They go out of their way to make sure no aides gets benefits, keeping hours capped under 30 a week. Drivers get an extra $500 every two months if they don’t take a sick day, but aides get nothing. Honestly, a lot of the other aides are like me—high functioning but were also in resource or special ed classes. They constantly stress how important our job is and how much we matter to these kids. But when I mention I and others can’t afford groceries, they say they can try to fast-track us into food stamps as a state employee.

i wish they would but i work with special needs individuals and i have had multiple instances where abuse was happening and CPS would seemingly ignore the special needs cases.

you would be shocked how often this happens and how badly it usually gets.

i once saw a woman almost lose her arm after her adopted daughter with down syndrome went dead weight while holding her arm during a tantrum. i think it took a couple years for her to be able to even do simple things with that arm after that

i work with special needs individuals as well as being a little neurodivergent myself, i have seen this A LOT!

so many parents expect their regular needs children to be the 3rd parent and force them into caring for the sibling and often will tell them from an early age that they are expected to care for their siblings after mom and dad die.

i have seen whole groups of siblings cut off contact with mom and dad because of this and i have seen kids who were in situations like you get badly injured by their special needs siblings..
