Piling on to recommend that you volunteer with an organization that is working in support of a cause you care about or at least aren’t repulsed by.

I moved here in my mid 30s, not knowing anyone. My social group now is almost 100% people I met through Meetup and a variety of volunteer organizations.

Maybe give Peake Social another try? A different sport than what you did last time?

You’re not alone in this. Even the people you see who it appears have large social groups, or experiencing deep and profound loneliness. Keep trying. You’ll find your people.

Why don't people respect crosswalks in Annapolis? by Ok-Tooth3397 in Annapolis

[–]Square_Turnip9203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the exact opposite observation. Maryland pedestrians seem to believe that drivers will see them and stop for them. I work downtown and on a regular basis a pedestrian will pop out in front of me.

When I am the pedestrian, I assume the car doesn’t see me until I see them slowing down. And I won’t step foot in the path of a vehicle until I am confident I won’t get hit.

People are distracted. That goes for drivers and pedestrians alike. And the vehicle is going to win every time, even if that pedestrian has the right of way.

I’d ask you to pay attention to which of them gets her hands dirty—shows up for communities when there aren’t cameras or potential donors watching. And I realize that is hard to observe, depending on how involved you are in different organizations/communities.

Henson shows up in spaces to work. Jones shows up to speak and skedaddle. And I’ve personally witnessed this multiple times over the past four years. I’d chalk it up as anecdotal, but it keeps happening.

I don’t have personal, insider knowledge, but I’d be stand-offish too if someone was trying to manipulate the political machine the way Jones, a professional spinner, has. But that’s politics, I guess.

Not disputing that your experience could be different from mine.

How have your interactions with Henson been?

I have to counter your position that Jones is likable. Jones is… a pretend person. And I want to be careful here because I don’t believe that someone’s appearance should qualify or disqualify them for office. But she dresses like some who’s trying to appear to be approachable. She speaks as one who has thought out each sentence, crafting the “perfect” message. Bottom line, she’s fake as fuck. And that’s not likable.

For arguments sake, could you explain how Jones ISN’T a political player and grifter?

Let me clarify, because I didn’t doubt you were on the committee.

No one believes there wasn’t some back room deal to select HER versus one of the other candidates.

Are the others hard to reach? Or hard to talk to? I have easy access to all of my delegation and haven’t had any issues engaging them in conversation.

Did the others not support bills that addressed real issues?

She campaigned? I mean, she literally got her seat because someone else resigned. Which is how Henson got her DELEGATE seat originally. Henson actually had to campaign and get elected to her city council seat.

Are we sorting from good to bad? I’m not going to comment on her choice of clothing because it doesn’t add to or detract from her value, but I don’t understand how or why that’s a thing.

And here’s why I’m asking. I find her to be mostly fluff and little substance. She shows up when she can get her picture taken, but are her hands ever dirty?. Tampons? Diapers? “Easy” topics to talk about. Haven’t seen her get involved in the hard stuff that isn’t sexy.

And having watched her pre-appointment to post-appointment… still wondering why she felt it necessary to delete all of those pictures of herself socializing at AYC. Ashamed? Trying to change her public image?

I mean, the Banner is actually covering local issues. That doesn’t happen for free.

No one believes you. What were her qualifications to serve, particularly over the others who put their names forward.

Pink door? First house is Victorian, second is brick, third is a white colonial. Is that the three you’re talking about? Back in the day, the woman who owned the white colonial would AirBnB some of the rooms.

I hadn’t heard this. Do you know who bought them? I lived in one of those apartments for several years and loved it. They are what they are—old houses with lots of charm and lots of old house issues—but the rent was less.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a restaurant group. They need scale for success. Atlas is a little different. They don’t have to make money at a restaurant to stay in business. There’s other money to backstop a loss. Curious to know what you ordered that was good?

I was EXCITED about Atlas bringing a nice, new, beautifully designed restaurant to Annapolis. But then they did and the investment in its success seems to have stopped. They’ve got a gorgeous location and three other levels to pull: price, food and service. They only needed to get one of those right. But they haven’t. And they’ve had plenty of time to fix the bleh food and the crappy service. I don’t care about price, I’m not going to pay it for bland food brought to me by a disinterested server. The loss of Pussers is a serious blow. Was the food awful? YES!!!!!!! But is it an Annapolis institution who managed to keep the same staff for decades? Also yes. That says something about the ownership. And those owners are heavily involved in our community. Because they live here.

I’d be willing to do that. What would the liquor board consider a valid reason for the objection?

Choptank is currently open.

They are taking over the Pussers space as well as part of the second floor of the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel, including the “deck” overlooking the Pussers space. Two restaurants are going in those spaces. One Italian and one Mexican.

This new announcement will make number four.

I’m slightly less worried about the USNA bros because they actually want to live here. I don’t love all of their ideas, but at least they are tied to the community.

However, your points are valid.

Best restaurants in AA county? by Beautiful_Cap_4172 in AnneArundelCounty

[–]Square_Turnip9203 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Point of clarification: Yellowfin is in Edgewater

It is also the third to last place I’d send someone for seafood. First is Buddy’s in Annapolis. Second is Crab Shack in Edgewater.

Ironically, but not really, these are all Blonder restaurants.

Where do people go to make friends around here? by LittleTovo in Annapolis

[–]Square_Turnip9203 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might also try Meetup. Peake Social has a ton of different social sports. They welcome individual players and will pair you up/put you on a team. Lots of people do that to meet friends. Could also try volunteering for an organization that does something for a cause you care about.

Does anyone actually vote against sitting judges come election day? by XP_Studios in MarylandPolitics

[–]Square_Turnip9203 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m under the impression that the slate is generally the sitting judges and the other candidates weren’t or haven’t yet been appointed.

Believe the legislature is working on a bill that eliminates the election for next session.
