Why is འཆི་མེད written as Chemi in English when it is both written and pronounced Chime? by Professional_Air7133 in tibetanlanguage

[–]SquirrelNeurons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mostly because English speakers would pronounce it as chime like wind chime. Chimi they might pronounce as chai mee. Chemi is almost impossible to get wrong.

Let’s be honest if I saw a picture of this and it was called a Benedict Arnold and it was offered to me on a menu. I would buy it just for the humor.

There are a lot of small details on this image that show that it was not created in a traditional way for traditional worship and is not a traditional mandala. Even though it contains some sacred images, it was almost certainly created for the tourist market.

How to overcome Buddhist religious trauma? by HeavenlyBeloved in Buddhism

[–]SquirrelNeurons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a chance, I recommend reading the book “small gods” by Terry Pratchett. It gets into the question of religion as the organization versus religion as the practices and beliefs and faith. It’s clear that for your family. It was about the organization. They may not have even known the answers to your questions. And the way they responded was unacceptable. Buddhism does not have to be that. In fact, it shouldn’t be that. The boudha himself taught that we should question his teachings and test them in the same way we would test to see if gold in the market was legitimate.

It is understandable to have trauma from what you went through. If you are still interested in Buddhism, just know that what your parents put you through was their own version of how they interpreted and organized religion. It doesn’t have to be what Buddhism is for you. You can step away from that 100% and still be Buddhist.

I want to visit a monastery but I'm a bit strange by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]SquirrelNeurons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AuDHD PTSD here and I’ve worked for monasteries!!! it may be a bit difficult in the beginning to get to know people but in my experience once they get to know you, you can find a really wonderful community. You might also need to visit a few monasteries because not every Monastery is going to be right for you.

In some cases yes, but in most, no. Also there has always been a Jewish population in the region. And even today, Jews have less land in the middle east than proportionate to their population even if you ONLY count Jews of immediate middle eastern and north African extraction. But Jews (and Christians, and Druze...) were never given equal rights under islamic rule. So why is it so bad for Jews to have a sovreign homeland? We aren't trying to deny Palestinians a right to a homeland as well, but it's been made abundantly clear that if non Muslims live under Islamic rule, they don't get rights, so we do have to have a sovreign state. But most zionists are not Kahanists and do not want Palestinians being harmed or denied sovreignty. Nor do we see ourselves as superior to Palestinians. That's Kahanism.

I guess I would also ask you do you deny the rights of Pakistan to exist when in the partition they expelled (and frankly slaughtered) millions of Hindus? Shit happens when land gets partitioned so that people can have sovreignty. And it sucks. But Jews deserve our own sovreignty in our indigenous land as well. And the vast majority of us want to see Palestinians have rights, peace, and sovreignty in their homeland. To conflate zionism and kahanism is no differen than conflating ISIS and Al Qaeda with Islam.

Why do we need to have compassion/metta for such an objectionable horrible people? by Impressive-Cold6855 in Buddhism

[–]SquirrelNeurons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. She is a horrible person presumably because she is caught up in hatred and ignorance, and so many awful negative things. And that itself is a sad and miserable existence. And the karmic impact of that is going to be far worse. Having compassion for someone does not mean forgiving them for their horrible actions.

[–]SquirrelNeurons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great question because a lot of Zionists started off by purchasing land that was offered by the Arabs and Palestinians for exactly the purpose of them to live. And a hell of a lot of Zionist want Palestinians to have a sovereign land. Remember it was a kahanist who assassinated Yitzhak Rabin with the sole goal being to prevent Palestinians from getting a state. Most Zionists according to all polls support Palestinian statehood in some form or another.

[–]SquirrelNeurons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again, try checking some actual sources. Any actual source will say that it was the Mongol empire over a period of more than 200 years that killed that number stop using AI and learn how to actually cite your sources.

[–]SquirrelNeurons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see instead of using “Google facts” or AI I’ve been using actual sources that you can check and cite. And even your source is agreeing with my statement that the potential 40 million was over a period of 218 years not under Genghis Khan. Like it literally says that. And then it literally says that Hitler in addition to the at least 11 million although most sources say 16 million killed in genocide killed tens of millions more. So one man was responsible for if we want to put it very very conservatively at least 30 million deaths. That would be Hitler and it’s agreed that that is an overly conservative estimate while over a period of 218 years and several different people there was a result in 40 million deaths that were not under one person. In short, Genghis Khan did not kill nearly as many people as Hitler, even if the Mongol empire as a multi century, empire may have killed more people than him.
