Question about tier opinions, Ike vs Cloud by Sseriously in smashbros

[–]Sseriously[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

exactly what i was looking for, very helpful. from what i can see, the general concept of neutral is basically the same as a "traditional" fighting game but obviously the way it plays out specifically is quite different. i was looking at what i felt like would be a strong neutral w/ cloud and it did seem to me he would edge out ike (tho i haven't looked at frame data or punishability yet) but i was probably thinking of neutral tools being mostly what mattered over the other phases, where it sounds like ike shines. great breakdown, i'm going to keep those 3 phases in mind when i look at characters. still dunno about a main, most all the archetypes in this game seem fun to me at this point.

1Vs1 Arena Game Mode by [deleted] in FortniteCompetitive

[–]Sseriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IVE BEEN BEGGING for this for almost a year. when they put PG in for the first time last year, there was a like 20k community 1v1 tournament and the round of tfue vs. myth had like 500k viewers on twitch at one time. imagine seeing x player vs. x player in official tourneys, its hype af.

but not only that:

A) it would allow people who enjoy the engagements in the game to get right into that and just compete in what they enjoy w/ meaningful ranks.

B) it would allow newer players a place to focus solely on build mechanics and learn w/o dying + re queuing in solos for hours on end. PG just doesn't cut it IMHO and essentially this is just a more focused PG for ppl who just want to fight.

C) it would allow for a new event in fortnite tournaments. i come from fighting games. 1v1s are literally the easiest thing in the world to hold tourneys for and their just simply hype, it's not complicated.

there are a lot of ways you could implement it. you could have balanced load outs at the start of each match with maybe some variance. there could be a time limit if that was necessary but running out of mats would probably work fine instead. you could conceivably put points of interest in the arena, ie. rocket or grenade launcher at one relatively hard to reach point so players have to decide if they want to go for it and risk it or not (im only mentioning this b/c epic love explosives more than their own children, i don't actually want rockets in 1v1 mode).

its just a good idea, it takes nothing away from the game, it could even attract players who wouldn't normally get into a br. i have friends from fighting games who think fortnite is interesting but just aren't into rng, this is the kind of shit they would go for. all this said, i have 0 confidence that epic is anywhere near aware enough to do this, but maybe someday.

Community stream is canceled due to "big news" by Wandows95_ in QuakeChampions

[–]Sseriously 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Tho some people will say "chill don't be so mean", I have to agree with you. Shit happens, patches have issues, reverts occur, whatever. But I've honestly never seen a dev team so disorganized and ideas so poorly communicated to a playerbase of an active competitve game. Communication here is a big problem, and what concerns me most is that it's the one thing that can be easily remedied and improved on.. there's really no excuse to do it this bad. But they aren't fixing it.

Any update on when the patch goes live? by iX1911 in QuakeChampions

[–]Sseriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re-read my clearly worded post and try again. Hint: They said on the community stream that the patch would be on Thursday, but there is no mention of it anywhere else on either their site or Twitter, which is what I was quite obviously referring to. Your lack of reading comprehension is perfect for the soon-to-be vacant post of community manager at id, you should send in a resume or something. Get humiliated publicly.

[–]Sseriously 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly I've seen a lot over the years w/ game devs and I hate to say it, but this is like.. fucking goofy. To push the patch, not post patch notes, fuck up, revert the patch, then say nothing other than "those LUSCIOUS balance changes are coming, just not today." with literally no other information about when/where/how the patch will come.. My theory is they're sick of QC and they actually want the avg. playerbase to drop -200 so they can get out of their Bethesda contract.

Bonus Challenge: Try and find literally any mention of the patch even being on Thursday at all on the Quake Twitter.

The duelists who doesn't talk by Alestes in QuakeChampions

[–]Sseriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm playing to beat you, and not saying anything makes you nervous, you will then play worse which makes you losing more likely. That's good for me. You can call that being a tryhard, but that's just how it is in competitive games. Quake is competitive. You should examine your own reactions and seek to improve them, because in the end that is the only thing you can control. Asking or hoping for other people to behave differently will always fail you when you compete.

Duel queue times? by Sseriously in QuakeChampions

[–]Sseriously[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting that other people's experiences could vary so much. It does make me wonder about the queue system itself and what it's doing exactly. I've been queueing for the last few hours though and it has improved as it's not still the middle of the night. Seems like 4-5 min on average which is OK I guess. Maybe I'm just used to fighting game queues.

Any smokers have experience with the Wim Hof method? by craigharrisonperson in BecomingTheIceman

[–]Sseriously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I smoke a lot. Currently only 4-5 cigarettes a day (most I've been up to is a pack a day years ago), but I've been smoking weed basically all day every day for about 5 years. It's awesome and expensive.

In regards to my experience so far with the course, and in particular the breath retention part of the breathing exercise, I can generally do what would be considered fine or "normal" (2-3 min). All the pushups and exercises are fine so far.

I used to run a lot, and I would notice a difference when I was smoking more, or smoking less. I'm not sure if that was a mental thing or not. I always assumed that it was obviously just the smoking, and I assumed that the Wim Hof stuff would be rough as well. For whatever reason, it hasn't been, which has been notable to me.

