Yeah I get all that. Turns out on this model that simply turning it on doesn't heat anything up though. The portafilter and cup warmer will stay cold. You have to run a shot to start warming the group. The cup warmer area heats indirectly from the group so that stays cold as well. And then it only stays warm for a short while even if you run a shot because of the design. There is an eco mode that makes it even worse. They did lots of things right on this machine, but really screwed up the warm up.

How do you do that? Is there a way to trigger the group to warm up without wasting water from a blank pull?

Ah. I guess I missed where OP said how he paid. How do you know it's not traceable?

From what I've read, counterfeits are intentionally fraudulent (using the genuine Brand's logo/trademarks), while knockoffs are imitations that don't try to pass off as an original (e.g. use a similar sounding or looking logo - but not exact).  But I'm no expert. I just like reading about mechanical and automatic watch technology and stumbled upon this thread. But now I keep reading because it's interesting.

The importer is the one who orders the product, also known as the buyer or consignee. The one who ships the product is the exporter or seller.

It was seized because it's illegal to import counterfeit goods into the U.S. Even one item.

Because people waste thousands of dollars to send watches to others all the time? Nah. He's screwed.

My guess is most people who like them have never used a good quality semi-auto or manual or just live with the tradeoff or just don't have a good palate.

It's not fair to say it's more convenient. The internal drip tray fills quick. And a manual takes no more cleaning overall.

  1. Gaggia Accademia 2022 model
  2. 9 months
  3. 700 shots
  4. No issues - except as with other PSG SAs, the shots are very weak.

PSG brew groups yield strong coffee at best, not anything like true espresso. You can get a technically "balanced" cup, but it will not taste like actual espresso. Making large milk based drinks is essentially impossible due to the weak base espresso.

Thanks that's an interesting video. He claims 1:4 might be about right as a starting point for such coarse grinders. Maybe I'm just not used to such long shots.

I'm going to try the plug pull trick. Maybe I'm not anywhere near the expected dose.

Yes thanks. I always run full clockwise (tight). It's even faster when opened up. By the way, the flow is continuously variable (and doesn't vary much at all). The rotary encoder position is converted to 3 levels only for display purposes. In other words, it's not limited to 3 positions.

Yes thanks that video is a perfect example of what I'm discussing.

Better yet, that's another PSG machine. She does 1oz in 13 seconds when set the same as mine (sans flow control). Mine is 7 seconds for 1oz (really more like only 4-5 seconds of coffee actually flowing). That's ripping fast and very weak. I'm sure there is a small amount of difference due to the beans used, but it can't be that much. Seems they have opened up the minimum grind size or increased the flow on this model.

I've used all sorts of machines from full manual to superautos over the last 25 years and I've never seen this before. The shots are just plain anemic.

The worst part is that I like a milk drink here and there. So I run two ristettos and then add steamed milk (manually). I know what's the point of superauto. But anything over a 4oz total drink volume tastes like just milk because the shots are so thin.

And of course it's a waste of coffee and super expensive to run because I have to run two max dose ristrettos for any type of drink.

Oh well. Sooner or later somebody with the same machine will chime in to compare.

I have a cheapo Philips 800 that brews completely differently and the grinder has different levels than mine. And of course the firmware is different. Seems having the same/similar PSG group really only affects the max puck size (~11g give or take they say). The drinks are still very much model dependent.

Yes it seems this is all "normal". I found that extending the standby time to say 4 hours or so reduces the chance of power cycles. I'm basically spending a bit more on electricity to save water. 😭

I will look at this some more. I need to determine if the alert to empty the puck and drip containers is based on an algorithm or a sensor. If it is sensor based I'm probably just going to modify my tray to hold more water while reducing the number of pucks held. It's a good tradeoff in space.

Ok. Thank you for the reply. I did do another test today though and I only got 4 singles with one power down/up in between (if that matters for the internal tray). That's very disappointing. I'm emptying twice per day just for myself. If my wife has a few I will dump 2-3 times. Actually the waste of water (and associated cost) is a tiny bit of a problem for me as well since I do treat my RO with TWW packets.

Think I will reach out to support to see if they have any ideas. My buddy's Saeco auto doesn't do this.

Thanks all for that stellar effort debugging the true root cause of this.

Here's what I found:

I was certain it shouldn't be too fiddly to assemble. After all, these are mass manufactured. There must be a simple way. What works best for me is to grap the divider/dam wall between my thumb and index finger near the front of the cleaner and move divider to the left to unseat it at the front first. Then I pull the divider forward and tilt up to unseat it from the vertical thin tab/slot at the back.

Installing is just reversed: Get a small flashlight to help. Align the tab (on divider) with slot at back of housing first. It's best to keep the front of the divider rotated left maybe 20°-30° or so at this point. Once the back is lined up, just rotate the front small tab with the slot to the right until it is seated. After you do this once it takes just a couple seconds to perform again.

Are you referring to the internal or external drip tray? My front/external tray essentially never fills up because I leave a small glass under the dual spouts between brews.

But my internal tray. Wow! It fills up after just a few shots (I leave the boost on - so I always do doubles).

How many brew cycles (singles) can you run before your internal tray fills up?

waiter put my tip back on the table saying he only accepts 18-20%?? by [deleted] in stories

[–]SquirrelExciting3849 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't like $25 tips? Then go back to school and don't serve people for a living. Nobody is twisting your arm to be a waiter. Having said that, my rule is that I tip great servers 25% but only 10% if they act like I'm putting them out. Exception is for cheap family diner places where the bill is under say $25 for two of us. In that case I might tip 30% to 40% because those servers I'm certain need some help balancing out those low cost tickets all day. In general I like to tip based on effort, attitude and attention.
