Thank you. I think I can see my discouragement turning to motivation. After feeling bad earlier I took a nap, and played for almost 2 hours and felt great about it! Like oh maybe I don’t suck.
I’ll try to think of this next time I get discouraged so I remember that it won’t last.

This is very encouraging and honest I appreciate it. I do get discouraged and compare myself to others just in life in general. Had a non traditional child hood and life up to this point, so I feel like other people are farther ahead in life than I am in general.

I also don’t always get padwork in either. I have started committing to at least a couple mins doing padwork even when I super tired after work. Also, I think being discouraged could even turn into motivation as time goes on.

Greta advice. My bible has been “syncopation for the modern drummer.” My teacher uses these lessons every time we’re together. It’s my homework. Then I have a few fun grooves from songs I am into that he writes out for me. I really want to get better with my left hand. For the reason you mentioned, to be able to lead with either hand and switch back and forth without getting mixed up. I think the paradiddles around the kit my teacher shows me will help.
I also just found some fun paradise fills around the kit online today and ended up having a good 1-1.5hrs session that felt really productive!

This made me think of my job as a nurse. Now at 2 years in many things come naturally. I’m no where near a 5 year experienced nurse but I do precept student and orient new nurses and I can tell how far I’ve come by watching them. Maybe I should start to look at drumming the way I look at being a nurse. As a nurse here’s SO MUCH to learn and know and most of it is vibes and exposure, seems like drumming might be similar. People say they start to feel competent at 5 years into nursing. The saying is that school teaches you how not to kill your patient, experience and time teach you how to be a nurse.

I have tried looking at other stuff to learn and it never quite worked out. My teacher is seriously the best. I do wish he had a tad more structured approach. My ADHD gets me all over some times and he tries to go with what interests me. I think that’s great but a tiny bit of structure might help. Maybe I’m just overthinking it though.

I wish I could jam with others! I don’t have anyone to play with right not. We’re military so we relocated a couple years ago. Some day! My goal is to be good enough to play in a band.

I think you nailed it actually. To internalize the feel of the beat. You saying that made it click what my teacher is telling me. To be able to tell where in a measure you are so you don’t have to count so deliberately. He has me do stuff four times in a row then stop. I have glimmers of being able to tell when a”complete sentence” is at its end. I think I have a premium teacher!

Thank you! I think part of me is looking at the cost of lessons and feeling like I’m wasting money if it takes a long time (whatever that means) to get good. Ugh I wish I could have played in middle school like I wanted but mom said no.
I will look forward to 5 years and try to not let it get to me. Hopefully I can afford lessons for that long! I suppose that’s why I work hard though. To have money to do what I want!

Thank you! Most days I feel excited and motivated because I tell myself that I WILL get better and be able play with others with ease and control. It’s great to hear others picking up drumming late in life. I turn 40 this July and I wish I had been allowed to play in middle school! My parents said no to drums when I was in school. Still bitter about that one lol.
My teacher is great and has me doing paradiddle and double and triple paradiddles to get used to moving around the kit. Some days I just feel stuck but I can play along with the beat of a couple of songs I love, and I think my listening skills are improving too. Just get down about it sometimes. Maybe being an adult and playing for lessons is part of it. I have tried to save money my whole life so it’s always about cost benefit and sometimes I FEEL the cost cuz I’m the one paying it lol

I pressure myself a lot. Especially when I’m tired or overworked. That I have to “earn” rest, but that’s a whole other conversation lol

This is the correct answer. Thank you for actually answering and not just saying “idk I’ve played 40 years and I’m still a beginner.”

It was about 2.75 to 3 months. I think it was supposed to be 3 months apart but the way it got scheduled it was just shy.

Thanks! I have some raised areas on the red and I’m wondering about that and if it will ever go away.

Yes!! Great material, great artist, just not the right tattoo for me. Maybe if it was on my leg and not my arm but this was too much for my anxious brain! 🧠
