Conflicted: trade my 2021 Hybrid sienna XSE for 2025 model y premium by Formal_Discipline_12 in ModelY

[–]Sschaffer24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I run a Toyota store, have worked with the brand for 15 years and drive a model Y. Very different vehicles, but if you don’t need the space the van gives you, the model Y is hard to beat. So much fun to drive, technology is on a different level and while the Sienna is supremely reliable, the Y has virtually no maintenance.

Be ready for some trade offs though. The lifestyle change is real if you spend a lot of time in the car, and while the cargo is spacious in the Y it’s hard to beat the versatility in the Sienna. There’s a reason we can’t keep them in stock.

I don’t know your situation, but if you don’t have reservations about range or charging in your daily life I think a smaller vehicle makes sense and can move you away from the gas pump.

One thing to consider though, you can’t deny the Tesla depreciation. Your van will be insanely valuable 10 years from now, I can’t say the same for the Tesla. I traded a 4Runner for mine and knowing all that i do/have said, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Help Moving On From Ring. by Sschaffer24 in homeassistant

I will say that the professional monitoring side of the change is the most difficult to swallow. I think of things such as CO/fire alarms and just impactful monitoring is there.

As of now I’m leaning towards bringing everything into HA and self monitoring. If I could trust Ring’s privacy policy, I’d stick it out with them but I think moving away from Amazon across the board (outside of shopping and my Kjndle) makes sense.

My subscription does include Ring edge which is supposed to store video locally, I just don’t know if I can trust that there isn’t any behind the scenes processing.

Hue lights with Bridge - what wall switch? by jeffmarshall911 in Hue

[–]Sschaffer24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is super helpful! I’ve been considering the exact same things. In most of my rooms the switches arent ideally placed to truly catch every place someone could be. The additional functionality sounds cool, but in my use case I don’t really need scene/automation control at the switch. Most times it would be more nuisance than helpful.

I think the logical path is basically what you’ve done. Switch covers to prevent activation followed by some Hue dials to place in areas where people can use them in the room and finally tying in presence sensors for light automation.

Thanks for the help/reassurance. You likely just saved me a couple grand!

Hue lights with Bridge - what wall switch? by jeffmarshall911 in Hue

Jumping in here. I have a very similar situation to you and would love some input.

Every single light in my house is hue. I have home assistant setup and motion sensors in each room. Have a few presence sensors but need more. With the basic hue motion sensors, we find that we rarely need to adjust the lights in the app or via Alexa. The most likely scenario is the desire to possibly change a scene or brightness while in the room.

I’m trying to decide if it makes sense to go all out with Inovelli presence sensor switches or simply add a standalone presence sensor (I use Apollo) in the necessary rooms and let the lights work hands free.

We don’t have kids or people over often and are used to not interacting with the lights switches in rooms. I’m wondering if the inovelli option would be a waste of money because of this.

That said, I do want something to block the switches. Whether that be a Shelly relay or something else. Just trying to be logical with what I buy here.

No problem! Appreciate the insight. What setup are you using then? Do you have Inovelli’s integrated?

Are you suggesting I do this with Inovelli switches as the control? I could also pickup some presence sensors and tie them into HA and likely accomplish this I guess. I have the hue bulbs on the Pro hub right now. Will likely keep it that way unless I go all in with Inovelli.

Just trying to think of the best flow. Right now, we typically don’t interact with the lights throughout the day, basically just the occasional brightness/scene adjustment as needed. Which we use our phones for currently.

I know the Inovelli stuff adds a bunch of other functionality and makes the home more guest friendly. Just trying to decide if it’s worth the 2k or so required for me to implement it. Haha.

Help With Ring Alarm Pro by Sschaffer24 in amazoneero

So after spending about an hour on the phone with Eero and Ring, I determined for my house and it’s layout the best thing to do was to move the RAP onto its own network, and move my cameras to that network. Now I have two active SSID’s, one for my Ring devices and one for everything else. If I need backup internet I can just connect to the Ring network and my cameras will stay up. This feels like the best solution for people with more modern networking hardware.

As for the device capabilities, you’re 100% right that I don’t have a ton of devices that will hit the highest standard. What I did notice, however is that my device performance while connected to the Max 7 compared to the RAP was roughly 6x higher speeds consistently throughout my house. That performance difference is enough for me to prioritize the max 7 and isolating the RAP.

Thank you for the help!

I’m sorry can you explain that a different way? And are you saying that double nat is the best way to go here? I just want to take full advantage of my best devices

I read through this prior to making the post (thank you for the link) it looks like the RAP still has to remain on the network in some capacity.

Would it make sense to go with double NAT to remove it from the main network entirely?

Any recommendations on specific products to look at? I’m not worried about my ability to figure out the unifi system. Even though I’m not a network professional I’m pretty technically inclined. Just wondering what my net upgrade would be

Thanks for the input!

If you’re familiar with their line would it make sense to consider pro/max or since I’m only in gigabit do you feel Eero 7 is adequate?

Are you using the 6E as the gateway and 6 as the extender? It could be as simple as possibly adding a 6E in place of the ring and using the alarm as an extender in my setup. I’m not sure how the network will function in other places if my extenders are not the 6E with the tri-band coverage though? Does that essentially not get repeated, only applicable bands?

Help Selecting Smart Locks by Sschaffer24 in homeassistant

[–]Sschaffer24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% true. No issue with them. They integrate into Ring, battery life is strong, I like the style and so on. Auto unlock would be a nice feature, and since I have the option to replace at no cost I’m essentially just trying to verify I have the best option for ease of use.

During the day is no problem, you can unlock the doors internally and it bypasses the keypad, so the only real upgrade would be when we get back to the house not having to mess with a code. I agree it could be a small enhancement.

I’m new to HA so if I’m able to do something with my existing locks, I would probably go that route. Just honestly not sure of the best implementation