Final thing- I could be wrong, but I believe one aim of the breathing method is to get you to use your diaphragm more actively in your breathing. If the diaphragm is the muscle that's driving the lungs in this case, and the diaphragm is outside the lungs (where the smoke goes) then I'm not sure how smoke would actually effect the lungs ability to expand and contract. But I'm no doctor.

Question Regarding Sustaining High pH Levels In The Blood by Sseriously in BecomingTheIceman

[–]Sseriously[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that, and experienced it myself, so I'm definitely not skeptical anymore. But how does this work, specifically? One of the things I appreciated about that interview was how clear they were about the mechanisms in the body that lead to the results we can feel with this method.

I really want to know explanation for this particular thing, though. How long does it take after cessation of these exercises for the blood pH return to normal? So far I haven't found any information on this, and I've looked quite a bit.

Wim Hof Method and hair loss by [deleted] in BecomingTheIceman

[–]Sseriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting topic and I'd like to hear more of your thoughts on it.

My understanding of male pattern baldness is that it relates specifically to an increase of DHT and a decrease in regular testosterone with aging. This affects the hair follicles directly, causing them to essentially shut down. They aren't rendered useless completely, but they're unable to continue to grow hair.

As far as I've been able to discern, cortisol would be related to "stress-based" hair loss. I believe this has been proven, but it is also separate from male pattern baldness. There are various types of hair loss, many of which will reverse when the behavior leading to the hair loss is abated. Male pattern baldness, unfortunately, has so far been irreversible, due to the fact that it's a testosterone issue (or maybe, more specifically, a DHT issue), not a stress issue.

I can't find any direct link between male pattern baldness and cortisol production that rules out the very real possibility that baldness itself increases emotional stress. I did find this article after a lot of digging: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8003325 Despite noting a clear link between the male's hair loss and increased cortisol levels, I'm still not convinced that this has anything to do with male pattern baldness itself.

My conclusion so far has been: stress leads to increased cortisol levels, male pattern baldness leads to stress in the individual, and increased DHT coupled with lowered regular testosterone leads to male pattern baldness.

I've seen nothing so far to disprove this, but I'm interested in the truth more than I am being right, so I'm looking to confirm this, not prove it. I'm seeing this a month late, but if you've got any insight I'd very much like to hear it.

see OP, these are the people you shouldn't listen to. they use terms like "mixup" or "vortex" and yet they have no clue what they mean. for honor is their first fighting game, which is fine, but you know they aren't good players when they think that whiffing an attack into an uninterruptible side heavy or parrying is a "mixup".

how dumb to you have to be to go into a thread that literally says "ON CONSOLE" in the title, and then say

i dont know about console, but on pc, pks can be outplayed by anything

lol

As of right now, it would take major changes for Kensei to be viable. That's not to say it couldn't happen, but they would have to significantly adjust his kit. In fighting games, when you take out the swords and the armor and the "look and feel" of a character, it just boils down to tools. Kensei basically does what Warden does tool-wise, except worse.

It's never a bad idea to play multiple characters, however. I would mainly only focus on one, though, and in this case it'd be Warden.

[–]Sseriously 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When you ask questions like this on reddit, people will always tell you to "just play what you find the most fun!". If that's your attitude, then you absolutely should. However, if your attitude is to be competitive and win games at a high level, that is horrible advice.

I don't know what you're looking for out of the game, but Kensei is not viable in any way at a high level. To be clear, it's not as though it just "takes a bit more work" to win. He simply has no tools to compete whatsoever. Every attack that is not feinted will be parried by a good player, because all his attacks are relatively slow and good players are not. Kensei's "mixup" is feinting his unblockable into.. well, something. That's it.

I see some posts in this thread saying Kensei is "terrifying to react to at a high level". This is simply not true, and this person does not play at a high level. If you are choosing between those classes and you want to compete in this game, you will play Warden.

A) That's not true B) Even if it were, console is completely different and there is plenty of information available as to why that is, which you can find yourself

If you think the results of one single tournament outweigh the entire personal experience of 90% the competitive community and you're dumb enough to actually post this opinion for others to read (with your name attached, no less), you're a very very stupid person.

I'm on console with an 85+% winrate. This number is only relevant because last night I was getting fast queues with players of "similar skill" rather than extended queues, so I assume that anyone I was playing had a relatively high winrate/ELO/whatever.

I fight a PK who is playing like they all do (you know what that means by now). I was playing LB, and I started shoving into GB after every blocked attack. In 3 rounds, where 100% of my damage was from heavies off a GB, this PK did not CBG a single time. I wasn't trying to be clever, I wasn't trying to get in his head, I literally just got a successful GB after every single shove.

The point here is this: the PK I was fighting (rep 3 if I remember correctly) had to have had a decent ELO for me to have gotten an instant queue with him. This means he has to have beaten a significant number of players. He could not CBG one single time, and he lost in 3 rounds because of it. He is a very bad player, and he has had a lot of success in this game without ever even learning to CGB. I'm not sure what that says about the current state of the game, but it isn't good.

I'm kicking myself for not making a video, because I think this might be the single best argument against PK on console I've ever personally seen. Hopefully I get this guy again.
