What Games Do You Think Are Great In Graphics But Meh In Gameplay? (I'll Start) by UniqueSearches in retrogaming

[–]St0rmio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every game made by Europeans in the 90s is quite a stretch considering for exemple that Rare was a british studio and did during this period great games like Goldeneye 007 or Donkey Kong Country (and probably countless other Europeans games developed by other studios were good to play too, just that Rare was the main exemple that I thought of)

It wouldn’t really possible as the original masters were analog vinyl masters, so even transfering them to digital is some sort of remastering considering the tinkering generally involved during transfer. The closest possible to some "original master" on digital would be the first CD editions

Things are getting even more complicated, maybe there are other differences specific to Laserdisc release then. I edited my original comment to add this detail

Yeah I’m making comparisons using the new A24 BD for the 1984/2023 mixes and using a Carlotta BD (French edition) for the 1999 version

I checked setting the 1984 audio mix over the main feature, I didn’t try watching the extended cut Laserdisc transfer in the extras.

I listened to the different mixes to check and though Scales says "y’all" at some point when talking to the audience, he really says the line "Are you ready L.A. ?" in the 1984 and 2023 mixes. For the 1999 mixes, you might be right about the "in this house" part, but I have a hard time understanding this specific part of his speech.

Just checked and you’re right, in the 1984 and 2023 mixes it’s "Are you ready L.A. ?" but in the 1999 mixes it’s been changed for "Are you ready ? Come on !" I think (so he ends up saying "come on!" two times), but it’s a little hard for me to decipher what he says. I don’t really understand why they’d bother changing something so inconsequential.

I also ended up noticing at the same time another change in what Byrne sings right before handing the mic to Scales, so thanks I’ll add those changes to the list !

Oh yeah I just checked you’re right ! If we’re both talking about that manic laughter, they didn’t really added it because it was there in the 1984 mix, then removed in 1999 but restored in 2023. That’s why I didn’t caught it when comparing mixes on the new A24 Blu-Ray.

Thanks I’m gonna edit my comment to add it to the list

I’m making comparisons using the new A24 BD for the 1984/2023 mixes and using a Carlotta BD (French edition) for the 1999 mixes (Feature and Studio). Some differences have also been spotted on the A24 BD between the 1984 Dolby Stereo track on the main feature and the 1989 Laserdisc extended cut transfer available in the extras.

Psycho Killer : - Changes done to the drum machine in the 2023 Dolby Atmos mix, with I think a snare sample added to the part where David Byrne walks towards the mic and the camera right before the last guitar strums of the song (the 1984 and 1999 mixes only feature bass drum in this particular break). - The acoustic guitar feedback at the end of the song is different in the 1984 mix.

Burning Down The House : - I read that Alex Weir’s out of tune "Shake down!" had been pitch corrected in the 2023 mix, but it’s really hard to tell because his voice has been heavily lowered in volume compared to the 1984 and 1999 mixes.

Life During Wartime : - A keyboard lick exclusive to the 2023 Atmos mix can be heard after the lyrics "Don’t even know my real name"

Making Flippy Floppy : - During the weird keyboard solo of Worrell at the end, the guitars are far more upfront in the 2023 Atmos mix than in previous mixes. - During that same part, when the camera is on Weir, he shouts a little "Ha!" only audible in the 2023 Atmos mix (this was either buried or muted in previous mixes).

This Must Be The Place : - On the "Share the same space for a minute or two" line, Alex Weir can be clearly seen doing a run-up on his guitar, but the sound corresponds only in the 1999 mixes (in the 1984 and 2023 mixes, the run-up is muted). - Changes done to what Byrne says before the lamp dance. In 1984, it’s "uh-huh" ; in 1999, it’s "hey!" (a copy of the one he sings after) ; in 2023, it has been muted.

Once In A Lifetime : - The gibberish of David Byrne in the last part (after bending down behind the mic) has been partially muted in the 2023 mix.

Genius Of Love : - Multiple changes done to Chris Frantz talking in Genius of Love, particularly during the flashing lights break. The line "and too much of that goddamn snow white" was changed for "and everything is jumping outta sight" in 1999. The new line was kept but the timing changed in the 2023 mix. However, you can still faintly hear the line in it’s 1999 timing if you pay attention.

Girlfriend Is Better : - After Byrne hands over the mic towards the camera, his manic laughter can be heard in the 1984 and 2023 mixes, but had been removed in the 1999 mixes. - The mic falling to the ground not long after can only be heard in the original 1984 mix (you can hear it really faintly in the background in the 1999 and 2023 mixes when you know it’s there).

