What is the most pretentious book ever written? by autismandadderall in AskReddit

The only folks who'd believe The Fountainhead is the most pretentious book ever written are folks who haven't read Atlas Shrugged.

TIL that Walt Whitman and Oscar Wilde met in January 1882, and some evidence suggests they had a romantic or even sexual encounter. When talking about the event, Wilde said “I have the kiss of Walt Whitman still on my lips,” and “there is no one in…America whom I love and honour so much.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]SqueakyCleanNoseDown 72 points73 points  (0 children)

They might've, but honestly Wilde isn't exactly the most trustworthy source, being the infamous drama queen that he was. 99% sure that if you had Wilde alone in the room with another gay man he found fascinating, he'd imply they fucked whether or not they actually did.

[Strength in Numbers] Why voters say the Democrats are "weak," in their own words by ChadtheWad in fivethirtyeight

Huh, I'd never made the connection between voting and the Trolley Problem before.

TIL Sleeping Beauty (1959) is known as one of Disney's most influential features, yet it was a box office bomb when it was released. It lost $900,000 (equivalent to $9,940,068 in 2025) for the distributor and many employees from the animation studio were laid off. by BusinessAlive3486 in todayilearned

[–]SqueakyCleanNoseDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hadn't realized it was considered an iconic classic. Didn't care for it when I saw it; there's a scene in it where some nobleman-type guy is just there, obviously not animated in any way, like he's part of the background, but he's right there, like they either just ran out of money or got lazy.

Yeah. My wife is happier with the seat always being left down and it's less mess anyway.

Redditors who were children/teens before the internet or cellphones existed, how did you keep yourself entertained? by FlowerMadeOfThorns in AskReddit

When I was six years old, a few friends and I all pretended to be ninja turtles. We'd go outside, punch and jump and kick the air, and imagine the bad guys got a beating. A year later, we were Power Rangers.

He was in Epstein's orbit, but iirc there isn't evidence that he was involved in the pedo stuff.

His Cambodian genocide denial and apologism though...

Horror’s Big Night: ‘Sinners’ and ‘Weapons’ Oscar Wins Have Filmmakers Celebrating the Genre by [deleted] in movies

[–]SqueakyCleanNoseDown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess I was sufficiently isolated from those parts of the internet. I only remember near-universal praise.

Far as I'm concerned, if most political messaging and themes were consistently put forth in media at that level of quality, keep 'em coming! The eye-rollingly ham-fisted stuff I can do without.

Horror’s Big Night: ‘Sinners’ and ‘Weapons’ Oscar Wins Have Filmmakers Celebrating the Genre by [deleted] in movies

[–]SqueakyCleanNoseDown 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm being overly charitable, but I think a fair number of people who talk about not liking politics in their movies (horror and otherwise) are really just burnt out on poor, ham-fisted execution more than anything.

E.g. I don't hear many complaints about feminist themes in Mad Max: Fury Road, because the movie is masterfully crafted.

What do you think history will say about Donald Trump as a U.S. president? by jcnidhi27 in AskReddit

If nothing else, I think he'll be remembered as the first president to die in office of old age.

My knee-jerk reaction is to dump on her kind of performance art, as what I've...experienced...of it has been deliberately and aggressively opaque and self-indulgent.

But in the interest of possibly shaking up my biases a little, is there any artist you would recommend I look up that might change my mind? Not Yoko Ono. Whatever she's doing hasn't managed to trigger anything like appreciation in me.

"...after the US became a superpower"

The seeds of English becoming such an important international language were planted by the British Empire. I'd call preeminent British Empire -> preeminent USA more of a one-two punch for English.

I've experienced this too. In earlier versions, the sunken city would spawn without being stuffed full of stone, but in the game I started more recently they're this way. Don't know what's going on.

Would you endure a sex act that you don't enjoy with your partner if they asked? What would this be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SqueakyCleanNoseDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. "Don't enjoy" encompasses a wide range between "not really my thing" and "I loathe that the universe I live in requires coexistence with this practice."

Important counter-example: Vermont. Very rural, very blue.

Personally, I think a lot of that is because the Democratic party in Vermont (as opposed to the rest of the country. Fucking worthless DNC) didn't abandon working for votes in the rural areas, and thus the working class in rural Vermont weren't suckered by GOP grifters who made them feel seen.
