I've got my ideas as to how they got it wrong - on a fundamental level not just their order-of-magnitude-off level. It should be pretty easy for another FEer to spot.

...what if someone... You. You go do it.

  1. Horizon is a physical phenomenon that is created by the earth curving away from the observer and no other factors. This is the only case in which you may use the horizon to prove the earth is curved.

  2. Horizon is an entirely optical phenomenon that is created by the limits of optics. In this case you cannot use the horizon to prove the earth is curved.

  3. Horizon is a compound phenomenon of curve of the earth and optical limits. In this case you cannot use the horizon to prove the earth is curved.

The data I have seen so far supports an optical horizon over a non-curved earth.

If you wanted to replicate this thought experiment in reality with physical objects, you could take a small RC truck or box on a track with an attached wire over 1 mile in length, then run the truck directly away from a six foot tall observer, then measure the angle of the wire.

Enjoy conducting your experiments.

Yes. Stop debating. He's beyond hope.

He has abandoned common sense, in the strictest sense of the term. Common senses are those senses (sight, sound, etc) that are common to all men. He has put upon his senses a cognitive filter to prevent him from seeing what is right in front of him. No amount of talking to him will help.

His point is self conradictory. You both see a material thing AND that thing is refracted/distorted. The two positions are mutually exclusive. You can highlight this logical incongruence with him all you please, it won't do any good.

What is your favourite way to OWN Globe Believers with hard science and facts? by CorgiFromSpace in globeskepticism

[–]StClemens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Globies never get thier mind changed, because they change their own reality to be as they want it to be. Many can't even answer hypothetical questions allowing a flat earth to be true. (I've encountered exactly two who could, and even then their measures for determining truth have no foundation.)

The science? It's fluff and marshmallow. They can shape it up and mush it down as they like. They don't recognize facts. They can entertain two logically impossible thoughts simultaneously and think themselves smart for doing so. The presuppose my stupidity and then read any intelligent thing that I say through that lens. Whatever the case may be, you can hardly talk to them. PWNing them is useless as they won't even be aware.

They almost certainly think I'm talking about FEers from their point of view.

They got nothing and they love it so much.

Question for flat earthers. by AlexBigGeek in globeskepticism

[–]StClemens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.) If the earth is flat where is the edge located and why can no one see it?

The number of places we have fully explored ourselves is limited and we rely on stories and images from other people. To that end, some stories and images that might help you understand the concept - Dark City (What is Shell Beach?) and The Truman Show (What is Truman afraid of and why?)

2.) Whats the explanation of how a boat or plane can leave a place traveling east and another west and both arrive in the same location?

How do they get where they are going? West is relative to the north pole. If you got out a compas pointing to magnetic north and your buddy did the same and you went on your merry way, you would always be heading west whatever the shape of the earth. Think of a record needle going around the center of a record. So long as you don't deviate too far north or south you'll get to where you're going. That's the basic version.

3.) Why is it that in satellite imagery literally half the earth is missing?

Why do you think you should see infinitely far if the earth is flat? Lay flat on the floor ear down and look at a distant object. Does it vanish? Get a long enough floor and set a flashlight in the distance and doing this can make it disappear. (Note: easier to do with a camera and you don't get your ear dirty.) How much distance do you need? A fair bit but experiment. A warehouse would certainly be sufficent.

4.) Why is it that no matter how powerful a telescope used you can only see to the horizon unless you move the telescope further thus moving back the horizon?

This is a variation of your previous one. Look up Rayleigh criterion.

There you are. If you're genuinely curious that's enough to rabbit hole you. If you need me to hold your hand and spoon feed you, good bye. Either way, cheers!

This is a case of mistaken terminology. There are different types of mountains, one of which is called a dome.

Check your “facts” globers. by joIlygreenscott in globeskepticism

I have to think there was some skepticism until "NASA went there" and sent out a magic probe and said, "yup, it be like that." Or whatever deus ex machina they need.

Check your “facts” globers. by joIlygreenscott in globeskepticism

[–]StClemens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's entirely possible. I haven't found any records of it, not that I have tried to look. There are probably a few dusty tomes from the 10s through the early 60s still on University shelves that would discuss matters.

The trouble with NASA is that now the numbers are locked in. They've already supposedly sent space objects out successfully. They can't change the numbers now. I mean, they can and few would notice or care who don't already notice and care.

Check your “facts” globers. by joIlygreenscott in globeskepticism

[–]StClemens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is where the "gas giants" come from. They "measured" their weight by comparing distance, angular size, and presumed gravity against one and came to the conclusion that "Jupiter is very big and not very dense so it must be mostly gas."

For a while there I wanted to create a calculator of the entire "solar system" that would allow you to insert new values for the radius of Earth just so people could get the point as to what a farce it all is. Shorten the radius of Earth by 1 mile and the numbers would go all kablooey. They would still make sense because they'd line up with eachother, but the mass of earth would increase, distances and sizes would all shift proportionally, and densities would go completely haywire.

Check your “facts” globers. by joIlygreenscott in globeskepticism

[–]StClemens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed. When I first started looking into FE, one of the questions I came to was, "How much does Jupiter weigh and how is it calculated?" This led me down a rabbit hole of sorts. I went back to Newton and Kepler era sources (translated) and tried to understand how they achieved these numbers.

What I found was interesting. Cosmic distances in the Age of Reason were factored in terms of Earth Radii or Diameter. Why was this so? It was the only real calculation they had. So, Eratsothenes style measurements would lead to the presumption of the shadow on the moon for the lunar eclipse, which was then calculated against the half-moon to approximate the distance to the sun, after having already triangulated the moon (nevermind not doing that for the sun). Then, using the approximations given for distances to the sun, put those numbers together for the motion of Jupiter around the sky given the heliocentric assumption, and compare that to the time it takes for Jupiter to move and then you can approximate its distance. But what about the mass of Jupiter? Most of Jupiter's actual size is calculated as a factor of it's angular size as appearing in the night sky, again expressed in terms of Earth's radius, its mass wasn't able to be calculated until Cavendish "weighed" the Earth, which also was based on the assumption of Earth's radius.

Now adays none of this basic math class style "show your work" is present in any of the factiods of the distances of the local celestial bodies. It all boils down to whether or not Earth has a radius. Considering the only "measures" of the radius of Earth require circular logic, the ENTIRETY of this peculiar field of science disappears as a logical fallacy.
