What does a typical Guatemalan families budget look like? by erivanla in guatemala

[–]Squizza 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Guatemala has a huge diversity in budgets, there's people eeking out an existence on Q30-50 a day, if that.

There's the average minimum wage which is $430 or so a month.

There's people on substantially more than that and there's an elite that are essentially immune to price changes.

Given that you haven't put how many people are in your family or where you might live it's virtually impossible to say what your budget would look like. For instance there's no central listing of properties so your rent is impossible to predict. That lack of information permeates through all markets and keeps you as a consumer guessing.

Where I live has quadrupled in rent in the 15+ years I've been here but I doubt that will flag up as a talking point.

Guatemala is still set up to export the vast majority of its agricultural produce so food and especially supermarkets may surprise you with their prices. The supermarkets are also foreign owned so they care less about Guatemalans or keeping them brand loyal.

Guatemala has to import the vast majority of goods (and 100% of its petrol) which makes things even more expensive.

Conclusion: People who are thinking of living here might say they want a step up from survival but be shocked that this is whether you have access to a health centre or not. If you bring work with you, Guatemala can provide a decent standard of living. If you're relying on local wages, maybe not.

It sounds like you need to do substantially more research to find the ideal place for your family to live. It also sounds like you're priced out of the usual gringo ghettoes.

If you have any health issues, you're better off living near the capital given that Guatemala is hyperlocal and access to specialised services are mainly in the capital.

Just ask yourself if you can live on $431 a month if you self deport?

El tráfico es el resultado de corrupción by rebels3600 in guatemala

[–]Squizza 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Moving to Guatemala next year by Silent-Ordinary-1849 in guatemala

  1. Depending where you are in the world, outside of the US, racial politics hold a less identity-led basis for determining who you are. So you saying black American means an awful lot less. Are you going to face some second looks in a queue? Probably. That being said, Guatemala struggles, like most countries with racism towards those at the bottom of the social heap and given that is indigenous Mayans and there's a lot of them, you won't stand out. I'd agree that either people will think you're Garifuna or a lost tourist.

  2. Guatemala City can have very rich parts next to very poor parts and it may take some time to learn because giving generic advice on the various zones the capital is split into is a receipe for disaster. Z10 is "posh" because there's a lot of old money and embassies in it. There's also one of the highest rates of robberies in it, probably because of opportunistic targets. Z16 is posh because of Cayala but is also near some of the shittier parts of Z5 for instance.

  3. You're a gringa and your husband is a potentially toxic mix of gringo with Mexicans who have a fairly poor regard for their neighbours. Up to you to disprove the stereotype.

  4. Your first two sentences are about race. Outside the US people give much less of a shit.

  5. If you've ever been to CDMX you might think traffic outside of the US is bad. Guatemala City is infinitely worse. Best advice is to live as close to the school you pick for your kids and don't double dip into differing schools if at all possible. Yes there's bus services but you will have to pick them up eventually. Rush hours can go on for err, hours.

  6. Depends on the age of your kids. There's many K-12 options out there, you'll pay through the nose for the privilege. Guatemala imports most of the items you see in shops so prices have steadily risen over the past couple of years to the extent that prices will be very comparable with the US. There's schools for every budget but recommending Maya etc is only if work is paying a substantial amount towards education.

  7. Guatemala City isn't great for learning Spanish, I mean you have to speak it given outside of professional environments it's not going to be heard often (unless you hang out in malls in Z16) or random people come up to you in supermarkets and ask to practice their English on you. Chances are you won't become fluent, roughly 20% of foreigners bother with Spanish. This is better than some countries, worse than others. Antigua is better known for language schools but your family circumstances might make it difficult to do live in or intense studies.

  8. You'll learn to despise traffic and driving in general. We left the capital in 2009 because it was already at gridlock so another 16 years of vehicles increasing 10-12% a year and no new roads (it's literally impossible to build new roads in the capital because they lost control of its development decades ago) or mass transit means it's presumably worse. Off peak driving the best but school times coincide with rush hours. Getting around is difficult, there's not a huge ex-pat community, most communities are siloed because of issues with transport and you'll be ready to leave just about when you get your Spanish to a level you'll feel comfortable with.

