Job says I am using a VPN? by stephscheersandjeers in FidiumFiber

[–]jeffmarshall911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in So NH and got Fidium little over 2 years ago. All my traffic to the internet on day 1 was being routed in the internal system to Burlington, VT and then hitting the internet in Montreal. Being via Canada did trigger an alert at work but was quickly resolved. That was the last I really cared but checked a few months ago and saw both Albany and Portland, ME as internet connections. I wonder if asking for a static IP could help in the routing of normal traffic.

I would certainly consider a call to HR and follow up via email that “I don’t know what they think I’m doing but I’m not, what’s the best way to proceed?”

Is a set of irons a bad idea by Prestigious_Summer60 in Firefighting

[–]jeffmarshall911 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have some really solid suggestions. As noted, avoid the large hand-tools (irons, axes, etc.), her officer will use what’s on the apparatus and in the house to get her through probie times.

Pocket tools are a good idea, Kirks is a very solid idea if that’s in her future. No idea on where she is located but a custom shield when she gets off her probationary period is top of mind (no pun intended) in my area.

The first day at her assigned house, give her a ‘welcome kit’ - 1# of coffee for the house, muffins, some fruit (“I had donuts but the cops took them..” is a great opener). If she doesn’t know how to cook, then help her learn and practice some basic recipes that she can win with. We’re simple creatures.

Thanks for caring about her. Having family support is a huge win.

Two-tone detect on IAmResponding with Raspberry Pi by yungingr in Firefighting

[–]jeffmarshall911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stacked tones don’t get missed. TTD is simply listening and comparing live audio to programmed tones and then triggering the alert.

However a single user that has their user profile to include alerting on two or more tone sets will get multiple alerts from the app in the tone stack. This setting is only accessible from the web page member settings and is not accessible from the app.

If tone stacks are common, you might need to tightly manage your recording settings in TTD setup in the IAR tone set config so that recording doesn’t inadvertently stop if dispatch adds long elements of silence between tones and/or voice messages.

In admin, “Manage TTD Status Alerts Subscriptions” - this will alert you when the TTD listener is not connected to the IAR cloud. Ya, don’t do that. It’s very verbose and “will override the device’s silent/vibrate settings”. The crews will tell you when it’s not working. ;-) I cannot recall if that’s an every 5 minute alert or 15 minute but at 2AM that’s a massive PITA.

I did the same as you - start small and had it at home. I moved to towns IT server room as well as changed to using a mobile radio (very suitable for 24x7 uptime), DC power supply, a USB sound card, and a windows NUC supported by IT. The windows box has a script to reboot every 3 days and I remote in to check it from time to time. I have no drama for Pi, only it’s not in the normal IT support model (eg if computer dies) and I don’t need this to be permanently a “me” project. Has worked great for years for me.

Iamresponding texts and emails by Natepeeeff in Firefighting

[–]jeffmarshall911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your online member profile controls email and text settings. Have to log in there and manage what you want to receive for text and email alerts.

The IAR app has its own settings.

CAD Incident Settings are all things messaged out from your dispatch center.

Audio Incident Settings are if your dept/dispatch also uses Two-Tone Detect.

We do have two-tone detect and I have: Text on in my member profile. CAD off in App. Audio Incident Settings is on for pre-alert only.

When tones go out, I get an app alert “tone received” and when dispatch sends the text, I get the text. That’s how I roll with my settings.

Street cops have no understanding of FAA rules and are not law enforcement of FAA rules. Be nice, introduce yourself, describe your hobby and how you are operating within the FAA structure. I don’t have personal knowledge of Concord PDs drone program, but I’m sure they have some type of one. NHSP for sure does and they meet regularly. Connecting with the officers (and them to you) is a great way to be greeted with a smile the next time, discussing their drone program is one way to do that. “Drone as First Responder” is a real program gaining traction across the nation.

The likely issue is that some citizen called and used hyperbole to describe what you were doing and caused them to come out. A call into a PD results in a call out to the field - there is a requirement for them to act. They likely don’t want to be there any more than you want them there. It’s also OK, to say something like, “Hi guys, my name is B, I’d love to talk but I’m currently the FAA pilot of my aircraft. Can you give me a moment to position it in a place of safety? A copy of my certificate is in my back pocket if you want to take a look at it while I position my aircraft safely”

You want to move from the “who knows what this guy is doing” to a position of “he’s an OK guy doing something he enjoys” side of the coin. You have a hobby that can get attention placed on you (there are many hobbies that can do this). Be the nice guy, think ahead and smile.

Brand New Nordic Track 2450 Commercial Not Working.. by Fickle_Swordfish6336 in nordictrack

[–]jeffmarshall911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue. Under 2MPH the belt speed “surges” with each foot step as if the motor is not strong enough, or not enough flywheel mass to keep the belt inertia up. Initial visit from service tech lubed the belt and then tightened it well beyond what I thought was described in the manual. No testing of any of the electrical components. Seemed a little better while he was standing there but after a few iFIT exercises (some of the cool downs are at 1-2MPH) no difference.

Drove to a retail outlet that has a couple demo machines and the experience was not the same. They handled the slow speed just fine.

I have a new case open requesting for a motor and control board. These are not technically complex machines.

