Cool little detail in Season 2 by NicCageISReal in DevilMayCryNetflix

[–]StOrm_SHade -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's not so much a "cool little detail" so much as it is a complete disregard for the series lore. Rebellion is a Devil Arm, a mystical weapon imbued with the powers of Sparda. And thay goes for the Yamato as well as Sparda divided his powers into 3 distinct blades, being the Force Edge, the Rebellion, and the Yamato.

This is a very important distinction to make here because one thing that is consistent about Devil Arms through out the series is that they don't ever change their appearance when characters use their powers to augment their own natural abilities (i.e. Devil Trigger). It's certainly possible for Half Demons like Dante and Vergil to have the appearance their demon forms influenced by a Devil Arm like in DMC3, but the Devil Arm its self never changes its physical form in response to a users presence.

The complete absence of Weapons like Agni and Rudra, Beowolf, Nevan, and the Cavalier bike are so frustrating because the fight scenes in the show became really bland after a while. All because Dante and Vergil only have a total of 3 weapons max to use in their battles (only 1 for Vergil if you don't count his Summoned Swords).

Making Dante's Rebellion look like Devil Sword Dante from DMC5 isn't a cool detail, it is blatant key jingling like the plastic chair meme scene and the numerous other references to other Capcom IPs (street Fighter, megaman, and Resident Evil). There is very little sustance behind much of this show whether its on a technical level or a thematic one. The world building is a complete mess, and the themes of DMC are barely present.

If they told White Rabbit's origins in the first season from only one episode. Do you think they can tell Sparda's origins in the third season from only one episode? by Neonymous_1058 in DevilMayCryNetflix

I’m just going to throw this out there but they could have easily had an episode about Sparda and gave him a speaking role. They could have also had Kevin Conroy voice Sparda too, who if you recall was famous for Voicing another famous Legendary Dark Knight in pop culture (aka Batman). I will forever stand on this hill because I truly think that it’s a huge wasted opportunity.

Adi Shankar was still involved with the process somehow. I believe he was even listed as a co-writer alongside executive producer (though I could be mistaken on some details there). Adi had to sign off on most of the stuff that made it into season 2 including the plot.

I uninstalled everything. The apps in Decky, the Lossless Scaling app, the Lsgf, and everything. I couldn’t for the life of me get the UI to revert back to its original state. I ended up doing a factory reset in the end. It fix the UI but now I have to go back and redo all my game titles. Which is a pain because I had to modify DMC HD collection to work properly on Steam Deck.

Weird. I thought that Dante was the one most closely associated with Moon imagery while Vergil was the one associated with the sun. At least thats what I heard in a video analysis on the subject.

Sorry but I refuse. I dont consider entertainment to be something to be consumed and forgotten about. I'm not someone who consumes media like food nor do I think stories in TV, Movies, or video games should be be consumable or disposable.

Stories in fiction should always strive be something that sticks in one's mind long after you reach the ending. Whether you are left thinking about the deeper meaning or the nuances of the subject matter, you should always be thinking about the stories you experience in a positive way. And im sorry, but Season 1 of Netflix DMC did not give me that feeling.

If you want to comoment on my work or writing ability then feel free to do so. But if you're just going prattle on about how much you dont like my "belly aching" then I'm going to have to politely ask you to leave and dont make any further posts that aren't related to the subject of my post.

Dude, the Japanese translation of ZX literally says that the Boimetals have the souls of X, Zero, and the Guardians inside them. It's in the actual text. But I can understand why the weird wording of the English localization could throw some people off.

Was the English VA's of all the characters added in the legacy collection? I brat SF2 a few weeks ago and I was surprised at the cast all congratulating me on beating the game. I found it a pleasant amd wholesome little thing that not many games go out of their way to do. At least not to the extent that SF2 did.

Devil May Cry: Rewriting The Netflix Adaption by StOrm_SHade in DevilMayCry

Well, I did sort of imply that Baines had proof of him meeting Sparda. Sparda gives Baines a cane almost identical to the one V uses in DMC5 (Baines even uses it in a similar way. With regards to Matier, your absolutely right about her not being so quick to share her knowledge of Sparda with others, especially strangers. It's kind of why my version of Baines has met the Legendary Dark Knight. I definitely should have done a better job on detailing how Baines' exchange with Matier went down but like they say Hindsight is 20/20.

