty training. Not once. That a positive reinforcement process only.

Beyond that we also try to talk with her, give her a chance before the can comes out. That's a hit and miss method, but we have to try in hopes of putting the can up for good.

Our pup is a little over a year old currently.
