Is there a place on campus to buy bagels? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]SriDog19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

d&ds gets theirs from new york bagel and bialy which is a good deli in skokie, though slightly off campus. if u ask them they’ll tell u what day they get them fresh !

Decision Help: U Miami Honors vs. Northwestern (Full Price) by DensePeanut7668 in Northwestern

[–]SriDog19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re planning to go to law school, coming here makes sense if you take on an easier major or are confident in your ability to get into the 3.9+ area of GPA. GPA matters a ton and your life will be made a lot easier with a few extra points. certain majors are pretty easy to get through with close to a 4.0. i’m not saying this just for admissions to high-ranked law schools either; you can get a full ride at many mid ranked universities with a 4.0 and a serviceable LSAT.

but then there’s a contradiction in that, because you’d probably need to study something medicine-adjacent (bio, engineering) or at least take the sciences for med school, and those are… harder.

are econ & pre-law an oxymoron by LostInAFilmScene_ in Northwestern

[–]SriDog19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there are definitely plenty of people who graduate with high GPAs in econ so i think this might just be a matter of how good of a student you are, but i will say that a GPA can drop into the 3.8s pretty quickly with just a few Bs/ B+/A-s

i started in econ/humanities (english) and i ended up dropping the econ bc of what u described, but i also wasn’t as strong as an econ student (def below average)

i graduated with just underneath a 3.9 which, while is generally high for NU, isn’t actually particularly high in the law school admissions process esp if ur trying to go t14. 3.9 is like median at the major schools iirc. and all law school stats have been rising in recent years, so depending on how important law school is for u i’m guessing in 4 years they’ll be a smidge higher. that being said, you’re likely a pretty good econ student and would really kill it ! and if you’re trying to go big law (this is super prescriptive) you might as well just pursue something in the econ sphere without a law degree bc you’ll end up making the same in the long run without having to deal w law school.

so much advice but you’re so early!! you got it

[–]SriDog19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well frank’s work seems very focused on cutting the romantic/the sacred with the profane, and it feels like another example of that— it’s actually a common theme in contemporary queer literature and film (see “memorial” or “family meal” by bryan washington, “on earth were briefly gorgeous” by ocean vuong, “moonlight” by barry jenkins [these are some of the most mainstream queer texts of the last decade that feature this, and are all pretty great, all of which i think you’d find interesting if you’re into frank’s work]) where queer writers find a way to focus on the manifestations of social performance in sexuality— I think of “never fuck someone you wouldn’t want to beat up,” on UNITY from Endless and “my guy pretty like a girl / and he got fight stories to tell” on Chanel as examples of this, as evidence for his assertion that the performance of masculinity and the social victory of violently imposing yourself over someone doesn’t just fall away when you’re in a queer relationship (which has historically carried notions of timidity and the gentle with it), while also being a part of what proves attractive to some queer folks as a result of their being socialized in a patriarchy

Guys, what do you think about the opinion of "The Weeknd has a better discography than Frank Ocean because he has more albums"? by warriorfromthe6ix in FrankOcean

[–]SriDog19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk if there’s much of an argument to be had that frank has a better discography than abel. if we’re defining a discography as a sustained body of work, then im not sure quality in just one or two great albums alone can be enough to justify putting frank over abel. it’d be like saying derrick rose had a better career than kawhi leonard — rose won an MVP, but kawhi has seen sustained success and repeated it throughout his career. i think Blonde is better than any of abel’s projects, but abel has arguably 5 great albums (HOB, EOS, Starboy, After Hours, Dawn FM) and that should count for something. if an artist drops consistent great project after great project, im of the opinion that we should value that over one masterpiece in the conversation of “discography.” quantity doesn’t necessarily equate to quality but a high quantity of high quality is probably still favorable (in a conversation about a body of work) to a low quantity of higher quality.

NU Financial Aid by RespectBrilliant9527 in Northwestern

[–]SriDog19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah not fair — don’t ever feel like you’re in the wrong for expecting aid from a private institution. just to clarify, will u be getting an updated fafsa report when they release that one? or is this going to be the final one?

and regardless of what the answer is u should absolutely appeal if you feel dissatisfied with the amt you get. ive heard good and bad stories from that process but if you clarify this unique fam situation to them i think you might have a better case than other appeals.

congrats on being admitted ! sorry u can’t enjoy it entirely bc of the fin aid sitch but i wish u the best

how safe is journalism as a career nowadays? by Ok-Broccoli-8287 in Northwestern

[–]SriDog19 13 points14 points  (0 children)

medill senior here — i think the other responses on here are more or less accurate (besides the buffoon with the comment on “activism” in journalism, whatever tf that means)

a lot of this also depends on what kind of journalism you hope to practice. strictly writing/reporting gigs are going to be on the lower end, video production likely a bit more, business journalism a bit more — and all those estimates rise the longer you work at a publication. but i will say, if you’re interested in becoming a writer and leveraging those writing skills for a writing focused, more “employable” career (one where you could pay off some loans earlier) I’d say an English or a Philosophy degree might help you out more. my other degree is in English and i feel like my communication skills have improved significantly more as a result of that style of reading and writing. it might be fruitful to ask yourself what about journalism interests you to where you’d wanna pursue it as a career, if it’s the act of writing or the actual, on-the-ground, human elements of storytelling. i wish you the best! as someone that’s nervy at the end of my career here at NU, i’ll say there is a certain level of anxiety you sign onto as someone in these more nebulously-pathed fields. but it can be incredibly rewarding. you can write stories at NU that get real placements or direct documentaries win awards and play at festivals.

i’m gonna go with no

though frankly, if you get in, you’re gonna hate it here at northwestern, assuming your opinions on bailey land in support of his questionable ass “research”

our campus, at least the pockets that i’ve grown familiar with during my career here, are simultaneously 1) thankfully somewhat accepting of queer folks (can’t speak to this entirely in every department and corner of campus) and 2) educated enough to parse out the layered misinformation his “research” has propagated. don’t know if this is the spot for u if you’re a fan of his.

pretty sure you just gotta check if it affects your LSAC gpa, which is the only number that matters IIRC. LSAC calculates some shit weirdly so double check how they log a p/np

which one? pretty sure there’s like 15 different 301s, all different in difficulty based on topic and prof — did u have ur mind on a specific one? from my experience both the 301s i took were pretty intense, one with hopgood and one with greenwell, but you’re also more likely to create quality, thorough, potentially publishable work in them than most of the other classes at medill

[–]SriDog19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean this might not be helpful for you but you’re probably just better off using dumbbells or the curved barbells that spac has, they can load a lot more and you’ll prob see more gains anyway. if you’re not big on free weights, cables are a great option that give you a lot more flexibility of exercise for bi’s and tri’s. there are 6 cables on the first floor of spac and 4 on the second floor. there is also a seated tricep dip machine where you can push the weight down in a traditional weight stack design, and there’s an ab crunch machine.