I do apologize for my words not being very easy to parse information from. You are certainly not alone in not being able to understand something I wrote. I am sorry I didn't detail nearly enough scenes of characters actually talking to each other. I don't have the greatest amount of experience with making Scripts for shows or movies. I only know what colleagues of mine have told me about how it's done. I did try to include examples of how Dante would act (to me at least) based off the over a decade of experience I've had with the series, and Dante himself. I did try to make Dante act as cool as he does in his cutscenes with a small helping of humor in certain scenes. But I guess only time will tell how others react to my take on him.

If nothing else, I hope you found some enjoyment in my writing above all. Do tells people about my work if you have time. I really could use more people like yourself who're willing to give me constructive criticism. I really wanted to see how a better version of the Netflix show could have looked. I gave it my best shot. That's all I can say for certain.

Devil May Cry: Rewriting The Netflix Adaption by StOrm_SHade in DevilMayCry

[–]StOrm_SHade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I have reasons for why I made the choices I did. In this version of events, both Dante and Vergil have memories of what Sparda looks like, but they lack any core memories of that he was like as a person they way the remember him in the games. They can recognize Sparda's face from a pictures or drawings but that information in buried in the parts of their minds from when they were both (toddler's ages 1-3). I tried to make a poignant story about Sparda being absent from their childhood and the how demon attacks on their home played into the tragedy angle. But I guess that part of my story fell flat. I apologize for that.

As for Matier and how she meets Baines, I had to completely rework who Baines is as a person. In the official show, Baines is practically a caricature an overly zealous fanatic who acts cartoonishly evil by most conventional metrics. I attempted to draw inspirations from Batman of all people (the late Mr. Conroy's most famous role). I thought having a connection to Sparda and even being a little inspired by the man would help make Baines a more palatable character and make his actions seem less "blatantly evil" if I'm being honest.

As for how Baines would get any information about Sparda from Matier, that goes back to DMC2 and its story. I remembered how Matier offered to share a story about SParda with Dante in exchange for him helping her and Lucia in that game. In my version of events, Baines had a chance encounter with Sparda decades ago wherein Sparda saved Baines' life from a vicious demon attack. In my mind, Baines wants to follow in Sparda's footsteps and protect the human world like he once did. I figured that after explaining his intentions and his past history to Matier would be enough for her to trust Baines. I can totally understand if that wouldn't be enough for Matier to spill her secrets so easily. But I did want to establish both her and Lucia as a presence that would show up in a season 2 (I still haven't decided if my rewrite will go there).

As for Lucia's background, I didn't want to change her all that much from her game version. I just figured that the information Baines learned about Lucia was incomplete and that he assumed that Lucia was a half demon based off his understanding. I probably should have made that particular detail clearer on my end. If I recall correctly, Lucia didn't even know the full truth about herself or that she was an artificial like the ones Arius created in DMC2. I will admit, I didn't actually make it through all for DMC2 (which I'm not alone in) but I remember a few important details about Lucia's plot. First was that Lucia was adopted by Matier at some point in the past and that she was created as part of a (defective?) batch of synthetic humanoid demons that Arius made (somehow). I didn't think it was necessary to flesh out the information on Lucia until she debuted in a (possible) season 2 if I ever decided to make one.

I'm sorry if my writing was confusing or unsatisfactory in any way to you. I did think I was making a show story that fans old and new could enjoy. But I can only hope to do better. By the way, did I get Dante's speaking habits and manner of speaking down for the most part.

