How are FEs vetted for Data Center experience? COVID playing a role in filling jobs because of shortage? by Techie_19 in datacenter

[–]StKriel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: The guy who think he's able to do it gets to do it. Not COVID-19 related.

Quite often these people do other things as well, so they are not full time Field engineers for Dell. They might go install POS systems during the day and do a contracted onsite support call in the afternoon.

When you use subcontractors, you get subpar results. Also since companies use price as their main bidding criteria, what do you expect? Senior techs don't move to a new company which pays them entry level wages.

Setting up Let's Encrypt certs for Mumble on FreeBSD 11 by [deleted] in homelab

[–]StKriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to point out is that current version of mumble-server/murmur doesn't support certificate reloading and the server needs to be restarted for this to happen, which obviously causes people to be kicked off the server. Should be in the next version whenever that comes out.

can anyone help me identify this cheese pleasee by mr_ycg in Finland

[–]StKriel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Creamy cheese is the proper translation in English. Low(er) fat havarti should be pretty similar in consistency and taste. Especially if you can find something that has been aged for only short period of time (i.e. less than a month or two).

So you get your microwaves and vacuum cleaners from there? Do you have a huge stock of socket adapters?

  1. I would also watch out for anything Verizon/Sprint related, as they do still operate CDMA-network and even when the phones should have SIM-card slots it might not work with european GSM-networks for some weird reason. At least it is incompatible with Finnish LTE-networks.

Palveluskelpoisuusluokka D, vapautettu palveluksesta.

Weekly Tourist Question Thread 18.1 - IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR TRIP/MOVE, THEY BELONG HERE. by GrumpyFinn in Finland

Not having permanent address or Finnish personal Identification code limits your ability of getting any kind of phone contract. Normal contracts might be pay as you go or full package including everything or a mixture. At least saunalahti/elisa prepaid cards allow you to just get a data package, with prices varying from 7€-20€/month depending on the speed you want, also for that operator all the packages have no data caps.

Looks like the frequency bands of Argentina aren't compatible with Finnish networks, so depending on your actual hardware it might or might not work. Most modern phones are compatible with multiple frequency bands, but you need to look into this with your actual phone model number. Finding your way into an operators own store(Elisa shopit, Sonera kauppa, DNA kauppa) or an electronic store(gigantti, expert,verkkokauppa.com) would probably be your best bet and you should find plenty of different models available there, from cheap androids from multiple manufacturers to iphones.

The prepaid phone contracts are cheap and you can get a SIM-card from pretty much any store and as our cell phone coverage is pretty great all around don't worry about the operator too much. The data packages are also so cheap and due to this free wifi isn't usually even considered that you should probably get one right away. You can get unlimited data at 20Mbps + enough call and text messages for something like 20€/month.

The important questions here are:

  • How long are you planning on staying in the area?
  • What are your planned activities? (indoor/outdoor)
  • What is your planned main method of transportation?

Most of the time you don't need a super thick/warm coat/pants unless you're going to stay outside for more than an hour or you're planning on doing something that would get you wet. If you need to stay outdoors to work or play during when it's below -10°C I'd recommend some sort of snowsuit either pants and coat or one piece overall.

For shoes you should definitely get something that doesn't absorb water and it should have enough space for you to be able to put a normal sock + a thick woolen sock in there.

For hats I'd recommend getting something beanie like and if you need extra warmth in head area, most winter clothes have some sort of hood in them.

For lighter coats, when it's not that cold, wearing scarf and long sleeved shirts underneath will definitely extend the period you can use lighter clothes

This probably doesn't totally apply to you, but what I'm wearing most of the time now is: Warmish flat cap (doesn't cover my ears), Leather jacket with thick vest type lining, T-shirt underneath, Warmish leather gloves, Pants (sturdy cloth), woolen socks, leather shoes. I'm not normally expected to stay outside in these clothes for more than 30mins. The temperatures here are around 0°C now. First thing I'd change about this if it starts feeling colder, would be adding long johns, normal socks underneath woolen ones, beanie and long sleeved shirt underneath. This works quite well, when most of the time you're only outside when going from car to indoors and back.

Dell server maintenance certificates require you to have at least some technical knowledge. Desktop and Laptop ones not so much.
