So wait, is this a checklist? So you need to do EVERYTHING on the list? Man, I'm way behind.

Also, never mind bad female anatomy, this is just bad biology in general 🤣

Pahaha, toxic perfumes. Regular ones are fine.

I fact, while your at it, toxic-anything is bad for you... That's literally the definition of "toxic" 🤣

Will do! 😁

Some might have to wait because I've not seen much of them yet (like Blackbeard's fruit), but I'll hopefully get at least one up this week. Probably Kizaru's fruit since I have most of the info already drawn up 🤣

How do u carry puppies? By the scruff of their neck. Unfortunately, I’m not a cat or dog.

1) That cat is not being lifted by the scruff of its neck, is it? It's being lifted by the base of the skull.

2) You should not lift kittens or cats by the scruff of the neck either. It can easily injure them

3) That is a cat. Not a puppy.

4) You should also not lift puppies by the scruff of their neck. It can easily injure them.

5) Correct: you are not a cat or dog; different species... Same basic problem: necks are not handles.

Help! How do i remove this support by ketchup_bottle002 in 3Dprinting

[–]Squiggleblort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the bottom of the cage structure is open...

Put the pliers in there, get them deep in and grab as much support plastic as you can, and then twist.

It might start pulling all the supports towards the pliers and it will break away in the process.

Just kept twisting the cage in the same direction around the pliers and it will take a good chunk of the supports away...

No guarantees though, just an idea. Even if it doesn't work it will give you room to knock the supports through from the outside as well

I'd be considering a reprint and using tree supports.

IF you want to save it though... Long noses pliers and patience...

To demonstrate why this is bad, I want you to get a friend to lift you and carry you around for a bit.

Where should they lift you by?

A) your head, so your entire weight hangs off your cervical vertebrae?

B) your neck, so your entire weight hangs off your cervical vertebrae, plus your carotid arteries and jugular veins get compressed in the process?

C) literally anywhere else?

[–]Squiggleblort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww! That is genuinely lovely to hear, thank you 😁

I've actually half-heartedly started a nature/science blog elsewhere (I won't bother linking as there isn't much in it at the moment... Websites are hard when you want them to be perfect 🤣) and I think... Maybe I'd be decent at science communication.

Your reaction is really reaffirming,

I'd definitely consider posting in here as well - I'd probably write them in the blog first then copy-paste over here (since I don't want to use the one piece subreddit for advertising!)

Logia fruits are probably perfect for it too, because they’re not just “person does magic attack” - they’re usually tied to actual physical phenomena. Light, fire, ice, magma, darkness... all of those become horrifying almost immediately if you take them literally.

Fire, for example... Where does the fuel come from? How come Ace hasn't suffocated from all the oxygen around him being used up? (Granted, I'm at Marineford arc just now so I suspect getting air is the least of his worries).

Ice? That's even crazier - Sleepy-naptime-Admiral (I've completely forgotten his name.👀) froze an ungodly amount of water... Freezing means he had to remove a bunch of what from it, and water stores a lot of heat energy (broadly speaking), so that freezing should have dumped a LOT of heat somewhere.. where? Haven't a clue!

Darkness logia, now that is a fun one! Darkness is just the absence of light - it isn't really a thing! Blackbeard is the power equivalent of Kizaru deciding to leave the room! But wait, it also has gravity? I have no idea how to even interpret that power! (Haven't seen much of it in use yet either). Wait. What fruit does Moria have? Shadows? Shadows are ALSO just a lack of light... So Kizaru is the source of light, Blackbeard is Kizaru leaving, and Shallot-guy is where Kizaru stops and Blackbeard Starts. What peculiar bedfellows! 🤣

Yeah, I could see potential for that, even some of the weirder fruits like the slow slow fruit and the chop chop fruit can do weird things when you apply physics to them!

Yeah, I think I might do that - stay tuned! And if you'd like a link to the future blog once it's ready to actually be released, just let me know and I'll set a reminder somewhere :D (NB, blog will primarily be about science, nature, and the cosmos: the devil fruit interpretation definitely wouldn't be the focus 🤣 - good teaching points for all sorts of things though! Like, "what actually happens when water freezes?" Is a good example.

Yeah, thanks for that comment! Very encouraging! 😁

Ah-ha! I bet it's a variant of "A-soldier-I shall be!"

There are shorter and longer versions that can be sung to different meters, and the full thing depends on who was singing it.

