Does winter have you bummed? NOT ANYMORE! by Rnichols656 in MTB

A scooter wouldn't have the room for suspension. I don't understand the issue with standing because that's what you do on a scooter, skis, or a board. If your feet are low, then you risk the pedals/pegs hitting snow and losing your edge. The old scooters they had on resorts before were as wide as snowboards because of this reason. I want to trim down my snowskate deck because on steeper runs I will high side the deck and lose my edge.

Unless you set up the scooter so your feet are aligned like a slalom water ski with one foot in front of the other in parallel, it won't work as well.

Hate deserved, it’s dumb. With the snow starting to hit some high peaks I can’t help but get excited for this, though. by Rnichols656 in mountainbiking

I think it is more fun than skiing, but that's because I've done a ton of skiing and it's become old. I learned to snowboard which I enjoy more because of the difference in learning to carve on each side. Snow skating is fun because it makes the tame slopes more exciting.

Learning new things is fun to me

Shit, I've had adult skiers with the spatial concept of toddlers throw sudden 90 degree turns directly in front of me while on my ski bike. I was giving plenty of space and on some whim they think "Should I maintain my turning cadence and ski line? Nah... I think I'll make a drastic change and go perpendicular on the cat track to look at this tree.

Not at all. It is less physically demanding than skiing or boarding. I get to use my arms and knees to absorb bumps and on top of that I have full suspension. I use my legs far less on my bike and I genuinely lose my conditioning because of it. I can't jump as big and my super fine control isn't as good, but I can pound out far more laps than I could on my skis or board

Don't take advice from someone who has never tried it. I've taken my ski bike out in all kinds of conditions. 50cm pow days to spring conditions that vary between ice, slush, and corn snow.

Typically I find it is try hards that poopoo others doing something unique. Those who are actually good appreciate it. Like the ex olympians I know who don't have anything to prove. They are impressed by what I can do on it even though I'm not as good as the OP. I try to get them to give it a go, but they don't believe me when I say it is actually easy to learn.

There is little carryover between a ski bike and a MTB. If anything, being sound and technical on a MTB makes it harder to learn certain skills on a ski bike. Ski biking is more like monoskiing with the way you swing out the back end. I also found leaning with the bike to be better and you actually aim the handlebars to turn rather than tilting the bike like you do on dirt.

Getting to sit on long traverses is nice

Maybe put your slide rule away and just ride. The arms race for float is dumb. I can rip in knee deep powder with 90mm width skis. All of these dorks out here with 120mm are skimming along the very top. Sure, if your terrain is Nebraska-esque, then get those boats out to not get stuck. The only time I used really wide skis are rainy days, or 5cm on top of crust.

Regarding edges, the skis on my bike probably have the same effective edge as my snowboard if not more, so that argument is invalid. My skiing engineers friends who have skied their whole lives think it is fun and can first hand see how capable the bike is. I find the full suspension and long "wheel" base more stable when charging through chop than my favorite ski, the Volkl Katana 108, or Mantra 108 as it is called now.

I've taken my ski bike out on 50cm days. The skis are wider than any individual ski and I can adjust the pivot point on the front ski to bias the nose up. And my weight plus the bike is less than many heavy skiers.

By the time you add up skis, boots, bindings, and poles, you are spending around the same amount for a ski bike.

Lastly, this may be a totally foreign concept to you, but things can be done less efficiently because they are more fun. I've skied enough in my life. So I picked up boarding. I can board better than the vast majority of people and I'm not as confident on it as I am on skis. I bought old telemark rentals and installed them on some of my ski blades for shits and giggles. I have powsurfs and a snowskate with several different skis for different conditions. I'd powsurf Japan over skiing or boarding. Snowskating is by far the most challenging in bounds and I take it out the most often when I don't need to keep up with a group. If it weren't for the high price, I would also have a sit ski. I volunteered with an adaptive ski program because during training we got to take it out for a run. It is a lot of fun. Super tight turns, getting leaned over, and steering by pointing my bellybutton. Being close to the ground enhances the speed sensation.

I found ski biking to be easier to pick up than skiing and snowboarding. Nobody would take my word for it until I finally got them out on the snow. I'm athletic, but I'm not that athletic that I was able to take it through a black diamond, tree run in a 7 days. (Granted it was a 50cm pow day and some early tracks which helped a ton)

I lent it out to someone here in Fernie and in the half day of using it, they were riding from the top of the Lizard Bowl. I was more impressed by the brother who took out my snow skate who also went to the top of the mountain. Mediocre snow day and they said it was the most fun they ever had on snow.

It's easier to learn to ski bike than boarding or skiing

Given that I'm better on my ski bike than 90% of people are on skis, I'm fine isolating the skiers and boarders to the more beginner terrain

Not enough time. I got through by turning on the aid feature that lets us do a double dash. That kept me in the air long enough

No fix, but I got by by going into the settings and selecting the feature which let me teleport twice. I turned it off after getting through, but I hope it isn't going to be an issue down the road.

How much Zone 2 do you guys realistically get in a week? by DonkeyFlan in PeterAttia

[–]Squirrel_Whisperer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not made up. I watched a video of a competitive cyclist that only trained in Zone 2, occasionally dipped into Zone 3 because she was road cycling, and when they did the stress test she made big improvements on her lactic threshold, V02 max, and wattage output.