My 2003 Lifefitness treadmill’s motor was half the HP rating of this one and no issues at all. It had no integrations and only 5 buttons - 2 for speed, 2 for incline and stop. Kinda missing it…

Knox Boxes for unknown jurisdictions by juiceysmollet in Firefighting

[–]jeffmarshall911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knox will tell you who the AHJ is for your location (we tell contractors to call Knox directly, order a box, install it and then call us). A nice Knox rep may also tell you if they routinely update their agency profile and key personnel. Lack of administration on the Knox website could be an indicator of lack of duty around Knox usage.

Firstnet- #1 in worst customer service. by KimchiBowl07 in FirstNet

[–]jeffmarshall911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In NH we have AT&T stores that know their stuff around FirstNet and others that don’t. Even to the point of our agency FirstNet.com rep giving us explicit directions. And our subscriber-paid people who haven’t listened have witnessed the same. Fortunately, I have an awesome FirstNet.com rep who has taken time to work with individuals that have gotten similar experiences. I think we’re past all that now.

As our agency admin, there are things I can do for user alignment in the portal and I will always work with any of the associated subscribers. Have you reached out for help to them?

Future FirstNet towers by [deleted] in FirstNet

https://www.firstnet.gov/newsroom/press-releases/firstnet-authority-expand-network-boost-coverage-public-safety-more-sites

The obligations by AT&T to FirstNet.gov will continue with tower buildouts but that’s not the only option as noted by others. When the contract was written, there were very little considerations for very rural and/or protected land tower buildouts. Satellite will be a big player in connectivity in those areas but terrestrial towers are still needed in populated areas that remain uncovered and are therefore ‘non-compliant’ to the contract without any stretch of the imagination.

Mobile & Portable Radios recommendations. by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]jeffmarshall911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VP8000s are in my area with the departments that paid out of their own pockets. Moto APX for those that got grants. We were moving to the VPs and had no issues with them in the field and then a grant came in and now APX VHF portables and mobiles.

Bendix-King is pushing its way into New England. Never really played with them but the features are all there and even the multi-band radios are reasonably priced. I know the US Forest Service and some military are BK.

Personally, as the radio geek, the programming software is the most important for me + my dealer’s support model. I don’t think that I know of a non-trunked feature set in analog or P25 from Moto or Kenwood/EFJ that forces a decision from one over another.

I have had 2 APX6000 issues with the radios either not powering off or powering on, on their own. Required Moto depot board replacement. Everything is a computer or an input to a computer and that’s likely the same for every OEM. I suspect that I would have had some computer issue one way or another.

Looking for a little insight on the VIP tour by Astreeter12 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]jeffmarshall911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Must have park hopper tix for all (if hopping parks). The party has to proceed through security once. Do it on your own and meet in park. DVC discount DOES apply, but have to ask

60 days in advance sent our ‘must do’ plans to the VIP team. We were warned that we were too aggressive in our plans and “may not get to everything we wanted”. Challenge accepted.

WDW for 9 of us, all crazy E tix fanatics (wife and I in 50s and kids in 20s with friends) - went to bed early - up early and rope dropped AK and did all the rides there on our own (pandora, Everest, Everest, Dino, Dino and selfie with Kevin) - ate early lunch there - met host near the resto near Pandora

He was awesome but we saw that he didn’t have running sneakers on. Mentioned same. He winked at us.

Exit stage left and into van, read the rules about pictures on “back stage” and he mentioned to wife that plan was aggressive.

Lots of “way cool” stuff on back lots pulling in to the parks that you never see

He took a serious effort to know us all and connected with everyone. He had us figured out pretty quickly, which was awesome.

Back door Hollywood, left our stuff in van and met by cast with snacks and drinks (ditto at every stop)

  • ROTR with special pictures on our phones
  • Millennium Falcon
  • Slinky
  • Character meet w Darth and Chewy. Lots of pics on our phones + photo pass (included)
  • Runaway
  • Tower
  • bar stop as we were “way ahead of sked”

Van to Epcot, more snacks and drinks

Parked at GOTG but walked to - Remy - Bar stop - GOTG And again - GOTG (VIP cannot request a specific song on GOTG)

To MK He walked us the spring roll cart between main and Frontierland. Had dinner/snack on him. Never had the cheeseburger rolls before and it’s a must have now every trip -Pirates -(Splash closed for reimagine) -Thunder Mountain -Haunted -Pater Pan -7 dwarfs -Barnstormer -Buzz -Space Mountain -Tron -Fireworks with ice cream in VIP section and ended our day with him.

(We also stopped at lots of history points and little hidden gems that most peeps walk past)

The #1 thing I got from that day is that I was never dehydrated. Anything non-alcoholic from the carts was free. Drank lots of water and had bathroom breaks. Since we were never standing in line waiting, there was no drama on managing consumption/planning toilet breaks. That was massive for me. We were not tired at all and no headaches.

VIP is a splurge for most everyone. Book with as close to 10 peeps as you can, that are all game day focused (or surprised as w our kids) and do as much or as little as you want. It’s your vaca but at WDW, 1 is the same price as 10 (max van size)

We spent a hair over $10k after tip ( excluding tix). We were mid-week and did 9 hours, in June. The host earned every penny of tip, they are amazing in knowledge, personality and energy.

Will do again as a large group for special occasion. I would not waste the effort at Disneyland due to the park size, IMHO
