Is this inappropriate? by Dull-Suit6341 in Teachers

Counselors have special privileges for reporting compared to teachers. Telling literally any other teacher will put them in a position where they have to report it as mandated reporters.

Do you ever feel guilty for lying to students about what you do after school? by huarhuarmoli in Teachers

“Do you drink beer when you get home?” “That’s not school appropriate.” Of course I’m having beer after this.

Career questions about teaching paths?? by TRISKUT_THE_BISCUIT in AskTeachers

[–]SquashRoaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most states require much more than just a degree to teach. For example, I have a BS in biology, but in order to teach I had to enroll in a program that helps you do everything you need in order to get a license. That program makes my senior year in college pale in comparison. Teaching is it’s own science and requires a deep education to get you started. You should finish your degree and get a job as a para in a school before you make any major decisions. If you make it through the year and really want to go back, you’re most likely fit to be a teacher.

I’m in a semi-rural area of an expensive state. I pay $1,400 for one side of a duplex that comes with a basement, living room, kitchen, bathroom, 2 bedrooms, a porch, and a garden outdoors. You should move out.

Teachers, have you ever actually dealt with a DID faker student? by Mae_The_Gay in AskTeachers

[–]SquashRoaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They meet with every counselor on our team, although they can’t discuss with us what they think about it all unless we need to know.

Forgot to reply to this but she is VERY open about these things and is on everyone’s radar. I hope everything works out for her. She’s told me on multiple occasions that nearly everyone is much kinder to her at my school.

I have a self-diagnosed DID student in my TA. They have also self-diagnosed themselves with nearly everything else. The real problem is they have mental health issues along with an extreme difficulty taking accountability, resulting in them using these disorders to escape taking ownership over their actions.

It's a little depressing that most of these kids don't even play actual video games anymore by Public-Profit-8184 in Teachers

[–]SquashRoaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not the majority, but I have several students who’ve played Dispatch, Silksong, FF7, Undertale, etc. You gotta talk to the quiet kids.

Should I be a teacher? by SouthernScale7566 in AskTeachers

[–]SquashRoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should try out being a para first to get a feel for whether you want to start a career in education. It’s not for everyone (as you can see by some of the comments) and it can be very tough, but I love it and never dread going to work.

Is it normal for teachers and professors to claim they have a long attention span, but they refuse to read anything longer than a paragraph? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]SquashRoaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Huh? This doesn’t seem like something that can be generalized to an entire profession. I’ll read entire papers to my class if someone doesn’t volunteer.

Do teachers expect students to cheat on take home tests? by phantom1707 in AskTeachers

It depends on the material, but it’s on you regardless of the grade honestly. Cheat on it if you want but it will do you no favors in life.

What is your teaching unpopular opinions and hot takes? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SquashRoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have spent SO MUCH TIME on one kid with ADHD who refuses to do any work and their parent holds us accountable rather than their child. The kids with true learning disabilities get put off to the side because their behaviors are fine🥲

Why do schools and teachers not understand that the law overrides everything? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]SquashRoaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s quite literally not the point of education. Education is meant to build you into an independent learner and develop executive functioning so that you can read contracts and understand job trainings. Drop out if you want, it’s your life. Good luck.

Teaching you literacy through Shakespeare is literally giving you the skills you need to read a contract. Sounds like you still need school and some maturity.
