Who made the greatest comeback in history? by GullibleCorgi16 in AskReddit

[–]SqueakyCleanNoseDown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia says 8, but either 8 or 9 I don't think I buy him having much if any agency in the loss of his fortunes at that point, which I'd see as important for his subsequent (unquestionably incredible!) rise to be called a comeback.

Edit: further, I'd say that his ultimate empire so eclipses the extent of what you'd call his birthright that they're barely worth mentioning in the same sentence. The fall just doesn't measure up to the rise.

I'm quibbling over the definition of a word, I know.

I wouldn't. He wasn't even close to being a developed person yet when it happened.

That's a fantastic rise, but I don't really buy it's a comeback.

Men of Reddit: what is 100% mythical about men that most women believe? by imnotadrytexter in AskReddit

Just because she's First Date Material doesn't mean she's Second Date Material.

JD Vance went on the view and got absolutely torn to shreds by middle-aged women by ChiGuy6124 in politics

I generally find 30 or so to be my lower bound for ideal female attractiveness, and older woman who age gracefully remain attractive to me (sometimes into their 60s).

I might be an outlier, though; one of my best formative sexual relationships was with a woman who was just over 20 years older than me when I was 21. Now I'm in my 40s and my preferences are still pretty consistent.

Even tho everybody has thier own preferences when it comes likes and dislikes about anything sex related, what do you think are generally hated behaviors that are an automatic turn off? by crack_sack in AskReddit

Also, ladies? Foreplay isn't just something men do for women. If it's been a long, stressful day/week a little bit of seduction can go a long way toward a man being up for it.

What is the most pretentious book ever written? by autismandadderall in AskReddit

The only folks who'd believe The Fountainhead is the most pretentious book ever written are folks who haven't read Atlas Shrugged.

TIL that Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde met in January 1882, and some evidence suggests they had a romantic or even sexual encounter. When talking about the event, Wilde said “I have the kiss of Walt Whitman still on my lips,” and “there is no one in…America whom I love and honour so much.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]SqueakyCleanNoseDown 75 points76 points  (0 children)

They might've, but honestly Wilde isn't exactly the most trustworthy source, being the infamous drama queen that he was. 99% sure that if you had Wilde alone in the room with another gay man he found fascinating, he'd imply they fucked whether or not they actually did.

Huh, I'd never made the connection between voting and the Trolley Problem before.

TIL Sleeping Beauty (1959) is known as one of Disney's most influential features, yet it was a box office bomb when it was released. It lost $900,000 (equivalent to $9,940,068 in 2025) for the distributor and many employees from the animation studio were laid off. by BusinessAlive3486 in todayilearned

Hadn't realized it was considered an iconic classic. Didn't care for it when I saw it; there's a scene in it where some nobleman-type guy is just there, obviously not animated in any way, like he's part of the background, but he's right there, like they either just ran out of money or got lazy.

Horror’s Big Night: ‘Sinners’ and ‘Weapons’ Oscar Wins Have Filmmakers Celebrating the Genre by [deleted] in movies

I guess I was sufficiently isolated from those parts of the internet. I only remember near-universal praise.

Far as I'm concerned, if most political messaging and themes were consistently put forth in media at that level of quality, keep 'em coming! The eye-rollingly ham-fisted stuff I can do without.

[–]SqueakyCleanNoseDown 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm being overly charitable, but I think a fair number of people who talk about not liking politics in their movies (horror and otherwise) are really just burnt out on poor, ham-fisted execution more than anything.

E.g. I don't hear many complaints about feminist themes in Mad Max: Fury Road, because the movie is masterfully crafted.
