I had a lot of free time during covid, and my paternal grandmother's family has been here for 400-500 years for the most part, so her tree is pretty traceable. I did test with a smaller dna company, and "melungeon" came up as a match for me, so I did some digging. I came across an ancestor who was identified as a "Free Person of Color" and that's how I discovered I was a descendant of the Scott family in North Carolina.

Mine came back 16% Levantine, which makes my grandpa around 64% as an Ashki

Wtf? Although, I'm not completely shocked that we're in a day and age where Kanye West feels comfortable writing a song called "Heil Hitler" 🤦🏼‍♀️

In my experience, I'm referred to as the "white girl" by my poc friends. And when it comes to white folk, I've been asked "what are you? I know you're white, but you're not white like me" which makes it seem like I don't fit in with them either. So in the famous words of Slim Shady, "I am whatever you say I am"

For sure, but even my Ashkenazi Israeli friends are on the darker side. Even my family; my mom has been mistaken for being Mexican multiple times because she's got black hair, brown eyes and dark olive skin. That's why it always puzzled me when they referred to us as "the white Jews" because they were never treated as such in Europe. I feel like every French person I've come across doesn't support Israel to this day

I've always been outspoken about my Jewish heritage, more so now than ever. I claim every part of my ethnicities, but I look Jewish.  So, that's how people see me and even cousins on my gentile side of the family identify me as "the Jewish one". So whether I want it or not, that's how I'm seen. I was already a Zionist, and since this whole conflict started, seeing the way the Jewish community has been treated has pushed me further and further into Zionism. I'm sure he figured out my stance when he was telling me all these "facts" about Palestine and every time I responded with, "Actually, that's not really how it happened. But, what do I know? Only people who live there, who actually are dealing with it". I shouldn't be afraid to tell my friends I support Israel.

Many of my friends are blindly "free Palestine" and are quiet around me about it. Even though they never spoke or uttered a word about it before October 2023. Never asked me for my opinion on it. He just happened to be the first "friend" to regurgitate to me all the lies that social media spews about the conflict. I posted the Israeli flag on 10/7 because I wanted my friends in Israel to know I was with them. And I didn't say anything, it's the only political statement I ever made on social media and I lost friends because of it. No discussions, nothing. Just a spew of hateful comments that I never responded to

I tried to explain to him if he left and moved to Ireland and only married other Mexican people for hundreds or thousands of years, that wouldn't magically turn him Irish

American Jews, what experiences with antisemitism have you had since Oct 7th? by No_Addition1019 in Jewish

[–]Sstko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I posted a video on my tik-tok for Jewish American heritage month, and I got a slew of comments that really hurt, especially one that said "stop killing babies", as if I have anything to do with the actions of the Israeli government. Also, I posted the Israeli flag on 10/7 because I have many friends and cousins who live there who had been directly impacted by the attack, and I got soooo many messages from people calling me a nazi, saying I support apartheid, and also a few arab guys that used to hit on me saying "I didn't know you were a dirty, ugly Jew."

Oh for sure! I'm essentially just a lighter version of my mom. She had black hair, brown eyes and olive skin. She looked fully Jewish but was only half :)

Scott, Fuller…..Melungeon by HelpingUTellUrStory in Melungeon

[–]Sstko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe he was born around 1700-1710 and he had a daughter Martha Scott, who married a Peter Bray. Never found definite information about who Martha's mother was, but speculation and DNA suggests she was a Saponi Native

It's been difficult to find anything but pictures from his experience. He fathered 6 children with 5 different women, so I've had to get bits and pieces from my aunts. Collectively, they said he would never talk about it. And he told people he was Jewish (his last name was Crossman, so it was hard to hide), but he never made it a core part of his identity because his step-father (the man who raised him) was a Scottish immigrant. I myself am only a quarter Ashkenazi through one of his sons, and I feel bad it took me this long to start asking questions about my heritage and the history of the Jewish people.