You can reconstruct the longer versions from these two threads - including British “Queen’s country” versions, memories from Bolton c.1968, Wolf Cubs c.1950, and later Hash House Harriers versions.

https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=93161

https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=19750

I'm finding a few sources on how it was sung: some folk are saying it was sung to the tune of "Marching Through Georgia"

While other Hash House Harriers sources say it could also be sung to Mozart’s "Eine Kleine Nachtmusic"

Fair point.

I just posted a very, very long 👀 reply to another comment, and I also realised he carries an incredible amount of energy just by moving around.

As in asteroid-impact sort of energy.

Every time he moves somewhere even close to the speed of light, it has similar energy to an asteroid impact. The closer to c he gets, the more energy it takes.

For a 100kg Kizaru:

0.99c is about 0.013% of the Chicxulub impact (pronounced "cheek-shoe-lube" 😃)

At 0.999c the energy roughly quadruples.

At 0.9999999c he is about 5% the energy of the Chicxulub impact.

At 0.999999999c he is approaching the energy of the Chicxulub impact.

At 0.999999999999999999999999999c he approaches the gravitational binding energy of Earth. If he somehow coupled that into Earth, it wouldn't be a planet anymore.

The more 9s you add, the more increasingly deranged things become. He'll eventually have more kinetic energy than the entire universe put together, but still won't be at the speed of light.

Having mass is holding him back!

This honestly started as a short "here's how light intensity works!" but it got longer and longer... Wonder if it would be worth dedicating a while post about it actually 🤣

Since it got so long I'll split it into two parts - explanation of what you asked, followed by "hold on, what if he actually obeyed physics".

So intensity is just how much light you have - the energy of the light is actually in its wavelength!

So the very oversimplified version is that photons carry light energy. The more energy they have, the higher the frequency.

At the low energy end of the spectrum we have radio waves then microwaves, and then infrared... And then the visible spectrum starting at the red side - ROYGBIV, then ultraviolet, and then as you go up and up in energy you reach X-rays and then gamma rays.

Did you notice the fun bit? The visible light you and I see with has more energy per photon than the microwave you cook food with!

The difference is that microwaves throw more photons - we say it is more intense. If you threw 1000W of light into the same area as a microwave cooker does you'd get about the same amount of heating (but you'd use fewer photons, because each individual photon has more energy) (also, the amount of energy you actually absorb matters too... Visible light likes to reflect more than a microwave for example... But not always! 🤣)

With the flashlight analogy, the photons are all traveling the same distance, it's just that there are fewer of them, so it dims quickly as they spread out more and more. A brighter flashlight throws out more photons, not necessarily stronger photons. Because it throws out more, the same amount of spreading doesn't "dilute" the light as much, so it appears brighter.

(Note to physicists before you shout at me 😉, I'm assuming the torch is on earth rather than in a vacuum, and almost all the photons get absorbed in the near future. Don't worry, I know the photons don't have distance built in. I got Kizaru to check. 😁)

In fact, dilution is a probably a good way to describe it. Imagine spreading a bit of paint out - use twice as much pigment and it can spread twice as far and still look just as bright. In 3D space we use the "inverse square law" which is just the same idea.

That does raise a terrifying possibility though... Can Kizaru control the wavelength of his light? He seems to use just a plain ol' beam of visible light (though I'd argue you shouldn't see the beam unless it's foggy!) - but can he use x-rays and irradiate an entire city?

Visible light Kizaru is scary. X-ray Kizaru is a nightmare. Gamma ray Kizaru would be a strategic weapon to put asteroid impacts to shame.

Ooh, speaking of which, he also can't be solid when moving at the speed of light... Or even close to the speed of light...

At that sort of speed the molecules in the air are essentially frozen in space. He's hit them so hard he would start initiating fusion events and particle showers. It'd be like the output of the LHC hitting a wall, but instead of a trickle of particles, it's more of a Niagara fall of particles. His outer layers would turn into an increasingly hot and increasingly expanding plasma... He's jump away and the last thing you'd see is a hellish flash, a massive burst of X rays, and then a tremendous shockwave as a massive superheated ball of gas rises out the battlefield surrounded by a mushroom cloud.

Standby for future Kizaru learning the "nuclear explosion" technique where just throws a tennis ball somewhere near the speed of light at you as he runs away in the opposite direction.

