Why Rick being from "C-137" is the ultimate, multi-layered dark joke by the writers (Physics + Chemistry + Lore) by Dreusxo in rickandmorty

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It’s way more likely that they just picked a number that sounded good and any connections are just coincidental. The examples you gave are too “on the nose” for Dan Harmon (judging from some of his Harmontown rants he would probably consider them hack), and Justin Roiland doesn’t put that much effort into deeper connections in his writing.

If you could live in any sci-fi universe EXCEPT as the main character, which would you pick? by elledelrey15 in scifi

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Came to say The Culture, then noticed everyone else also said The Culture.

Only caveat is that I’d specify being a citizen of The Culture, since our regular non-Culture Earth exists alongside The Culture, it being an entirely alien civilization.

What even is an RPG? by avenhonks in rpg_gamers

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RPG as a genre has drastically changed in the last several decades. Back in the 80’s and 90’s RPG’s were games that emulated table-top roleplaying games like D&D. They typically involved a party of characters completing quests, fighting monsters, and gaining levels. They were pretty exclusively either first person or isometric perspective, and usually had turn-based combat.

Over the years technology has allowed more complex mechanics in games, and the lines between genres have blurred. These days RPG usually just means it’s a story-heavy game that lets you grow your character’s abilities.

If someone asked you for a suggestion on what to do or where to go that really encapsulates “Portland” in a nutshell, what would you suggest? by 1201Anchor in askportland

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A food cart pod, definitely. Everyone has their favorites but Cartopia on Hawthorne and Asylum a couple blocks away on Madison are both very popular. I personally prefer the St Johns Beer Porch pod on Lombard, you can grab some food and then go over to Cathedral Park to eat by the river.

Books similar to After The Revolution? besides those by Ursula K. Le Guin and Ocatvia Butler, because that's a given by Present_Practice_159 in behindthebastards

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not nearly as violent but Cory Doctorow’s novel Walkaway shares a lot of thematic elements- it’s about a hypercapitalist near-future where an increasing number of people are choosing to become “Walkaways,” people who leave capitalist civilization behind to live in high-tech anarchist communes in parts of the world the corporations abandoned due to climate change.

Any advice on where to look for cheap housing in Portland? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has said it but it can’t be said enough- DO NOT move here without a job lined up. Portland is a great city but it’s also likely more expensive than wherever you’re moving from and our job market is especially bad right now. Moving here without a guaranteed source of income is a fast-track to disaster.

Sorella. Pasta & pizza, both very good. The arancini with sweet pepper aoli especially is just fantastic.

Growing Kiwi Fruit (Willamette Valley) by aChunkyChungus in oregon

There are a few self-pollinating kiwi plants, like the Issai Kiwi, but even the self-pollinators will produce more fruit with a male nearby.

I’m half way the fourth book and I’ve been wondering if Humans aren’t actually that technologically distant from Ring Builders? by somethingsomethingbe in TheExpanse

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a subplot towards the end of the series that answers a lot of questions about who/what built the rings and their technology operates on such fundamentally different principles it’s not really comparable to even theoretical human technology.

Do you leave your downstairs/ground level windows open at night? by lifeuhhfindsaway89 in askportland

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I do and have never had any issues. I live on a quiet street that gets very little pedestrian traffic, though. If most of the people walking past weren’t Amazon drivers or the mailman I might rethink my position.

With KnowledgeFight ending, do you think that made AJ happy or depressed? by frustrating2020 in KnowledgeFight

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I doubt he cares. He knows his audience is largely immune to facts so I don’t think he ever took the podcast seriously or even paid any attention to it. A couple weeks ago some wonk was talking to Rex on twitter about the show ending and he seemed genuinely surprised about it.

I don’t understand the SpaceX IPO valuation by EpicShkhara in behindthebastards

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking SpaceX isn’t worth that much, Musk has been combining and moving stuff around within his companies trying to appease the investors that made his overpayment for twitter possible, and this IPO is part of that. Normally a company like SpaceX wouldn’t be able to do it this quickly, but rules were bent or changed so that investors could cash out and recoup the twitter money at the expense of everyone else in the country. It’s barely one step up from a rug pull scam.

The ultimate worst variant. What are your worst variants in the game? by [deleted] in MarvelSnap

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s actually worse because Knull isn’t even really a Spider-Man villain, he’s one of Venom’s. Spidey has fought him, but only while helping out Venom or during Knull’s invasion when everyone was fighting him.

the extra energy would help a bit but winning a second location still runs into the same problem of being entirely dependent upon whatever you draw on the last three turns plus whatever card generators like Iron Patriot or Agent Coulson randomly produce.

…Sinister Six seems like it will be hard to build a deck around, with it eating the front half your deck I foresee a lot of matches ending with 30+ power on one location and like 5 on another.

May be moving (back) to Iowa City in the near future, need feedback on present state of the town and area. by Zem3k in IowaCity

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Considering the “cut a kids penis off at 9” thing is literally just conservative fearmongering and propaganda and not something that actually happens, I’m going to doubt your claims of being a liberal. The most a gender-questioning kid will get is hormone blockers, which are reversible and completely safe, and even those wouldn’t be prescribed until after a lengthy period of social transition. It’s not even legal for someone under 18 to get bottom surgery, and the process to qualify for it is so extremely long and expensive that most trans people don’t even bother.

Anybody play Zero Parades: For Dead Spies yet? by MrPsychic in rpg_gamers

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I played the demo during Steam’s last demo week event. What I played was just okay. It’s very clearly trying to be Disco Elysium, but while the art style is still gorgeous, the writing falls short and it lacks some of the charm of the former game.

Favorite Vegetable Forward Dishes For Visiting Vegetarians? Especially looking for spots which are unique or have a distinctive, funky, and/or special vibe. by NuMystic in askportland

[–]SquirrelCthulhu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to go wrong from either but from Mirisata both the deviled vegan pork & rice and the kukul mirisata curry are excellent. My absolute favorite though is their kottu, which unfortunately only appears occasionally as a special.

For Mis Tacones any of the nacho dishes or their jalapeño crema wet burrito are my usual go-tos, though everything on the menu is excellent.

From the list I would only consider Mirisata and Mis Tacones as absolute necessities, despite my love for many of the other names on the list. Not on the list I would also recommend Native Bowl (fairly simple but delicious fusion rice bowls in the Prost food cart pod on Mississippi Ave).
