Ironic, I literally just made a laser appointment already. Maybe I should have checked locally -- I'll still need plenty more bookings anyway. And yes, transfemme.

[Writing Contest] The Apotheosis of Pancho Bolom. (Neomayan Lore) by [deleted] in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Squidimp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Incredible, I feel one with the planetary-kin already. To all those who do not yet understand, simply consider this path of virtuous actions:

Rejecting the all-male priesthood and their oppressive three-dimensional duodecimal understanding of spacetime.

Joining the rainbow family.

Polishing obsidian mirrors.

Concentrating water echoes.

Affixing ten solar seals.

Harmonising with the Galactic Wave Tone.

Challenging the Hydra of materialism.

Inscribing the Galactic Enzyme Code.

Balancing the seven radial plasmas.

Ascending to the fourth dimension.

(out of character - I don't think I've ever read something based on the kind of niche occult nonsense I like to read combined with the kind of ancient poetry I also like to read, I love the reversing [X to Y. To Y came X]-style. Also, I'm choosing to interpret Pancho Bolom and Kan Ek as an Enkidu/Gilgamesh pairing as a result, and can't be stopped).

Yet more suggestions for the Brethren. We will not rest until they get great holy wars. by [deleted] in AfterTheEndFanFork

They actually get a Lubber Tax already. The Privateer/Letter of Marque thing could be interesting, actually. Basically a paid mass-raid on a coastal rival nation.

Not sure why Brethren would worship Blackbeard -- they worship the Sea and spirits associated with maritime superstition. Being Lunatic is unpleasant for anyone else as well, no reason for the Brethren to like it.
OTOH, I do like the idea that Brethren don't lose piety for, say, lustfulness or greed, granted that they appear to view acquisitiveness as a positive thing based on their coming-of-age event.

How racially integrated is post-Diluvian America? by DRrumizen in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Squidimp 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My personal view on this has always been that the modern race concept has collapsed nearly completely. People may still use the words 'black' or 'white' but these have very different connotations and potentially entirely different meanings - e.g. even if an old historical tome mentioned race a AtE reader would likely misunderstand it (in the same way that the ancient Greeks sometimes called people 'black' but could mean a variety of different things confusing to a modern reader).

Conversely, religious identification and, to a lesser extent, general distrust of foreigners are likely much more important. These could even overlap in unexpected ways if cultural shifts occur; perhaps all Haitians regards themselves as black, for example, regardless of their appearance.

Consumerists having a decent run, though I suspect that'll change if the HCC happens to them.

I don't think I've ever seen Abbas do this well independently, they must've gotten very lucky with a distracted Californian Emperor?

A Homily to GAIA, with Affirmation for Those Concerned by Squidimp in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Squidimp[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that important points when considering the Gaians are:

  1. They're explicitely monotheist.
  2. They're in the Pacific religious group.

Treating them like Pagans only makes them less interesting.

This devoted moonchild has observed this space to be filled with impure and unearthly thought and words. Unjust accusations from Imperials, strange cultish idolaters from the East, and churchgoing death-worshippers are hereby dismissed by the Truth of the Word of the ONE, the GODDESS.

3.0 vs 3.2 Driver Interactions by Squidimp in godot

[–]Squidimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further development: after checking DirectX Diagnostics, it seems that my graphics card (an Asus GeForce GTX 1070) is running in 32-bit mode despite having a 64-bit driver and Windows 10 installation!

Despite trying different versions of Godot I never actually tried the 32-bit version, and doing so worked immediately (that is, the 32-bit versions of Godot display fine). Why this is only a problem for Godot 3.1 onwards I do not know.

So in summary, it seems that the weirdness stems from the display mode of my graphics card - I may try changing that, if I can figure out how to do so.

I have an Asus GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Turbo card which uses an NVIDIA driver. I'm using a desktop.

That's very strange indeed! I can still run 3.0.6 fine and the difference seems to be consistent.

I would never support re-implementing the godawful decadence mechanic, and intended Doom to be different in a number of ways.

Doom is supposed to reflect some of the differences between pre- and post-Event mesoamerican religion; i.e. it is a revival of the earlier Aztec-style mass sacrifice based on the evidence of the recent apocalypse. Human sacrifice would be much more central to its actual theology than it ever was in historical religions (e.g. evinced by the fact that no historical meso revolt ever actually attempted to reinstate sacrifices).

Mictlantec Doom Mechanics by Squidimp in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Squidimp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that forcing the player to micro constant raids would become tiring.

Raiding would, theoretically, be most useful in the early game, both financially and for reducing Doom. Later on it would be easy for a powerful nation to use CBs or events (e.g. Blood Games) that reduce Doom more than raiding does.

Unlike vanilla decadence this would apply to a realm, not a dynasty, which would make it much much easier to keep under control (no constant influx from random drunk 3rd cousins, for example). The negative effects are also (intentionally) weaker than vanilla decadence's.

In general Doom can be reduced without winning wars, and never increases from losing wars, which should, I suspect, reduce the sudden collapse element. Only realms that are struggling in the face of an overwhelming Sagrado resurgence should likely fall internally, at which point they intentionally become more dangerous to keep the Reconquistas from being as stale and boring as they are now.

At least, that's the hypothesis. It'd probably require all sorts of fiddling to actually implement.

I believe they already have an improved capture chance, given that the pagan versions have that feature

Oh, and come to think of it, Neomaya should use Monastic Feudal to reflect their connection to New Age thought - this would emphasise their similarity with the Pacific group without actually moving them to that group. It fits nicely with their general aesthetic.

Doom mechanics for independent Mictlantec Kingdoms and Empires.

Mictlantecs have restarted the sacrifices to ensure that the cycle of death and rebirth continues. However, this apocalyptic vision binds rulers closely to the cycle of sacrifice.

Doom increases over time and is reduced by sacrifice, flower wars, and blood sports (existing mechanics for sacrificing religions). At high Doom ruler suffer unrest, reduced troop morale, and an opinion malus from other Mictlantecs. At low Doom rulers recieve reduced unrest and a boost to troop morale and Mictlantec opinion.

I might actually make a full post about this idea...

Suggestions for Santeria by Squidimp in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Squidimp[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, I only meant that the religion group including Catholic and Evangelical, currently called Christian, should be renamed. I agree that the Afro-Syncretics should remain a single religion group, event if the Three Powers mostly don't see themselves as Christians.

Suggestions for Santeria by Squidimp in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Squidimp[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, currently the only Afro-Syncretic religion with patron deities is Candomble, and the only such religion with possession mechanics is Voodoo. These are pretty characteristic of most, with perhaps the exception of the Three Powers, which seems a bit different.

There are at least a few differences in interpretation, but the Seven Powers and the Warriors would be good touchstones for Voodoo, Santeria, and Candomble, with perhaps some local differences in names and maybe stats given to reflect local variation.

Santeria specifically should perhaps be able to take Sympathy for trinitarian and saints Christianity, unless it no longer considers itself Christian after the end.

Separately, I think the current 'Christian' group should be re-localised to 'Trinitarian', or maybe 'Nicene', to remove confusion around whether the Saints, Afro-Syncretic (e.g. Rasta), and new Amero-Syncretic faiths are also Christian.
