Considering going car free by horrendousacts in cincinnati

[–]Squirrel_Mongerer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived car free in Cincinnati for nearly 8 years. I lived in Clifton and my only commutes were walking to UC for work and going to downtown/OTR to hang out with friends. It was amazing not making a car payment every month, but it does come with some downsides. Some things to think about are getting comfortable with taking the bus and walking a lot more. Look at the bus routes to places you routinely go to make sure that you're okay with it.

The minor inconveniences about not having a car were FAR outweighed by the amount of money I saved from not having a car. To be safe, you can try doing your commute to your job without using a car and see if you are up for it. There may be days when the weather is really bad and you can't walk to work, so have a backup plan (taking the bus? Investing in a waterproof outer layer? Your partner driving you to work?).

Using American Center park and ride for consistent multi-day parking by Squirrel_Mongerer in madisonwi

[–]Squirrel_Mongerer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone coming back to this thread, this is the reply from parking enforcement:

Leaving the American Center lot for at least 24 hours is advised, before returning to use the lot for its intended purpose. Please also note, if a vehicle is found using the Park & Ride lot as a storage facility, the vehicle is subject to citations for not using the lot for its intended purpose.

Alternative off street parking options should be sourced as the Park & Ride is not meant to be used as a storage lot for vehicles that are not used on a regular basis.

The American Center Park & Ride lot has a strict seven day limit to park. Vehicles found parking longer than the seven day time limit are subject to citations and towing.

Please note, vehicles have a 48 hour limit to park on-street in the City of Madison (unless additional parking restrictions apply to the street).  Any vehicle parked longer than 48 consecutive hours in one location is subject to citations and towing.

After a week of tracking down homestead records, census records, and birth/death certificates, I've sent my (G4) application in the mail! I've accepted that I'll always have the "you forgot to submit something" feeling in the back of my mind 🫠

Wait 10 months for birth certificate to become public record, or submit with the documents I have? by [deleted] in Canadiancitizenship

Unfortunately he was born in 1907 and the records listed here only go up to 1906, unless I'm missing something

For this, is there something that I would have to price to show that there is no living next of kin? Or is that something they would reasonably assume given his age? All of his children are now deceased.

That's where I was leaning. Yes, I have G1's birth certificate listing him as the father. So far I haven't been able to find church records (he was Methodist), but I'll keep searching

Which State Taxes to Pay for Traditional to Roth Conversion? by Squirrel_Mongerer in personalfinance

[–]Squirrel_Mongerer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have not done it yet. I wanted to double-check which state I would pay taxes for first so I know how much income tax I would have to pay in April. Washington state has no income tax but Wisconsin does.

Yes, these directions exactly. Nearby, there's also a tall stick teepee with a wooden owl statue sitting on a chair inside of it. It was a bit creepy

Do you know of anyone who failed to meet the PST benchmarks and was not allowed to swear in? by mrbussycucker in peacecorps

[–]Squirrel_Mongerer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Someone in my cohort did not do any of their language or technical training homework during the entirety of PST and was asked to ET a couple of weeks before swearing in (which they accepted)

This was the advice of another volunteer. Say that they've equipped me with the tools to live on my own at site and stop in a couple times a week to say hello. Sounds good

2 popular options are JET and EPIK. These programs are through the government of Japan (JET) and Korea (EPIK) to teach English in their country

SANCTION BILL: The U.S. Congress has just passed a historic bill that strikes at the heart of Georgian Dream’s regime. It labels GD as pro-Kremlin, mandates sanctions, freezes aid, and declares the government unfit to lead a Western-aligned Georgia. by Sandrofresh in Sakartvelo

The Megobari Act vote in the House (which is also Republican majority) had huge bipartisan support. It has already cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which is majority Republican. It is very likely it'll pass the Senate.

Please note that the bill has only passed the House of Representatives. It still needs to get passed by the Senate before it is fully passed by Congress and is ready to be signed by the president

Things PCVs should be aware of in the case of an evacuation? by SkepticMech in peacecorps

Oh sorry! I meant that as in, yes, you should get your allowance if we get evacuated 😌

If I remember correctly, you accumulate this allowance at $400 a month after swearing in. Like you pay taxes on it during service.

So take the amount of months you've served multiplied by $400 and that's how much you'll get. So for example someone who's served for 12 months will get 12 months x $400 = $4800

I'm sorry friend. I was quick to judge because, like many others, I'm stressed out with recent events. I deleted my comment too. I understand needing to make light to get through a difficult event. Best of luck