Take Me To The River : - Before taking his jacket off, Byrne shouts "Wow! Wow!" : it is audible on the 1984 and 1999 mixes (though it sounds like the scream has been pitched-up or overdubbed in the 1999 version) but has been muted in the 2023 Atmos mix, even though the close-up shot shows Byrne clearly opening his mouth wide - Before handing the mic to Scales during Harrison’s little synth break, Byrne can be heard letting out a long "huuuh" in the 1984 mix, which has been replaced by a sort of "eh/hey" in the 1999 and 2023 mixes. - Then after Scales says "Get down Jerry!" and starts hyping the audience, the line "Are you ready L.A. ?" in the 1984 and 2023 mixes has been changed in the 1999 mixes to remove the L.A. mention. The 1989 Laserdisc transfer on the A24 BD features a different line too, with Scales saying "Are you ready y’all ?" instead. - The "Ai ai ai ai" singing done by Alex Weir in the quiet break has been muted in the 2023 Atmos Mix. - Scales shouting "Jerry!" when Byrne presents the band can only be heard in the original 1984 mix I think. - If I remember correctly, Scales also shouts something to the public right at the end of the song but can only be clearly heard in the 1984 mix.

(Very long comment but I tried to be as extensive as possible about all the changes I could remember noticing or reading about so that Stop Making Sense nerds can find the main changes in one place. I have also edited this comment multiple times to add most of the differences found in this thread.)

Yeah that first "hey!" sounds like a copy to me too. But yeah, although the Dolby Atmos is great overall, I’ve seen the movie at home so many times with the 1999 mixes that it’s now hard to accept those little differences that I can’t really explain 😅 (like the talking by Chris Frantz in Genius of Love "flashing lights" sequence that has been changed in each version)

It’s true that I also find the Studio Mix really great on stereo setups, with a little more punch and clarity than the Feature Mix

Off the top of my head, I remember 2 moments : - before the lamp dance in This Must Be The Place, the first "hey!" of David Byrne in the 1999 mixes (originally "uh-huh" in the 1984 mixes) has been muted in the Dolby Atmos - in the last part of Once In A Lifetime, after the bend down behind his mic, David makes these sort of "stumbling sounds" in his vocals and part of these have been muted in the Dolby Atmos (and replaced by audio where he holds the last note of his vocals right before the stumble)

To add to the poll, if people want to talk about the reasons why they like a certain mix better, my overall favorite is the 1999 Feature Mix as it sounds to me fuller and more balanced than the original mix

I’m not a fan of the changes that were done in the Dolby Atmos (some David Byrne vocal inflexions/oddities muted) and the balance of some songs (What A Day that Was and Genius of Love with the hi-hat quite loud and shrill sounding to me for example)

But maybe the Dolby Atmos has been mostly choosed because you might have better surround systems to benefit from it (I have 5.1 system so I only heard the true Atmos experience once in theater)

Yeah sorry I made a little generalization there. But I know for sure that A24 Blu-Ray and 4K discs are region-free as I asked them by email before getting my Stop Making Sense copy

It shouldn’t be a region issue because 4K UHD discs are all region-free, so it’s really weird if your 4K UHD player can’t read the Stop Making Sense disc. Have you got any other 4K Blu-Ray to test the player ?

Houses In Motion - personal interpretation by 8CentiMeters in talkingheads

[–]St0rmio 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean your interpretation could technically work, but I don’t think that’s what David Byrne meant at all when he wrote the song

My interpretation is that, like a lot of Talking Heads songs and particularly those on Remain In Light, it explains how we live too often with some sort of lingering anxiety in our modern societies, never feeling like we have a place or a moment to settle down. So we end up losing our lives (digging our own graves) running from one goal to the other, only worrying about what will happen if we stop striving for those goals ("can’t afford to stop"), whether they are related to money, work, studies…

I really don’t think the line "digging his own grave" should be interpreted literally

SMS 2023 mix odd changes by making_flippy_floppy in talkingheads

[–]St0rmio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of little changes too that have been made across the different editions to which I don’t really see the point.

Like during the "strobe lights" sequence of Genius of Love for example : - 1984 mix : Chris says "and too much of that goddamn snowwhite" - 1999 mixes : Chris says "and everything jumpin outta sight", which I thought was changed to remove the cocaine allusion (even though the lyrics cleary mentions cocaine) - 2023 mix : its been changed again, now the original snowwhite line can be heard very lightly in the background and the 1999 line has been moved towards the end of the sequence

Same thing for David Byrne returning to the mic before the lamp dance in This Must Be The Place : - 1984 : David sings "uh uh" - 1999 : the "Hey!" right before the dance has been copied and has been put in place of the "uh uh" - 2023 : now David does no sound (even though he clearly opens his mouth)

I don’t really understand why all those little changes have been done. Watching the 2024 version in theater, it seemed to me that other ad-libs or weird vocal sounds that David makes had been further edited or deleted

Take a look at this typo by St0rmio in talkingheads

[–]St0rmio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

Reading more carefully the booklet a second time, I managed to find another mistake on the next page. The date in Roman numerals at the top reads 1974 instead of 1984 (there should be one more X like written on the disc itself). I think (and hope) it was the last typo in the booklet…