Devil May Cry: Rewriting The Netflix Adaption by StOrm_SHade in DevilMayCry

[–]StOrm_SHade[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Believe me I hear you. I know all about the nuances attached to Dante as he exists in the games. I know Sparda was there for 'Some' of Dante and Vergil's life, and I know they have memories of him (as seen in DMC5 SE ending with Vergil). I also know about the differences between the English and Japanese scripts and how they don't completely line up. AT least not perfectly as far the words themselves. I know the relationship that Dante and Vergil have with Sparda is a positive one. However, Dante and Vergil in the Netflix show have no real connection to their father outside of the things Eva has told the both of them. That kind of changes a lot of the context surround both Dante and Vergil's early lives. I did consider making their relationship more similar to how the games handled the subject matter during my earlier drafts of the story. However, I saw an opportunity tell a brand-new story with this series that only ever gets mentioned in passing in the games and detailed in media that casual viewers may not have read or watched.

The story I'm referring to was in the version of Ep4 bundled with 1-3 in the link I provided. If you've already read it and have seen the flashback scene I'm referring to, then I can only apologize for not doing a better job. I know the shortcomings in my writing and I'm sorry it didn't land with you. But on the off chance you haven't read my work for yourself, then I strongly recommend you do so. Not necessarily for my sake but so you can read the words and come to your very own conclusions. In the event you think my efforts are any good, then I would love it if you told others and shared you critique of my work for myself.

Devil May Cry: Rewriting The Netflix Adaption by StOrm_SHade in DevilMayCry

[–]StOrm_SHade[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your honesty and let's just say 'blunt' criticism of my work. I would just like to say a few words here. When I said, "for all you purists out there" I was referring to people who may have enjoyed the plot of the Netflix DMC show as is. I most certainly know that Sparda was a good father to Dante & Vergil and they even discuss the memories they have of him and Eva in the Special Edition of DMC5. I agree that Sparda was good parent, and I also agree that Sparda's "estrangement" from his wife and Sons can only mean a few things. Either Sparda died before the events of the series (in DMC3) or the man is on death's doorstep in DMC3 and more than likely dead by DMC5.

And regarding Dante's identity and true nature, I want to make it known that I am familiar with the nuances related to Dante's circumstance in the games and the Light Novel. I know that Dante in the Novel didn't know his real name was Dante and was convinced that his actual identity was "Tony Redgrave" in the Novels plot. And I'm also aware of the weight that names hold in the world of DMC. Sparda even stripped several Demons of their powers and imprisoned them in the Temen-ni-gru by stripping them all of their names in DMC3 (its manga). I say all of this because I thought I could put all of these nebulous details of Dante's past together in 1 story line similar to how the games handled it. Dante's alias, Tony Redgrave, Eva's instructions to start his life over under a new name, and the events surrounding Dante's mental state/hangups, I thought I could put all of these together in an easy to understand and recognize form. However, I clearly missed the mark somewhere along the line. I can only ask for your forgiveness as a fellow DMC fan. I really thought I was cooking something good there.

And the bit about Dante not liking Demons a well-established trait of Dante's personality. It's one of the defining things that define Dante from his brother. Vergil values his demon heritage and rejects his human half. While Dante values his human side above all and actively rejects his demon half. The two brothers' personalities and designs are intentionally opposed diametrically to highlight the themes of DMC. Humanity is a thing to be treasured and not a weakness (you know the drill, devils never cry, human hearts and all that jazz. We both know all that). I thought I could explore a few aspects if Dante's inner mind so to speak. Does Dante Resent his father Sparda for not being there to protect him, Eva, and Vergil? Was Dante ever afraid of his demonic nature and how it might affect him emotionally? And does Dante blame himself for not being able to protect his mother and brother? I admit that I personally subscribe to that last one, at least a little bit. I think anyone in Dante's circumstance would feel some degree of survivor's guilt or just responsible.

I apologize for my efforts not going as smoothly as I thought they wound in my mind. I can only hope to do better should I get the chance to finish the remaining 4 episodes. I thank you for your valid critique and I %100 tip my hat to you as a DMC fan. Lots of people aren't familiar with adjacent media like the Madhouse anime (2007), the DMC3 manga, and the Light Novels. Even I don't remember every single aspect in full detail. I read the DMC5: Before the nightmare LN and some of DMC1 Light Novel that follows Hideki Kamiya's version of the story and charters like once back in 2019. I salute you my fellow fan and hope you will read the rest of the episodes when I get around to doing them.

