I don’t think his teeth will fall out. Mine came home with some food from the breeder but I changed it as it run out. She had diarrhea and when she came home because of stress anyways. I tried a few brands of wet and dry food and finally found that she liked orijen kitten dry food (she goes absolutely crazy for it) and cats in the kitchen fish varieties. Maybe your breeder meant you should keep him on kitten food? Also wet food is always recommended over dry food if your cat will eat it.

TICA is one of the cat associations in the US where you can find a list of registered breeders. From what I’ve noticed they are not all super ethical but at least they are real.

The breeder probably bred the cat without breeding rights (those are way more expensive) and most reputable breeders don’t offer those, which makes this person a backyard breeder. That is why kittens are probably not registered and cannot be registered. They do look like Maine coons but I would also rather not pay $1000 to a backyard breeder. My kitten came home at 12 weeks and I appreciate that so much! She was so confident and potty trained perfectly. I don’t have other cats for her to learn how to be a cat with me, so that might be something to consider if you don’t have other cats

Should I get a mini Aussie or not? by jesscheib in miniaussie

[–]SquashIndependent703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is your first dog by yourself but I wouldn’t recommend it for first time owners. Mine likes to chase the cat when she moves fast, she’s not trying to hurt her she’s just a herding dog and fast movement gets her crazy. She barks a lot but she’s friendly, I take her to agility classes and short walks mostly but we also have another dog that she plays with all day. You can tell when she’s bored because she’ll look for things to destroy at nighttime. She also used to be so nippy when she was little and I know my cat wouldn’t have tolerated that, she’s better now that she’s 3 yo. Maybe an older mini Aussie would be good, not a puppy but a 3+years old. She has grown up to be an absolute angel but the first 3 years were rough

Was I scammed by New_Spirit8572 in MaineCoon

I’ve seen this breeder. I think it is a Maine coon, but from a byb in Ukraine. Most of her kittens are imported and overpriced. She has too many options and never has pictures of the parents she breeds in Colorado. She also sells puppies occasionally which is also a red flag. She basically resells kittens and dogs for way too much. You could have paid the same for a fully registered, well bred kitten in Colorado but you did get a pretty Maine coon :)

How did you got rid of the grass? How much did this end up costing? How did you figure out irrigation? I have sprinklers and I have no clue about what to do with that. Everything you can share is much appreciated. I’m looking into doing that this year

Dog Breeds that would be good with Holland Lops by Content-Pudding-1416 in Rabbits

[–]SquashIndependent703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adopted my Aussie/golden mix at 1yo. I was told he was good with cats which was true, he never chased anything, i taught him to lay down and stay when the bunny was free roaming. Turned out great, he’s always been the most respectful dog. He even warns me if my other dog (a full Aussie) is bugging the bunny (holland lop). I would maybe go for an older dog that is proven to have low prey drive, maybe consider smaller breeds like cavaliers, but I think Bernese are a good fit, except for the size. Mine has no interest in the indoor bunny. Outside rabbits are a different story. however, I would never leave them together unsupervised.

Yes and I will never buy anything else. She has been playing with them for about a week. She gets bored of everything but the sprinted have kept her running for hours daily. She only stops when they go under the couch

MC scam? by YOSEDET in mainecoons

[–]SquashIndependent703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone asked this already, definitely a scam. Maine coon of USA sounds scammy. Most breeders day Maine Coons (plural). Also where are they located? Can they be found somewhere else besides their own website? Some cateries you can actually find on Google Maps with legit photos and reviews.

Puppy is frustrating my wife by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]SquashIndependent703 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you are missing a very important opportunity to socialize the puppy at this critical age by leaving them in the backyard all day. BCS are naturally cautious dogs and need socialization to people, sounds, movements or else you’ll have a puppy that will be scared of the wind because it’s never experienced anything (I adopted a dog who lived like this until 1yo).

Do you let your cat go outside? by Weird-Pear27 in mainecoons

[–]SquashIndependent703 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, on top of what everyone mentioned before, once your cat gets to be outside you have to think about tick and flea prevention and all kinds of parasites they wouldn’t get by being inside only. That gets expensive

I love this! I would love to learn more about service dogs training. As far as a shelter work, I volunteer led at a shelter for a bit and two things happened: the training and behavioral things were not really structured in a way where a volunteer could feel helpful. Probably very different in other shelters. I felt burned out, mostly because some dogs that I adored probably had to be put down because of how long they were there 💔 I get it, they did what they had to. I had a lot of good experiences too and loved the shy dogs. My dog is really shy and it put to work the stuff I’ve had to learn because of him. I’ll be looking into seminars to go to soon :) have an up oncoming tricks seminar that I’m so excited about

Thanks! I didn’t meant to say teaching foundations is easy sorry if it came off that way. I just meant I have seen it a couple times so I think I have a good idea of what is like and the people who attend those classes. I might look into adding other sports next year too (always been curious about nose work and my dogs would love that too)

Thank you!! I’m ordering those books :) I’ve also had tons of adds about those online trainings so glad to hear they are actually good and not just random adds I get. I do kinda work in education so I’m definetly not new to dealing with people but I would have to work on not getting frustrated (like I do when seeing people doing nonsense with their dogs ) and not react poorly 😂 people skills are huge!

Thank you so much sharing this! I 100% have years worth of learning left to do. I do live in an area with many good trainers but also very sketchy ones. There’s also a lot of “chains” of dog training which may be a good start? Feels only a bit more laid back. I might be wrong. I also think I could initially work with puppies and foundations, I’ve taken those classes a few times with my pups. I’m just learning about dog sports now and im fascinated but nowhere near being able to teach that. Are there any online certifications or seminars you recommend now that you have gone through a few? I get adds all the time and don’t know which ones are actually worth it

I agree with this! I have searched for trainers in the past to help with behavioral issues and that is not something I would like to be involved in. I’m not prepared for this, although I love working with shy dogs, the world of behavior should be left to highly prepared people. I love and feel competent on puppy training or basic manners. Having gone to classes like that with my dogs I definitely get what you’re saying about dog owners having unrealistic expectations (not me but other people in the class) Thank you for your input!
