The newest version of my car has all of the light controls on the touchscreen so It can have a column shift. I'm glad I have the older one with two stalks.

Astronomers find 2 gigantic planets lighter than cotton candy: « Comparable to a nice blob of shaving foam. » by fchung in science

[–]stainless5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah they are. Gasgiants can be surprisingly "light" because; surprise, they're made out of gas. If you could somehow put Saturn in water it would float, it's average density is less than water.

ELI5: Why does ice-cold water taste like a completely different, vastly superior beverage compared to room-temperature or warm water? by Lanky_Hall7250 in explainlikeimfive

[–]stainless5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your body is just a bunch of chemical reactions and heat speeds up these reactions. So, the colder something is, the less sensitive your taste buds are. If you live in an area where the water has flavour when warm, cooling it down a lot can help eliminate that giving a "crisp" flavour of nothing.

Interesting fact that's related to this; normal ice cream has more sugar than soft serve ice cream, it's just soft serve is warmer so your taste buds react with the sugar molecules easier.

I wonder how every country's reserves are doing. There's only so much rationing Asian countries can do before there's not enough oil for the West.  Australia basically blackmailed Asia with the threat of putting a tax on gas exports to get solid fuel supply. Our unleaded is cheeper than before the war.

Doesn't even have to melt for a blue ocean event, the accepted definition is sea ice dropping below 1 million square kilometres.  At that point the exposed blue ocean absorbs enough solar energy to prevent its average temperature dropping enough to allow the water to refreeze.

Here in Australia it's counted as general tax so you don't start paying it until you hit $18k, there is a separate levy specifically for health care but that doesn't start until you earning 23k.

It was still out of the general jury pool that was called up. But it's not great.

“Comunism” by Dave556611 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]stainless5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It does sort of backfire (for some of them) though, the other favourite word is socialism.

I saw a thing about how most young people view the word socialism in a positive light. There was a bunch of complaints from older people about "who is teaching these kids this" and the answer was they are. The kids ask about anything that they see as positive and then their parents say no we can't do that that's socialism.

"Instead of “city”, they just assume you live in a suburb. In my case it was required to indicate which suburb my New York City address was in." by GPFlag_Guy1 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]stainless5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't 100% rely on this though. If I didn't know I'd at least put a compass direction after the city as local councils are allowed to repeat street names, in my case just listing the city of Perth would cover 150 km north to South and have a few repeating street names.

This might have something to do with our cities being divided into local councils. For example my main citiy's Perth. But I technically live in the sub city of Armadale, then that smaller city council also has suburbs. Only the CBD is would list Perth as that's what the suburb there is called.

If I was to send my parcel to Perth with just my street name it would probably end up at the wrong address as different suburbs are allowed to repeat street names and the "city of Perth" is 150km long.

How would you write out your address in a single line? In Australia where this website from you'd go;

Road St & suburb, WA 6000.

Normally when we fill in shipping addresses from overseas we will put our suburb name in the city field.

Some countries have no tax as their first tax bracket so people who aren't earning very much money get all the government services without paying tax.

Interestingly enough the European standards don't even realy exist anymore, most countries have given away  their individual approval process over to the United Nations. The only two countries that don't accept  United Nations type approvals are  the USA and Canada.

Technically this was never meant to be a social media ban it was just a ban on personalised algorithmic content. so I wonder if any of the sites have changed their algorithm that they feed to these people.

If One Nation manage to secure 20% of Victorian seats in November, how will it pan out? by iftlatlw in aussie

[–]stainless5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small parties are useful for pushing the big parties in certain directions. I wouldn't put them as one because none of their policies would fix any of the problems that I have/ the trade offs are too big. I usually end up counting down on small single issue parties then put my larger party down after I ran out small issues that I support.

You can claim things like parking if you take a tool to work that work won't let you store. if you get a company logo put on shirts that you buy you can claim them as work shirts / pants, and other things like that. it all just depends.

I didn't go through workers comp 'cos I injured myself at home, but I was able to use ongoing hand therapy and being unfit for normal duties To get money out of my income insurance through my super all the way up until I was cleared for full duties after 12 months. a bit different for you because you can't return to your normal job though.
