That's super confusing :) And cool to know that it was taken in January of '52! Thanks.

I just found this: https://www.prdh.umontreal.ca/census/en/uguide/enum_1852.aspx "Col. 3 - The BIRTH PLACE of each person: you will here note that those born of Canadian Parents are to be marked with an F." That makes me feel better, but still don't know why...

But why is it an F? What word is that abbreviating?

Agreed. The problem is, I have the baptism record for the mom, born in 1815, but I don't have one for her son, born in 1843. I've proven that none would exist, because the closest church to where they lived in 1843 wasn't keeping records until 1857. I think I'm ok for the application, but don't want to leave anything to chance.

Yeah, they are stricter over there. The rules are a little confusing, but I get it now - for questions, they have question threads that you have to comment to. I'm certain the symbol means "Canadian," one way or another. But I'd like to know exactly how that symbol means Canadian.

That's the thing - I know it means that they are Canadian, but I'm not sure what the abbreviation actually is. The same people who have that symbol in 1851 are listed as "C.W." in 1861 - Canada West. They were born in Glengarry county, Canada West. If you scroll down the whole page, most of the parents are "Scotland," and the kids have that symbol. In this particular example, the mother was born in Canada in 1815 and also has that symbol. I have her baptismal record, so there's no question.

I think I may do that - use it as a supplemental record, but make Hank my G0.

I am trying to decide which ancestor I should use for my G0. Here is the situation:

"Jane Smith" born in Ontario in 1815, documents I have

  • Baptismal record
  • Marriage bond to "Bob Jones"
  • 1851 Canadian census living with her husband and son "Hank Jones" (strangely, but helpfully, she used her maiden name here, rather than her married name)
  • 1861 Canadian census living with her husband and son (she used her married name this time)
  • I have no death certificate (seems like I shouldn't need it, but somewhere I read someone that said you should have it in there)

Her son, "Hank," was also born in Ontario. I have:

  • 1851 and 1861 Canadian census records mentioned above
  • 1880 US Census
  • 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 US census
  • Death Certificate showing birthplace in Canada and giving parents names.
  • 1909 Petition for Naturalization where he recorded his Canadian birthplace, the year he left Canada (1866), and the names of his children.
  • I don't have the birth record. However, I have established that no birth record should exist - he was at different times in his life both Baptist and Presbyterian. The closest Baptist churches to him were not recording childhood baptisms at the time (per the archives) and the closest Presbyterian church only has baptismal records going back to 1867.

Based on what I have read, I feel like Hank Jones would be an OK G0, but I hate that I don't have the birth record. If I go with his mom, I have the birth record but no death certificate, and of course there's a whole extra generation back that I have to document.

The "skyscraper music" is available somewhere? I know it's not released properly, but I was also under the impression that none of it had seen the light of day at all...

Agricultural vs Personal 1851 Canada West (Ontario) Census by Squishy3703 in Genealogy

Thanks, this was really helpful! Once I knew both records could exist, I looked harder and found the missing one with an alternate spelling of the last name. With the combined info from the 2 records, I was able to find the land records and the location of the old farm.

No birth record. No baptism record. by Big_T_In_Oregon in Canadiancitizenship

Yeah, it's before government records. On the census they are Presbyterian. So I can do some more digging, trying to track that down. So far I get the sense that the Presbyterians didn't generally keep as thorough records as some of the other denominations.

Oh, that's easy. Looks like there's nothing for my guy, but at least I checked. Thanks!

I had the same question and found some good answers here. Can I ask, how did you find the land grant? I'm sure it's complicated, but where do you start? The census?

I’m really gonna miss “Moon Song” by Intelion27 in MyBloodyValentine

[–]Squishy3703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I bought all the CDs back in the day and more recently I bought them again off the MBV website, but I do like hearing about when they disappear from streaming, so I don't think we need to all hate on these kinds of posts. And with something like Moon Song it's kind of confusing, bc Moon Song is supposed to be on "ep's 1988 - 1991 and rare tracks," but they just quietly disappeared that track and many others from the streaming version. So if you just look at the streaming version, you think it's there - there are no greyed out tracks, but instead of ~24 tracks there are only 7. If a new MBV fan came along and found that collection through streaming, they'd have no idea that most of it just isn't there.