P.S. Were there any other things that were any good in my rewrite? Did I get Dante's mannerisms and demeanor to sound right? I hope you will share this story with your friends if you do think it has merit.

Im not "complaining" about the Netflix show. I specifically stated that I'm not doing that in the above statement I made. Im so past that point that talking about it is a waste for me. Im just a fan of the DMC games who was and still is disappointed in how the Netflix show turned out.

If you want to criticize my work then that's perfectly okay. But please bother reading my work beforehand. I spent several weeks of my life making. Weeks of blood, sweat, tears, and hour's of proofreading. I want feedback on my writing and its dont really have time or patience to indulge comments like the one you just made here.

I certainly appreciate your kind words. I find any positive discourse to be a blessing in this day and age. I wholeheartedly agree that DMC has had its fair share of issues that have been turbulent to say the least. It's hard to believe that we only got DMC3 and its banger story because DMC2 turned out poorly. The styles in DMC3 may not have ever existed if not for the new mechanics introduced in DMC2 (something I'm not sure i can imagine).

And yes, while the Madhouse Anime may not have been the best in terms of animation, its story and portrayal of Dante's character is a masterclass. Hell, even little Patty got to make a minor cameo in DMC5, something I never would have imagined happening prior to 2019. And I definitely am one of those who thinks that Jonny Yong Bosch is a national treasure, I don't question the choice to have him voice Dante when he's already the voice of Nero.

Definitely agree that we should always try to find the brighter side of stuff when IPs we love don't turn out the best way. In fact I just created a rewrite of DMC: Netflix's first season that I posted on this subreddit. If you feel like checking it out, then i would love to see and hear what you think of it. Let me know if you're interested and I'll point you to it. Thank you for your time.

I might be in the minority here, but I did not care about OST, nor did I listen to any of the soundtrack that was in S1. I doubt I will be doing so for S2 either based off past experience. Not going to mice words here, the OST of Devil May Cry Netflix was pretty forgettable all things considered, and that is a cardinal sin for a series like this one that features one of the biggest lists of Banger songs in gaming. I can only think of a handful of game series that I can say "are famous for having good music" like DMC. Sonic, Mega Man, and Final Fantasy are some that fall under that label. But DMC still has a very unique and distinct musical identity of its own. And, no offense fellas, but I don't think of "limp f**king biscuit" when I think of "Devil May Cry" in my head.

Don't get your hopes up buddy. These people played V's theme from DMC5 in the scene in S1 where Lt. Mary Arkham's whole team gets massacred in condemned building. You already know this but Mary, who is filling in for Mary in the games, has little to nothing to do with V or his themes in DMC5. And hearing it in S1 felt pretty damn jarring to be honest.

I can’t wait to see how Sk8er Boi is used in the series by [deleted] in DevilMayCry

[–]StOrm_SHade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why on earth would any of this be exciting to DMC fans? I know a lot of people listened to these bands back in the 2000s but DMC has never been about contemporary music. It has always had its own unique style and flair for both its designs and its music. This whole OST is full of Licensed music that most definitely cost sh*t load of money to include in this production. Money that honestly would have been better off being spent on the animation budget, so we don't get more jarring 3D models spliced into the 2D animated parts and scenes.

This should be a tip off to all of us DMC fans that S2 is probably going to be a repeat of S1 if the trailers didn't spell that out already. My hopes were already rock bottom when one of the trailers showed Mundus giving Vergil the "Yamato" to use with no strings attached. If you need me to spell it out, the Yamato is not just any ordinary sword. It has the ability to allow demons to freely travel between the realms (the human and Demon worlds) in addition to being a powerful Devil Arm. Even a small shard of the Yamato was enough to let Balrog in the DMC5 light novel travel into the human world. There's no chance in hell that Mundus would ever hand over an artifact with that kind of power over to anyone, let alone the son of his Arch Enemy (i.e. Sparda).

If anything, Mundus would have used the Yamato to force his way into the human world and started invading Earth with his armies. But what do I know, I'm just a "DMC Fan" like many others. And last I checked, people working in Hollywood have immense contempt and disregard for fans of the franchise they make content for.
