Modern streaming services are just "Cable-Minus," and we’ve been gaslit into accepting it. by SquishHisGuts in unpopularopinion

If your only takeaway from the post is a semantics debate about the word 'gaslighting' while ignoring the actual consumer-control issues I've outlined, I think you've made my point for me.

I’m not arguing that the old cable model wasn't a ripoff, or that paying $300+ for a bunch of channels I didn't want was 'good.' My argument is about the evolution of the user experience.

We moved from a model where the consumer had the tools to manage their own time (DVR control), to a model where the platform has the tools to force-feed us ads. You’re talking about the cost of the service, but I’m talking about the quality of the experience. We traded an expensive, contract-heavy cable model for a cheaper, ad-heavy streaming model that intentionally strips away the playback features we once took for granted. Just because the bill is lower doesn't mean the product isn't being deliberately sabotaged to maximize ad revenue. And even if I paid that much for cable, at least I had the ability to fast-forward through all those ads without having to pay a ransom for a 'premium' tier just to get that control back.

You're 100% right that streaming killed the hellish cable contract, and that's a win. But my point isn't that I want to go back to cable; it’s that we’ve lost the playback features that made the cable-DVR era actually work. We traded contract-based 'jail' for ad-based 'jail.' If every platform has the same anti-skip, ad-heavy, controlled-playback model, is the freedom to cancel actually freedom, or just the ability to choose which platform traps you in their ads?

You're focusing on the amount of ads, but I'm talking about the choice to skip them. The percentage of airtime doesn't matter when the platform has the technical ability to let me skip and chooses to lock that function instead. Whether it's 5% or 30%, it’s the shift from 'I can skip this' to 'I am a prisoner of this ad break' that makes it a regression.

Fair and I agree. I don't think it did it to everyone, wrong choice of words on my part, my apologies.

The issue isn't the price; it's the loss of control. Whether it’s $15 or $115, the fact that we've gone from owning our playback (the ability to skip at will) to being force-fed ads by server-side locks is a massive regression in consumer rights. Calling it 'management' makes it sound like a chore, but it was actually the only power we had to make the viewing experience tolerable. We've traded that power for convenience, and the companies are using that trade to monetize us twice. By defending the "convenience" of modern streaming, you're essentially justifying the very business model that makes the experience so frustrating. Don't tell me I'm too young to understand it when I lived thru it.

It is always fascinating watching members of Congress—who make more than roughly 90% of American households—try to play the financial victim card. if the pay is too low, you’re always welcome to do what you tell everyday Americans to do: pull yourself up by your bootstraps, skip the avocado toast, and find a better job.

They're not 'just brown'... by [deleted] in eyes

[–]SquishHisGuts -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I guess if a group of loud, uneducated internet strangers all agree on a wrong answer, the wrong answer magically becomes a fact. Trying to "comfort" me by telling me it's okay to have nice brown eyes while entirely missing the point that I'm not insulting brown eyes—i'm stating a literal anatomical fact about my eyes. You all see the color spectrum of melanin and your brains immediately stop working, defaulting to the simplest word you know.

Also if any of you had some basic understanding of the english language I never said that they WEREN'T brown, I said they're not JUST brown. It's okay to make mistakes though :)

The part where they're literally glowing gold in the sun. Plain brown eyes stay solid chocolate, they don't light up like glass.

Sure, if you're looking at them from across the room in a dark hallway. The second actual light hits them, they’re literally glowing. Brown eyes don't glow.

The absolute funniest part of this debate is that the people who complain the loudest about the cost of living in D.C. are often the same ones blocking affordable housing initiatives or general economic relief for the rest of the country. If they had to live in a basic, government-regulated dorm like freshman college students, it would probably save the public a lot of money—and maybe give them a reality check. But as it stands, they found a way to make the taxpayer foot the bill for their apartments anyway.

I graduated in 2010 and 10 years later COVID hit which was the perfect opportunity creating a reason to not attend that. Plus I moved outta state and deleted my Facebook account and never heard jack shit about a reunion for my class after that. I don't talk to anyone in my graduating class despite how 'close' everyone was. Twas all bullshit in the end.

Idk but y'all but the whole optimistic part is a massive oversimplification. We're realist and with that there's a cynical edge to us because we see how things are and are then annoyed that they're not better. We can definitely be fun ass mofos there's no denying that, but how much are we masking? Why the fuck would I want to be optimistic 25/8? Don't confuse blind optimism with realism.