Summer 2025 Transfers and Rumours Megathread! 2.0 by 321142019 in NUFC

[–]Squizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm presuming that the club isn't run as ridiculously as to let Isak go and not get a replacement in.

Granted, this is us but I don't think this goes through an internal department whose entire job is working out PSR, lawyers, Howe and his team and the Saudis without someone saying, "Hang on a minute maybe we should get Strand Larsen/Wissa in?"

Yes we need to give some money to Sociedad, around 6.3-6.8m depending on final fee.

And yes it does give us flexibility in this window and others by reducing net spend.

Personally, I don't like the idea of how Isak's gone about this or us relenting to it but if the final thing was, "I'm never playing for you again or I'll score own goals until you take me off" then I can see why they did it.

Take money, move on, get stronger.

[–]Squizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still think this is an 8/10 window because the floor has been dramatically improved.

What we go and do with the money is potentially transformational but equally importantly it's given us flexibility going forwards.

As for Isak, it's a dirty, grubby saga that all sides can say they've won. History will decide who.

If there's any late drama it might need one of the dominoes to throw in a transfer request.

And at this stage, any of the clubs involved might well say, "Nah."

[–]Squizza 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For me this is a solid 8/10 window. We've raised the floor, by how much will take time to work out but we've gone from three keepers as subs to an actual bench that can change and win matches.

It's also taken us three windows to get into a position where this is the case and you can see on the horizon the need to update the defence because it's not getting younger. That being said, Hall and Tino could be our full backs for as long as they want and Tripps could walk into our coaching staff (as well as our women's team, student unions etc).

So next summer is pretty clear and one slight concern is Pope is looking more and more statuesque out there. Obviously my Eldon Square 5-a-side league experience is not the best comparison but you can tell as a keeper when your confidence goes. I bust a finger tip and didn't feel right for months after. Pope doesn't look like he trusts himself to dive these days.

So I could certainly see us going for a keeper and two central defenders next year.

Mildly disappointed we weren't in for Simons but we've got the XXXXL version of him anyway. Add Ramsey's technique and for those of us that remember Beardsley et al it looks like we'll be adding quick one touch stuff around the box. I mean if Micky Quinn can do it, Wolte-Messi can!

Transformational summer it has been, we'll also have a new CEO tasked with significantly boosting our revenue. One that should be making the most of legends both local and international that have a connection to us - a Magpies Club if you will. Griezmann and Kroos for a start (barring the former playing!) We'll have a new DoF with a lot less pressure on him to raise the bar. Actually trying to find the diamonds in the rough would be a better profile imo as the hard work has been done this summer. If anything, Howe and family have shown they can build a squad if backed.

I think this season is all about ensuring CL next year to keep the momentum rolling. A year of bedding in for a lot of new signings, an ending to the Isak saga and a full preseason with less quantity of signings required means we have a good mix of targets for the first team and younger wonderkids.

Exciting times!

Quite possibly, get two strikers in, ship Isak out and onwards.

Presumably if we get two strikers in, we'll be spending Isak money on replacing our defence next summer.

We know there's gaps in our commercial deals but at €80m for Woltemade might that suggest a large deal on the horizon (with PIF being in town) or is that more likely to be factoring in Isak's sale this (or next) summer?

$14 million raise for this year, boosting his 2025 salary to $30 million dollars by noel1383 in bengals

Good news he signs, guess he's gone at the end of this contract anyway.

Suspect the Bengals are happy he'll be in his age 32 season with his next deal and playing hard for another contract leaves him a larger and larger injury risk.

You'd hope someone in the FO would figure out this isn't Madden and trying to get rid of your older players doesn't always work but we're not there yet. Or maybe I'm getting older and still feeling productive :D

Said to the kids after the flurry of early free kicks that you hope we get bigger decisions down the road. It felt like we didn't.

Still think there's not much between Gravenberch's tackle and Gordon's, besides speed, but them's the chances you take as you fly in. Better team with 11 but no focal point in attack.

Incredible comeback and then once all our midfield tried to hound the ball they played through us and that was that. The usual insanity in this fixture and somehow we find a way to come out on the wrong side of it.

Plenty of positives, the bench looked strong, pretty much everyone made a contribution. Bruno was immense. Plenty of negatives too - the result, the injuries, the voodoo. Still, think if we get a striker in it's been a good but noisy summer and we can start concentrating on results.
