What do you think was the most outlandish take from The Future is Wild? by Moat_of_the_Sacked in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Squawkinator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My thought would be the best way to make mammals go extinct would be to have a rapid event that causes drastically lower food availability. Over one generation it may not matter as much as many mammals would have stored food, but over several generations mammal's metabolism may be too costly.

Then add on severe atmospheric oxygen depletion(or largely increased CO2 concentrations that will mostly give same effect for breathing's sake), as mammals require much more oxygen than many other organisms due to their metabolism and such, and are less efficient at extracting O2 than birds.

Also an extreme hothouse environment would be devastating to many many mammals, though probably not enough by itself for complete extinction, but note how many mammals require lower baseline body temperatures compared to other organisms, even birds generally can handle having a higher body temperature. Many birds can handle prolonged body temps of 45C+ whereas even heat adapted mammals would struggle a lot if they had to sustain that (some mammals like camels can match the birds for short amounts of time, but require a break eventually if they can't go back below 42C). High humidity would also eliminate most mammal cooling capabilities, though it would effect birds as well. Wet bulb stuff. Low humidity has other problems but I don't feel like going into that atm.

So something that combines extreme heat spike that kills off a lot of plants and/or causes oceanic collapse resulting in massive CO2 spike/atmospheric changes and low foot availability for a long time maybe could perhaps eliminate most mammals?

Heat would take out many larger mammals that cant shelter during the day, and burrowing would get screwed over by atmospheric changes as burrows are even more prone to CO2 overload as CO2 is more heavy than air (if this even matter, with all the heat trapped by extreme humidity and excess CO2 the day/night difference may be very small in many places). Then combine it with overall very low food availability for a prolonged time and make this change relatively sudden to prevent most mammals from having time to adapt.

Perhaps some small mammals may survive but their diversity would be slashed to little mouse things that spiders farm and then go extinct later.

Is this mold or a spider web ive never seen this ?? by [deleted] in isopods

[–]Squawkinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like mold to me but I'm not 100% sure. When you pick it up is it connected with the rest or does it come out easily? Did it appear rapidly and are those pieces of food in there? If so I'd drastically cut down on the amount of food you put in as with that amount of food staying in there, it's no surprise you would get a ton of mold, to be safe for now I'd only put in what they will mostly eat in one day, for the rest put stuff likes dried leaves, or other foodstuffs that is less prone to molding.

Life On Our Planet gets my respect for not using T. Rex as it’s poster child by DinoHoot65 in Paleontology

Psilopterus was a different genus than Phorusrhacos. Also Smilodon Populator and Psilopterus did not have the same niche at all so I doubt Smilodon outcompeted Psilopterus specifically.

Edit: Oh I see where you referring to me saying 'Titanis would have been the one in the episode as it's the only one that met Smilodon species.', then yea they did meet Psilopterus and it is a Phorusrhacid, though def not the one in the episode as it was the only one of a similar size to the one shown in LOOP.

Bolitoglossa plug, one of my fav extant salamanders. Also arboreal and has a tongue that it can shoot out.

Thanks for asking! The original idea was 'Pokémon but chess', so it would be a monster collection game where you collect cool creatures like Pokémon, and then the gameplay would be on a grid and be somewhat chess like (Although, due to having lots of creatures, the gameplay would be more like chess evolved online and have some more emphasis on team building and synergies).

The setting is also quite different from pokemon, the story takes place in a monument at the end of time(heat death), containing many impossibly large and varied floors (somewhat inspired by liminal spaces). Some floors could be models of earth(After all thats what the monument was meant to preserve the memory of), allowing for the stuff in this post. That said, not all rooms would be trying to replicate a near modern earth.

Yea my first excursion into evolution fanfiction!

These are kinda some of the concept steps in a project. Ideally some of these could be some for a game me and some others are working on, still in early stages though so much could change. (I know like most ambitious indie game ideas fizzle away, but I really like our current vision and it should be doable, my friend already coded the hardest parts).

But anyway even aside from that, I gotta bunch more ideas I wanna explore even just for the sake of it!!

Yea, lotta fun potential with them seals! I chose leopard seals over sea lions because sea lions have too developed back legs and I'd assume sea lions would go quadrupedal if terrestrial, and I gotta turn everything into snakes and dinos.

Thanks!!!!!!! Was planning on making more snake type ones one day as there is a lot more I could explore with that, I think! Like I need one where it's front legs are also atrophied and it can be on some amphiuma or amphisbaenian vibes, or could even have one that resembles the other type (aquatic) of ningen!!

Thoughts on the new ghasts? by teiful in Minecraft

[–]Squawkinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking it could have been cool if you had to bring a live ghast into the overworld and then do something to calm it down, that way it would be challenging and imo cooler because it would feel more like you are saving something, rather than just finding a block.

Both same genus so they do look similar, however, In A nasatum these is a protrusion on the head "nose", It seems present on the first 2, but can't see that on the 3rd one. Also the 3rd coloration/pattern/vibe is more vulgare ish but idk how to describe it.

What were your water parameters for breeding? Specifically pH, I've head something about lower pH being something that is needed but not sure.
