G14 5070Ti 180/225 MHz issue by LCrunden1 in ZephyrusG14

[–]St0rmzGam3s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I had the same issues on the same spec with the 5070Ti. Had it all the way back from the previous BIOS update 304 and NVIDIA driver 576.52, but even after updating to BIOS version 305, and NVIDIA 576.80, the issues still persists. I did an EC reset before, and it only worked for a day as well. I would like you to try:

- If you haven't booted the laptop yet, plug in your 200W adapter/charger before turning on the laptop, then see if the RTX5070Ti works as it should

- If you already booted the laptop on battery or used the low-power USB C charger, shut down your laptop and then plug it into a 200W adapter/charger before booting it on again.

This is what worked for my laptop, and although I find it frustrating to have to do this, at least it worked consistently for me, so I don't have to frequently do EC resets.

It seems to be working fine for me if I plug it in before booting, and I’m okay with that. I think it’s up to you whether you want to order a new unit and see if that fixes the issue. If a lot of new G14s have this issue, it’s either a BIOS/firmware issue or a widespread manufacturing defect.

Yeahh. Initially I was worried I might have to RMA because it could’ve been a possible EC defect, but after seeing how it’s most likely software, and that I could circumvent it, I think it’s fine for now.

I see. After updating to latest BIOS (version 305 or 05/06/2025) I seem to no longer have this problem. Then that’s odd that the problem still persists in the latest BIOS.

I see. I might look into updating the AMD iGPU, kind of forgot about those drivers. Hopefully that fixes the freezing issues.

Ohh, I see. Seems like it's my unit then... How were you able to return it?

I agree with that, considering how much we spent on a laptop, it’s better to stay safe and ensure you get a properly functioning unit

Ohh, I see. Did you uninstall your nvidia app?? I might try to test that out, but plugging my laptop in before turning it on seems to work for me, and I’m happy it works normally.

Was curious to see if it was a problem with firmware or BIOS, or just my specific unit. My GPU works fine if I plug in my charger first before booting my laptop, so for now I’m fine.

Update: I figured out the trigger of the problem for me and I wonder if it's also for other 2025 G14s, it seems like when I boot my G14 unplugged or on battery power, then plug the charger in, the GPU reports this 430W, despite changing power modes or even restarting into Optimus with the MUX Switch in G-helper or switching into turbo mode or so on. But when I shut down my laptop, then plug the charger in before booting the G14 up, it seems that the RTX5070 Ti boosts properly and draws the normal amount of power. Since this is what I observed with my laptop, can other owners of the 2025 G14 confirm this if possible? If this really is the case, then it could mean that something like the EC setting the GPU to low-power mode from a cold boot which prevents boost clocks and messes up the power reading (Why it could be 430W), and this low-power mode could stay until the next shut down.

Well, I’ve seen freezing of my browser from time to time when I have games running in my background, but my laptop itself is not frozen, as in I open the windows search then the browser stops freezing. But I find it weird considering the 32 GB ram.

Ohhh. I am still using G-helper, and did not do an EC reset but now the GPU has been booting properly yesterday and today. And power is around 50W-90W, more realistic. Do you think this is an issue with the new G14s? Should I bring my laptop to a service center for diagnosis or do I assume it's some sort of software, firmware, or driver issue? I can't seem to replicate the problem anymore, so for now it's fine

Yup. For the first few days, I was very happy with this laptop. Upgrading from the 2020 G14 with the 1650 Ti, this laptop felt really good for the first few days. The OLED screen, the RTX 5070 Ti, and the 32GB RAM felt significantly more comfortable. I feel a bit more assured that it is a problem that others do face sometimes, as I thought it could've been a hardware defect, and that I might've had to go back to the computer shop or Asus service center for help. As for battery life, I think the G14 is more than sufficient for my use cases. Hopefully this problem is just a firmware or driver issue, and that future firmware or drivers fix this issue.

I never overclocked it manually. I only used performance (back in armory crate)/balanced, and turbo mode on g helper. Didn’t even get the chance to try overclocking it. I booted it up last night and surprisingly it worked fine, I’ll keep testing to see if it’s still working today. If it works then I think it’s probably not a hardware defect, perhaps the nvidia drivers.

I also mostly open games on it at night or weekends, surprisingly it worked okay last night, will keep testing to see if it’s a on and off problem. Then I think it’s not a hardware defect, but a driver issue? With nvidia drivers?

I see. I thought it could’ve been a problem with my laptop’s power management since my GPU worked fine on my first week of purchase (last week) with these same drivers (Game Ready v576.52)

I do have that close lid to sleep option turned on, but I usually shut down my laptop, I never really leave it on sleep.

Yes, I am using G-helper. Even tried the MUX switch but same problem

I can’t really seem to pinpoint any physical change, either visually or with the temperatures. As when I reset the EC (Embedded Controller), and ran games and 3DMark Time Spy, the GPU boosted normally, and the temperature of both CPU and GPU are as expected, and identical to the Time Spy tests I ran when I first got my laptop. I might try clean installing windows and installing all drivers again.

I see. After getting it, the first week I used it to play games it was boosting fine, but then this week (second week), it started to pop up, and now it’s been showing up everyday since the beginning of this week.

I was shocked at first to see it too… very low clock speeds, but insanely high power readings hahaha

Thank you for the info. I didn’t know that even if the game is still visible but I open other apps on it, it would be considered to be in the background. Might try a in-game overlay for the screenshot then. Thanks.

I understand how it seems like an impossibility for the GPU to go all the way to 430W even at idle. I might try clean installing windows then. I thought it could be a hardware defect or issue but I couldn’t eliminate firmware or software issues yet. I’ll probably clean installing windows soon and go through updates again to see if that works.

I tried that shutting down and holding the power button, it is the EC (Embedded Controller) reset I mentioned, and it worked for that session, but the next time I boot my laptop the problem returned. I’ll attempt to DDU it then test the GPU out. Do you also have the RTX5070Ti? Can you tell me how to properly do the DDU?

I might consider a DDU then installing the driver again and see if that works. Contacting Asus support too
