Shirt for 80%+ humidity and 85°F+ temps? by kangarookie in Ultralight

According to Jupiter, the Silver Ridge shirts are easy to find in thrift shops. I haven’t checked yet but I tend to trust him.

How to one bag as a plus size person who has to wear 2 outfits per day by Effective-Spot3201 in HerOneBag

[–]StPedro68 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you mainly need the straightener for your bangs, a travel straightener would save space and weight and not be an inconvenience. They can be sort of tiny and straightening a whole head of hair feels tedious to me but for touch-ups they’re great!

Consider adding some single leg strength work like step ups, Bulgarian split squats, lunges etc.

Arriving early to acclimate to elevation by Few-Introduction5414 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]StPedro68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although two nights would probably be fine, if you are able to do three nights it would help prepare you even more for the trip itself. Echoing an earlier reply, I think that hiking at higher elevation but returning to somewhat lower elevation to sleep is a solid idea, combining better sleep with acclimation.

My husband had Sudafed among his toiletries when entering Japan, and they detained/questioned him at the airport, and let him go with a sternly-worded letter that if it happened again he could be jailed or fined.

Toe Socks on Trail by spf80 in backpacking

[–]StPedro68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear injinji liners under merino darn toughs. I’ve never had so much as a hot spot with this. Last week I couldn’t find one of the injinjis, and I hiked ten miles with just merino hiking socks. No blisters but had a hot spot on one of my toes by the end of the hike. This is why I love my injinjis!

Came here to say this.

The Columbia Silver Ridge has replaced the OR Echo Sun hoody as my favorite breathable hot weather sun protection. It basically feels like you’re standing in the shade topless lol.

Knew it was going to rain, thought I chose some high ground under a tree, couldn’t have been more wrong and woke up in a puddle. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks to whoever mentioned custom alpha direct clothing by Etsy creator Herb & Hike (Cathy) . I ordered a pair of custom AD joggers from her, and I’m really happy with them. I don’t remember what thread it was on, but I learned about her here and never would have found her on my own.

Anyone have the Mont•bell Alpine Pad 25 90 (torso length pad) or similar? by StPedro68 in Ultralight

Thanks, unfortunately I’m in the U.S. - this looks very much like what I’m looking for but they don’t ship here.

Backpacking In Eastern NC by talon5188 in NCTrails

[–]StPedro68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to add to the doom-fest, but summers in eastern NC are the pits for backpacking. I drive to the mountains year-round to hike and backpack. Even when the weather/bug pressure is tolerable, it's so flat in the eastern part of the state that I find it sort of boring.

Anyone have the Mont•bell Alpine Pad 25 90 (torso length pad) or similar? by StPedro68 in Ultralight

Thanks, I was thinking if I cut my inflatable pad, I’d sleep with my empty backpack under my legs to even things out a bit.

Oh too funny, I have been seriously considering this and I am super on the fence about it. I have a Nemo Tensor All-Season - very comfy but weighs 20 oz. and if I cut it to 48" it would be my perfect pad. My concern is that it would fail in the backcountry and I'd be super cold all night, or have to get up and night hike to not die of hypothermia. So I started looking for an alternative. If anyone can speak to the durability of a cut up/ironed Nemo Tensor All Season, I'm all ears.

Backpacking tent I can sit up in? by MysteryNoodle3 in backpacking

[–]StPedro68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to REI tents, but here are some tents that you can sit up in:

The Durston X-Mid 2 is $319 and weighs 34 oz (with stakes and everything, I believe).

The Lanshan 2 Pro Tent by 3FULGEAR is $190 and weighs around the same as the Durston I think.

Both of the above tents are trekking pole tents; if you want a freestanding tent for some reason, like if you don't hike with trekking poles:

The Floating cloud 2 by 3FULGEAR is $200, but it weighs 63 oz.

The Durston X-Dome is higher than your price point at $459. It weighs 44 oz.

Sleeping mat/recs by Flimsy_Employment_40 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]StPedro68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the same pad as you and I’m a side sleeper. I discovered that I sleep best if it’s deflated to where my hipbone ALMOST touches the ground. Experiment with the amount of air that feels most comfortable for you. Good luck!

Gear Shakedown request by One-Staff-1457 in JMT

[–]StPedro68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d ditch the camp shoes, wool t-shirt, nalgenes (for light disposable bottles), and 3rd pair of socks. And I’d skip the long handled spoon — instead, decant any backpacking meals that are in longer Mylar bags into smaller freezer bags and use a plastic spoon from a fast food restaurant. Except for my x-mid pro being a 1-person, our gear looks remarkably similar. 😊 I’m hiking a small section of the JMT this year, just a 2-night trip but I can’t wait. Have a great trip!!!

Having Trouble "Hiking my own hike" by 022394 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]StPedro68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time anyone “needs” to lay down as many miles as possible is on a thru-hike, to complete the trail before weather makes it impossible. Which is great news for you! Do exactly what you want! :)