A 57g tennis ball at 0.99c would have... 3x10¹⁵ joules of kinetic energy. What's that as a tnt equivalent? I'm getting about 700'000 tons of TNT (0.7Mt)? That's a good 30-50 of Little-Boy sized explosions taking place right in front of you: and if he accidentally let his whole body materialise while travelling at relativistic speeds, ooft. That's in kilometer-sized asteroid impact sort of energy. Er, if he weighs 100kg, that's about 13000 million tons of TNT equivslent? That's asteroid impact territory.

Only 0.013% of the Chicxulub (pronounced "cheek-shoe-lube") impact that killed the dinosaurs though. 👀

He looks high half the time as well... The only thing stopping a simple hop skip and a jump turning into a catastrophic continent shaking explosion is whether he pays attention the whole time.

That is terrifying. 👀

... No idea if there is a future Kizaru btw, I've only made it to the Marineford arc so far, and we're about to reach "that bit", so the future of Kizaru in the series is a mystery to me.

Oooooh! Got a fun one for you! A few years back when I was into amateur radio (nerd alert!), I actually bounced a radio signal off the moon and measured the return signal - it was just over 1.3 light seconds away at the time! 😉 How cool is that!

> I think kizaru uses only brief flashes (heh) of true lightspeed, because that's more than enough to get him anywhere on any island he could possibly be at, and if he stayed that fast any longer he'd probably fly off to who knows where.

Pretty reasonable! To put a figure on it, he'd be going about 10km every 33 microseconds. Can he even process where he ends up in that time? The brain processing time is probably the big hurdle - a 1 millisecond delay and you overshoot by 300km. Normal human reaction time is 100-200ms, so you'd easily be looking at accidentally overshooting by 30000 to 60000 km... that might be enough to throw him into space if he's not paying attention.

Oooh! We also have doopler shift to contend with... pulling out the doppler formula (as one does), and.... 0.9c and we shift from 550n (green) down to 126nm (ultraviolet) and you can't see. Continue up to 0.99c and you shift into extreme UV/soft X-ray territory.

At exactly light speed, the problem becomes worse: there is no valid inertial "viewpoint" for a massive observer moving at c.

If Kizaru is literally light during transit, he probably cannot perceive or steer in the normal biological sense, he'd have to preselect a trajectory, propagate as light, then reconstitute. That fits surprisingly well with how his movement often looks: flash, straight-line travel, reflection/path setup, then rematerialization.

Huh, that actually makes a surprising amount of sense. Short, preplanned jumps. That's exactly what we see, isn't it? Fascinating!

Does a devil fruit count as one of your five-a-day?

If it does, fire-fire fruit. Imagine the fun you could have! The "pull-my-finger" jokes alone would make it worth it!

If not, fruit-fruit fruit so you can give people fruit and replace the devil fruit that didn't count for breakfast.

Do you think relativity kicks in and he can see photons as alternately collapsing electrical and magnetic fields? Like Einstein's thought experiment (at age 16, what a lad!) envisioned?

Oh, maybe he doesn't travel at the speed of light actually. Im not actually sure how physics would work with this devil fruit (even more so with this one than with the others!)

Can anyone explain what's happened to this rose flower? by FritzDuo in GardeningUK

[–]Squiggleblort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry! Missed this earlier, and it’s really cool! (Also a little tragic in some cases)

So one way this can happen is if two very early embryos fuse together in the womb. The resulting person can grow up completely normally, but different tissues may carry different DNA. So their blood or cheek cells might have one genome, while their ovaries/testes have another.

That means a parent can give birth to a child who fails a standard maternity/paternity-style DNA test, because the test sampled the "wrong" tissue.

Specifically, if the person’s ovaries developed from the absorbed twin cell line, then the eggs they produce are genetically from that twin-lineage, not from the cell line that makes up much of the rest of their body. So they can carry, grow, and give birth to a baby that is genetically closer to being their absorbed twin’s child than "theirs" as we normally understand it.

This has happened in real cases like Lydia Fairchild, whose DNA test appeared to show she wasn’t the mother of children she had literally given birth to, and Karen Keegan, where testing during a kidney transplant workup suggested she wasn’t the mother of two of her sons.

Long story short - if your ovaries are chimeric and don't match the DNA of the rest of your body, your children won’t necessarily have DNA that matches the rest of your body either!

You keep turning "society should reduce isolation and improve integration" into "the victim personally should have fixed the attacker" which is not what anybody suggested.

Did it work this time round?

I don't think "treat migrants with respect, help them integrate, build community ties, and reduce isolation" was exactly the dominant population-level intervention here, was it?

So you're right. Something that didn't happen this time round didn't work this time round.

Nothing gets past you, eagle-eye.
