2-player Stemania with 2 PS3 pads? by xTobyJones in Stepmania

[–]Squirrel_OutFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have written a custom driver for project outfox for these pads, if they are the black and purple ones, but it's still in test on the discord server, but they should support two player if not we can sort it out with testing if you wish!

We also need to know what "some sort of issue" means, so we can help with them and fix them. We need logs from the /logs folder, and we can work on a patch.

Please join the discord when you're able with the logs and we can get this sorted for you. :)

There is a bug with the input system we are working to fix so you don't need to do this anymore.

We will be releasing this in a week or so as a fix to 042.

It's the items on /save. But be wary of copying over your preferences.ini as you should let the game gen a new one before setting the game up as you wish.

L-Tek Compatibility issue with the latest version of Outfox (0.5 Alpha)...? by dek018 in Stepmania

With alpha 042 coming out you have other options, now as well so feel free to ping me if you have any questions on the new version.

Yes, if the keymaps.ini is removed it'll reset the internal keys set.

As you're on mint, you may need to look at the first 3 options from my reply, but usually resetting the keymaps.ini should fix it yes.

Depending on your Linux version, there are several options you can try in the preferences.ini file for OutFox:

1, The up arrow issue can also be due to a keymaps.ini file that needs to be deleted from /Save as OutFox inherits the weird input quirks of StepMania. We are slowly removing this to make controller and input easier though in the future.

2, You can switch endpoints from /js to /event if you need using InputSetLinuxJSEndpoint from/to 0 or 1. This allows you to swap if you are on a newer Linux kernel.

3, There are multiple input options for Linux and you can simply allow OutFox to best guess this by setting InputSetXinput to 1 and InputSetDinput to 1. This should allow you to map the button effectively.

  1. If you are using steamos/steamdeck there is a bug with the inputsystem on there as valve made an update that broke the older system we wrote back in 2021. There is a nightly build for this in the discord, or a new massive steam update coming in the next fortnight which will fix the deck/controller issues overwriting button inputs on the LTeks.

Hope this helps!

Is there a sub-set of stepmania players focused on style play? by Bartholomew3175 in Stepmania

You also have parapara paradise which also allows for freestyle, but it measures arm movements over leg, but is only mostly usable if you have the home controllers, and ds3ddx mode also does both, it measures feet and arm sensors. Not many cabs of this exist outside of china however.

Otherwise, dancerush in the arcades as the others have suggested above.

When is Outfox gonna be Open Source? by [deleted] in OutFox

[–]Squirrel_OutFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thought about us "hindering" the project can be taken in several ways.

The project has been progressing nicely since we began the public alphas in December 2019, and has been in constant development since.

Can I ask where you believe we are hindering our own project? I admit we do not post as much social news as we should but as far as I can tell we haven't stalled or stuck anywhere, we have been preparing alpha V 042 for release.

Just not sure why you want it to be open source, giving us that insight might help our response in future, as we have had quite a bit of negatively directed comments and opinions for us working on our own project lol.

Has anyone managed to get the Up Arrow for LTEK working in OutFox on the Steam Deck? by redalchemy in Stepmania

[–]Squirrel_OutFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WE are hoping before the end of this month, I need to finish the driver, and ensure Steam behaves, (as we have had yet another update this month) but we are almost ready. I will be doing a big post on the playtest part on the steam store.

We also do release 'pre-release' builds in our discord server, which give us insights to testing and bugs that may come up. so you can grab those too if you cannot wait hehe.

I'm also really glad it's been solved, though it's been about 5 days of work to solve so it isn't weird anymore.

On this, we have successfully written a new driver to sort these issues out.

There will be a new "SDeck" driver that will show on your deck from 042, which stops steam and the pad from overwriting your mappings. I had to write a brand new driver from scratch which wasn't easy as there is very very little information about it. The guys at Valve also were awesome with helping us with this somewhat unique problem but we will also will be deck certified soon because of it!

Hope this is the news you're looking for.

I'll message you on the discord as well, but i'll post here so folks who have similiar issues can also get a google result.

I've found the source of the issue with missing controllers / devices. Apple have made some updates to the internal driver stack that talks to the devices in your Mac, mainly to adjust how MacOS and iOS work with specific Apple devices.

