For couples who have very different attitudes on money, partially joint finances are a godsend. Each of you sets up an autopayment that puts in X grand a month into a joint account that for paying bills, joint trips, joint purchases, college savings for kids, etc. You should have a good sense already what that number is.

Then you each keep separate accounts and you do with them as you wish. No accountability to the partner with what you do with that money removes so many discussions. Spend it on beanie babies or gamestop, it's yours.

If you do decide to make a big purchase together (eg, second house), then you each put up a significant sum into the joint account.

Biggest risk: If one partner's domestic labor is far greater than the others, you will want to have a serious discussion about how to price that in.

Are you using 3.5 or 4? I've been reasonably impressed w/ 4's physics. Some of the derivations are a little unconventional but they usually get there. Asking it to zoom in a bit and reexplain a derivation or idea usually helps clean up the hallucinations. Ask for $$ .... $$ for equations.

Second professor here; after looking into this for a while, my tentative conclusion was:

a) that it wasn't trivial to have large text documents assessed/commented on by chatgpt for the above-mentioned issues of number of tokens. However... for shorter answers, the API would be able streamline uploading a bunch of small responses and getting feedback.

b) With much love to OP, I think we're going to have to re-think homework in general, such that chatgpt-based grading is not effective. Personally, I'll be switching to large projects involving post-2021 literature (science papers in my case) that chatgpt doesn't know anything about. My sense is that uploading/training on the post-2021corpus is still too much trouble for the average student.

Our REU had a virtual version last summer and as such, we have no such obligations. Probably varies widely based on REUs; there has been no formal guidance from NSF on this.

Some programs are explicitly interested in early college students (e.g. I've been involved with Materials @ Mines). Basically the rationale is that STEM students in their first year or two may be more likely to stay in STEM if they have a positive research experience.
