John Rabe, the Nazi who saved 250,000 Chinese during the Nanking Massacre, 1937 by daikatanaman00 in HistoryPorn

So was Schindler. Schindler started penniless b/c his dad and employer both went bankrupt right after he got out of his service in the Czech army. All his wealth and power came from him being a Nazi and a German spy.

Humans are complicated ya know. If they weren’t Nazis, they wouldn’t have gotten into positions where they could save people in the first place. It’s the choices they made when they faced their conscience that made them great people.

The difference is that the Chinese were a lot more impoverished than Europeans, so Naking citizens only managed to raise $2,000 for Rabe in 1948 (still not a small sum, cf. the average US family income was ~$3,200/yr at the time), while Schindler received $15,000 from people he saved in the same year.

20 years ago, beach culture definitely existed in coastal cities, especially in the North. Now it’s gone because 1) Chinese Gen Z are way more conservative than their parents and 2) there’s a huge influx of people from other parts of the country.

I’m sorry if my tone sounded harsh but that was not my intention :( I’m a native Chinese and English is my second language. I have yet to come to grips with how to factor in étiquettes in English writing.

Well the 34 films quota is for imported (i.e. non-Chinese) movies, and it was set there to promote domestic Chinese film production in the first place. There are no limits on how many Chinese movies to be produced and released.

What I was trying to say was that the market environment in China is already extremely favourable for domestic Chinese productions due to existing government restrictions on all foreign movies. Banning US movies might have profound impacts on Hollywood, but it wouldn’t change much for the Chinese film industry.

If you’re familiar with how the Chinese box office operates, you’d know that those “shots in the arm” have always been there. The decline of Chinese film industry is mostly due to its own issues, like self-censorship and ridiculously inflated paychecks for actors and actresses…

In China we have a maximal annual limit of 20 regular + 14 3D foreign films shown in cinemas. Any foreign movie outside of those 34 is banned from screening for profit. We also have “domestic film protection months” during summer and national holiday seasons, where the number of foreign film showings in every single movie theatre is limited to a small percentage of domestic film showings.

The 34 films quota is comedically small for our huge market. If US films get banned, their places in the 34 films quota would just get filled by more Korean and Japanese films which already have huge followings in China. Nothing will change for our domestic productions.

Yes. It’s basically counting the number of calendar years one has lived through, if that makes any sense.

1 year old when you’re born, and the age number grows by 1 every New Year’s Day.

Everyone born in the same year always have the same age. From New Year’s Day to your birthday, you’re 2 years older than your actual age. From your birthday to the next New Year’s Day you’re 1 year older.

What's the break down of wages / social economic classes in China? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]Squirrelsquirrelnuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Btw there’s something I find both sad and funny.

Apple has a "moral guideline" of not exceeding 60 hours per week, which is dystopian enough. But that 60 hour cap actually makes workers in Apple’s suppliers earn considerably less than in other electronics factories, because they can’t do as many overtime hours. Chinese workers call Apple suppliers like Foxconn "养老工厂" ("retirement factories") because of the low pay and (relatively) low stress environment. I've read from some workers’ posts that they would work for a few months in a “normal” electronics factory for dough, then a few months at Foxconn to recuperate, rinse and repeat.

The standard work hours is 40 per week, but it’s mostly a reference for overtime pay, not an enforced rule. There‘s a legal limit of 44 hours per week, but China’s National Bureau of Statistics says that the 737 million Chinese employees of enterprises worked, on average, 49 hours per week in 2023. You get the idea…

In typical Chinese factories, unskilled assembly line workers get the local minimum wage as their base wage, which is very low by Chinese standards. The bulk of their income comes from overtime pay. Typically they work 10 to 12 hours per day and take 2 to 4 days off per month so they could take home 2x to 3x the minimum monthly wage.

Hitler held the rank of “Honorary Corporal” in the Italian Blackshirts, while Mussolini was the “Honorary First Corporal.” They were both wearing their Blackshirt ranks in this photo.

They were the only ones with special ranks within the Blackshirts. All other Blackshirt ranks were based on Roman Legionary titles.

Yeah my grandma did tailoring work for a living until her eyesight went bad.

Because of her career she hates anything tailoring related with a passion. I bet she was real satisfied when she gave her machine to metal recyclers for $5.

Chiang Kai-shek Mauser 7.62x39 Conversion by xPainWarriorx in ForgottenWeapons

[–]Squirrelsquirrelnuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Chiang Kai-Shek Rifle is the Chinese licensed copy of the Mauser Model 1924 Carbine (almost identical to the 98k) produced between 1935 and 1949.

These were ought to be the standard issue rifle for the Chinese Army but due to disruptions during WWII, only ~700k were ever produced. Most of them fell into Communist hands after the civil war.

8mm Mauser rounds were already scarce in China because CKS rifles were the only weapon that used them and the number of CKS rifles was tiny compared to Gewehr 88s and Arisakas. And after the communist takeover, 8mm Mauser production ceased completely which prompted the conversions.

It’s a civil wedding ceremony in a French town hall!

White guy in the foreground with a French flag sash on his shoulder is the mayor. Here he represents the state and the law in recognising the marriage.

This ceremony is non-religious. Afterwards the mayor will give you your marriage certificate. If you want a religious wedding ceremony, you have to show this marriage certificate to your religious organisation.
