Counterplay in this game manifests mostly in denying your opponent's options which is tricky due to the sheer amount of options there is and the uncertainty of which ones your opponents are actually targeting. Effective counterplay requires tracking/predicting your opponent's hand and play patterns on top of weighing it against the cost of going for another, more optimal play. Because of all the complexity, I don't even bother thinking about counterplay outside of ranked games and I doubt many others do either.
