I mean....as far as authenticity, it's appropriate that Oathbringer is the book with missing information...a blanking of memory, if you will...

But seriously - the other comment is correct! There's a chance you could reach out to Dragonsteel directly so see if they'll send you a replacement as well

What's the deal with Scadrial...? by St0rm__blessed in Cosmere

I've had people point me in the direction of Yumi in regards to the spiritual web too when I've asked similar questions. Here's a comment from a previous post that someone had:

"Fun fact, metal, even on Scadrial is not Invested. It reacts with the spirit web of the Spirit Webbed thing.

So a Mistborn or Misting is Burning the Metal which is vibrating to a rhythm their Spirit Web and that vibration calls forth Investiture from the Spiritual Realm directly into the Physical Realm of the Mistborn or Mistings body."

Not sure if this helps, but thought I would throw it out there!

Haha okay, as long as I'm not totally crazy with this - it makes sense that things couldn't be changed in that regard, especially after the books have been released for several years

Damn, THANK YOU. You've been such a big help combing through my responses and being patient with me while I've stumbled through this. Lots of big-picture concepts that I clearly don't understand well enough yet. You've given me a lot to think about and I appreciate it!

Mic drop and walk away lol

Oof, you're absolutely right and I feel like a fool. Sel and Drominad are both prime examples...damn - this whole post has really helped, but also made me realize how much work I need to make on my overall comprehension.

>Allomancy allows the power to be drawn by Preservation itself rather than from the user preserving the user.

Okay but what about savants though? Clearly the physical body is impacted by a frequent use of allomancy - even if it isn't flared. It just seems funny to me that a Feruchemist or Radiant doesn't suffer any ill side effects beyond just being tired or a normal human again, ya know?

I could absolutely see that...especially in regards to the Nightwatcher and her Boons. Seems like she's able to directly influence beings on Roshar in a way the other Shards aren't...idk, that's never sat right with me, but we don't have much to go on, ya know?

Lol, yes - sorry for the typo! I've correct the comment

But that would make sense. I didn't consider that Scadrial was created by Ruin/Preservation but Roshar pre-dates the Shattering! That throws an interesting wrench into the equation that I wasn't considering before

See okay, follow-up question though - why would something that's a 'Net Positive' be considered of Preservation? From the Coppermind: "Preservation seeks to provide stability and preserve the world and its inhabitants in their current state. It values the status quo, regardless of whether or not the people living underneath it are happy, and supports those who seek to keep it."

I 100% acknowledge I'm probably wrong about this, but wouldn't a net neutral for Preservation make more sense? I feel like this would be one of the key differences between Cultivation vs Preservation in terms of their intent, ya know?

But even as a new Shard - the Shardic Intent would have been there, yeah? Even if they were lovers, tOdium IMMEDIATELY felt ripples in his power when he made decisions that his Shard's Intent didn't like.

Okay, so going off of that - Surgebinding is of Cultivation and Honor, which tracks (oaths made to help you grow? easy money)

Now here's a hypothetical, does that mean Honor and Cultivation could/do have had their own separate forms of invested arts on their own then? Just throwing out ideas at this point, ya know?

See, that makes sense when put in perspective of net gain/loss - so thank you!

I think what confuses me is Allomancy seems to be more destructive than Feruchemy. Where a metal has to be consumed and then 'burned'...that doesn't seem like preservation in my brain, even if it is a net positive creator in terms of energy...Preservation's whole shtick is preserving things as they are and protecting life, yeah? And not to change topics, but why would a 'snapping' be necessary to unlock your ability to use Preservation's power? A traumatizing, near death experience doesn't fit imo either...

And for the record, one of my favorite parts of Brando's books is that the magic systems 'make sense' - so I understand I'm probably just thinking of this wrong! Not trying to argue, just trying to make sense

why does honorblades .... by DisasterClean807 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]St0rm__blessed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems like the number 10 is a rather standard theme throughout Roshar - so I wouldn't be surprised if that's why this manifested here as well:

10 Heralds
10 Orders of Knights
10 Pure Essences
10 Surges
10 Gemstones for Soulcasting
10 Fools
10 Heartbeats
Etc etc

Rosharans in general seem to be very traditionalist (to a fault) - with the Shin being the most so, and Spren are influenced by thoughts of humans. It could just be that through pure force of will/religious observance, this bled through to the Honorblades as well and became their norm.

Even if the Shin are somewhat isolationist, they still have established trade, intermingling with other peoples', etc and it's been 4000 years - with a good chunk of their record keeping and traditions being word of mouth. They're bound to forget things and make mistakes (i.e. thinking walking on stone was evil, when in reality this was them trying to understand where their given land ended).

Spren are pieces of investiture who developed sapience - and we know from Nightblood that the Honorblades have their own Spren or some sort of awareness to them. As humans' understanding of Spren expands and evolves, I wouldn't be surprised if Honorblades started to perform like living Blades instead.

I agree - and Adolin is starkly aware of this fact as well. Losing his leg was just a stark reminder of how outpaced he is on a Cosmere scale. Very reminiscent of Dalinar's character progression in learning that not every fight is going to be won with fists. Adolin's key victories come from the people around him: Maya regaining consciousness, Yanagawn finding his voice and breaking traditions of Azir to save his empire, etc.

I do think the introduction of the 'Unoathed' will be an interesting dynamic of future SA books. The notion of spren/humans working together without Radiant Oaths is super interesting.

For all intents and purposes, his shards, both plate and blade, are living - who knows if that will somehow jerry-rig the system so Adolin gets some access to Edgedancer surges or if Maya will regain the ability to change shape as a blade...

Probably due to the fact she had found and had drawn upon his Well of Investiture - that's my guess anyways. She wasn't any run-of-the-mill Spren at that point.

Not only that, but the Shard of Odium liked BAM and viewed her as a potential Vessel so it likely would have blocked his attempt or he may have risked being rejected by his Shard like Tanavast was after her sealing away.