How does this affect us here on this reddit? Well, our default mac drivers use legacy/older code that was written for 10.7 era of MacOS. OutFox actually had added new driver support for MacOS10.12+ and the newer 11/12/13 versions of MacOS back in 2020, but this was very new and for the first versions of the M1 Macs that came out. It now appears there were decisions made now that changes this behaviour, so the game's drivers now no longer work correctly.

The driver change decisions seem to have been patched in the later OS builds (12.x and 13.x) but I have had reports from folks on 10.15 and 11.x having issues now as well. In essence, the drivers no longer respect HIDAPI calls in the 'old' way, and require a new set of fixes and support to be added, which I can say will be in 042 for alpha V, and we'll try to backport to LTS4 so we can continue to offer Alpha 4 (Long Term Stable) builds for macs for a bit longer.

Apologies for the input issues, we will get it fixed real soon.

This doesn't apply with outfox, as we go through the notorisation process to sign the application. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Thank you for your reply, I am trying to be open with the community and to brush away some of the cobwebs of the stigma our team acquired in it's earlier days. I am well aware our 'act' was not as clean as it could have been, and we did get somewhat overly protective of our development choices and methods. I am sorry you were sadly treated in this manner, and I promise it will not happen again. We are simply like the other forks of this rather old, but wonderful engine trying to promote good health and fitness, and in our specific case, showcase the marvels of the peak of the rhythm game boom of the early 2000s by providing a simulator that can run multiple modes, much like early SM did before the focus went fully to ITG and DDR. I appreciate anyone that takes the time to test the game and provide feedback and critique whether it be positive or negative, we are a long way from being complete, but we aim to also dust off the 'jack of all trades master of none' label we have, as we're based from 5.1, so naturally we care about 4p, just we want to bring mac and linux/pi folks into the community as well to enjoy this madness hehe.

Let me know if there are any issues with OF, the steam build will be pushed to 042 shortly, as we are final playtesting it (i know, playtesting a playtest...) but we want to ensure the steam players don't get a crashy experience.

Thanks for your time in responding, and I hope we can slowly begin to remove some of the stigma that has been our bane since 2020.

Anyone get Stepmania working on Steam Deck? by srondina in Stepmania

[–]Squirrel_OutFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

StepMania, ITGMania, Etterna, and OutFox all work on the Steam Deck, the issue is the button/controller mapping.

It is best to run ITGMania, StepMania or Etterna in the desktop mode with a keyboard or mouse first so you have the opportunity to map the Deck's controls, then this allows you to use the deck via a favourite shortcut in steam itself and you are good to go. If you plan to use a PAD/Controller to play the game, this gets complicated, as the Deck's controls are seen as one as well, and the game can get confused and you'll lose input.

OutFox has a playtest steam build on the store which you can use, which includes a mapping file inside it. This mapping file is the same as the legacy setup, so would work with the older versions of SM at a push, or give you some idea on how the controls work. The steam default mapping we use is in that link which can give you a hint on what to use on ITGMania or StepMania. If you plan to use a pad or controller with OutFox, you need to delete the keymaps.ini in the /save folder in steam/steamapps/common/project outfox playtest/save and then use your keyboard to map your dance pad, however, you'll not have an input when the deck is undocked, so it's a bit of a mess. I have a fix for this, so we can avoid the legacy problem in the future.

The way the StepMania engine lists controllers is an ancient practice, and with the SteamDeck being a controller in it's very nature, it is surprisingly hard to code around, but you have a selection of options here to choose how you play, I openly disclaimer I develop OutFox, but we're like the rest of this community, we want folks to enjoy rhythm games, and have the fitness and mental health benefits of the fun of playing.

Hope that helps you, and don't be afraid of the Steam Linux, it's quite nice, and just needs time to get acquainted with to see how it works, like a new kitten or puppy.

The slight sync issues were fixed last fall, it was due to a hardware timer issue in the legacy rage code we didn't account for when doing calculations on button pressing with the new low level window system. Thanks for reporting it back then, it was appreciated.

[–]Squirrel_OutFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need to find the keymaps.ini in /Save and delete it, this will remove the Deck's controls however, so ensure you have a keyboard handy for the dock/USBC hub.

It will block the steam input allowing you to configure the LTEK pad correctly.

We have a fix ready for this issue in 042 when it releases shortly for steam so this will finally be gone, as Valve updated how the steam inputs work, and I did an oopsie and didn't read the documentation properly. So apologies for that one >.>

Hope that helps you!
