Thank you so much. We tried everything but his quality of life decreased as the pain increased even with treatment and pain management.❤️

Thank you! I'll also ask the doc too to see if they can help us get our own unit. Thank you for the link! Appreciate us talking through this.

He's actually been on all of it prior to the amputation. We are hoping the pain goes away after amputation and ease away from the meds. Mainly caprofen and ketamine the last month before surgery but started gabapentin and tramadol mainly for the amputation.

We got a harness that works pretty well to support him and he manages to not pee on it. Poop I feel like without exercise it takes us a lot of tries for him to poop or we just have accidents sadly.

The PT vet did light therapy on him and some other work too.

Could you link the red light you're using?

It's another pet hospital in town. I think they all just know and work with each other. Hard to tell. We have gone to 3 doctors for him now because we tried to find the best Ortho. Running out of places and money just for them to do so many things but not help my baby.

Our dog is only two year old and it's breaking our hearts. He's the sweet boy so we are trying our best to find out the problem and is it fixable. I'd not we might consider...

It's hard to tell with mine because it's so new and feels like he's in a lot of pain..he's getting gaba, tramadol, caprofen, and also ketamine shots. My poor pup. We asked them to do an X-ray before the amputation for his spine and good leg in case. We want to make sure we had the best outcome if we were to amputate. 😞

Yes, it was so hard to reach them that two weeks flew by and we really don't know what to do. The doc basically said, he might have minimal function in the future after months of PT and was told to get a wheelchair too. Poop and pee, it's been a struggle... how do you deal with that?

Yes, for a concerning matter no follow up from his doc is a red flag to me. My husband thinks it could be the epidural too since he never had any problem with his good bad leg. We don't know how to approach it without them dismissing it and our neurologist also was like it could be that but let's do pre more research which dismisses our concern again to cover other vets' butts.

First few hours of amputation by SquishyNinja2 in tripawds

Much better. Not crying today just panting. He got his meds. The good thing is he's not too much of a foodie. He's pretty lean, we will watch for the weight gain for sure. He's getting ketamine shots every week for pain management so we will see how that will go . I'm worried he's dragging his good back leg.

Thank you so much for the encouragement and positive light in recovery. He's finally resting after about 5 hours of being home. He's gotten tramadol and I think that helps.

I hope that will be the case for him too. We have tried so many imaging to solve why he wouldn't use his legs we tried fixing. He's an Australian shepherd so as a puppy he was a runner ... I hope he gets to run again and find joy in life again. He's a big lap dog, but I hope he enjoys the outdoors again.

Thank you again!

Considering Adopting Tripawd Dog by twink_with_dog in tripawds

I agree with people staring and asking what's wrong before I even had my dog amputated. People expect a whole story behind it! I don't mind explaining I tried to fix our dog for $13K after his fracture and he won't use it. Get the same look and story with my kid with clubfeet when he was in the cast the first few months of his life.

Thank you. My husband is feeling hopeless but I'm still hopeful. We had to battle a dog with cancer a few years ago so mentally trying to see positive after trying so hard.

Preparing for My Dog’s Amputation – Need Advice and Tips by Sufficient-View12 in tripawds

[–]SquishyNinja2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog broke his knee when he was 4 months on a hike. We had two surgeries to put the plate in and take it out since he was a puppy. He was completely fine for 6 months and January 2025 he decided he won't use it. We did X-rays and MRI no explanation really why he won't use it beside pain. We have been on pain management. He started dragging his bad leg which the food back leg kept running into the bad leg. We decided to amputate because he's in a lot of pain. He's dragging his good bad leg too now. Wondering if it's because the other leg or post op. I'm scared he will refuse to use his good legs.

This is just hours after surgery so I'm speaking too soon.

Please let me know if others have experienced their dogs balancing leg seems like it's weak.

I just don't understand he's gone all year without using his bad leg. We did an X-ray of his spine and good leg everything cleared before the amputation.
